As night fell, they returned to their residence.
He stood alone in the slightly chilly courtyard, smoking a cigarette. The cold moonlight enveloped his tall figure, casting a solitary and desolate shadow behind him.
He remained silent, the glow of the cigarette flickering in the darkness.
Su Yau sighed softly and walked over, draping her black wool coat over his shoulders with a gentle motion.
Her slender arms wrapped around his waist from behind, her body pressing slightly against him.
"Forget her, okay?"
At that moment, Su Yau's voice sounded like that of a spoiled child, tinged with a hint of pleading. Yet, the despair and sadness in her tone were heart-wrenching, her voice slightly choked.
Xiao Tsuyi's body stiffened visibly, trembling slightly before he regained his composure and gently pried her hands away from his waist, his movements somewhat awkward. "Su Yau, please don't make this difficult for me."
Difficult? What a serious word! She would rather endure hardship herself than let him feel even a hint of discomfort or unhappiness.
Su Yau's hand lingered for a moment before she awkwardly withdrew it, brushing aside a few stray strands of hair by her ear with an unnatural gesture.
With great difficulty, she spoke up, "Xiao Tsuyi, you said you would protect me for a lifetime."
Su Yau's nose wrinkled slightly, her face showing a mix of grievance and pleading as she uttered those words without context, tears glistening in her eyes.
Xiao Tsuyi suddenly recalled the words he had spoken to Su Yau when he was fifteen.
At that time, she was just ten, a frail and innocent little girl who would chase after him, asking him to teach her marksmanship. His gaze became somewhat distant as he fell into memories that seemed to stretch back a long time.
Since meeting Shen Tingyu, how long had it been since he truly noticed this girl who had grown up alongside him?
Yet, in his neglect, she had become a capable assistant to Jun Moyuan, able to stand on her own just like him. He frowned slightly, a complex expression flashing in his eyes.
Xiao Tsuyi turned around to look at Su Yau, who had put aside her usual facade and appeared weak and submissive at this moment. Suddenly, he felt a pang of guilt and unease. He gazed into her eyes and replied earnestly, "I will."
"But you still love Shen Tingyu!" Su Yau pressed on with determination, unconsciously stepping closer to him, her eyes fixed on his with an unwavering resolve.
Xiao Tsuyi closed his eyes briefly, looking utterly exhausted. Finally, he spoke in an extremely calm voice, "This has nothing to do with whom I love; it is my promise to you." His tone was steady, but there was a hint of struggle in his gaze.
A promise? Was that all there was between them—a simple promise? Su Yau couldn't believe it; her heart lay bare before him, and she refused to accept that he couldn't see it. There was a stubborn glint in her eyes as she stared at him intently.
"Then why did you agree to marry me?" she retorted fiercely, frustration and unwillingness evident in her expression as she leaned slightly forward.
"You know my adoptive father's words; I never go against them," Xiao Tsuyi suddenly turned his face away, unwilling to confront the tear-streaked Su Yau before him.
In his memory, she had always been a bold and proud woman, but now her fragile and humble demeanor made him feel unfamiliar and at a loss. His hands clenched unconsciously as his brows furrowed deeply.
In the past, he had known he was immune to the tears of Shen Tingyu; now he realized he was equally vulnerable to the tears of Su Yau.
He watched her cry, and his heart felt as if it were being torn apart by a knife, a hint of anguish reflected in his eyes.
