"I'm sorry, Yannian." Qingling leaned against him, her breath gradually weakening, her face turning as pale as paper, and her lips trembling slightly.
"It's my fault, I'm the one to blame. I thought you would never come back, which is why I proposed to Yinqiu. I even doubted you; I thought you were just angry that I didn't wait for you and wanted me to lose my power and status. I shouldn't have left you alone; it's all my fault..."
He babbled incoherently while holding Qingling tightly, digging his hands into the ground with force. The sand mixed with blood tore at his palms, turning them into a bloody mess, yet he seemed oblivious to the pain.
She was dying; she was leaving, and this time she would never return.
"Zhang Yanniann! Get up! I won't allow you to be with her, I won't! You are mine! You belong to me, Xia Yinqiu! If it weren't for me back then, you would have been executed as a traitor long ago!"
Xia Yinqiu tugged fiercely at Zhang Yanniann's clothes from behind, glaring at Lin Yuanqi and screaming hysterically, her eyes filled with madness.
Standing aside, Lin Yuanqi squinted slightly, letting out a chilling laugh.
He glanced at Xia Yinqiu, slowly drawing a handgun from his pocket with an elegant motion as if performing. "Ah, it's about time to put an end to this."
He aimed at Qingling, his finger gently tightening on the trigger. Just as he was about to pull it, the gun tilted and struck Xia Yinqiu squarely in the chest. With a loud bang, Xia Yinqiu's eyes widened in shock and disbelief.
"You've already handed over your military token to me; what gives you the right to command me now, Miss Xia?" he said, stepping forward and pointing the gun at Zhang Yanniann's forehead with a smug smile. "Goodbye, General Zhang."
"Wait..." Qingling struggled to speak. She looked at Lin Yuanqi with a hint of pleading in her eyes. "Can you tell me how my parents died? Just for the sake of our past collaboration?"
Lin Yuanqi stared at her for a moment before retracting his gun. He crouched down in front of her and said with a triumphant grin, "Did Miss Xia not just say? It was she who caused your families..."
Before she could finish her words, Qingling suddenly summoned the last bit of her strength to rise from Zhang Yanniann's embrace. With the dagger hidden in her left hand, she thrust it forcefully towards Lin Yuanqi's throat.
Blood gushed out immediately, and Lin Yuanqi leaned back, his body swaying as he aimed his gun at Qingling, firing several shots in quick succession. The sound of gunfire echoed through the air.
Zhang Yanniann caught the collapsing Qingling in his arms. He was unable to speak, tears streaming down his face and falling onto Qingling's cheeks, his eyes filled with endless sorrow and despair.
"Yannian, if it weren't for all this, would we have been happily together?" She closed her eyes, her body convulsing several times as warmth rapidly drained from her. "Promise me, live on. Having her accompany me on the road to the underworld is enough."
She struggled to shift her body slightly, her eyes barely open as she caught a final glimpse of Xia Yinqiu through a haze, a hint of relief in her gaze.
I have won, Xia Yinqiu. Do you see? I have won; Yannian is mine.
The Xia's Army drove back the Yunnan Army in less than half a month. Two weeks later, Zhang Yanniann returned to Xia Manor, his figure appearing somewhat desolate.
He removed his armor, which clattered heavily to the ground. He handed over the military insignia to Madam Tai. She seemed about to say something, but he turned and walked away without pausing.
He arrived at the garden where Qingling was laid to rest; it was eerily silent.
The blood-stained earth had formed a crust where it lay. He crouched down and lightly touched the hardened surface with his fingers; it crumbled into fine dust and scattered away like their lost love and lives.
"I've come to take you home, Qingling."
