Zhou Cuiping was once again searching for Lingzhi mushrooms on the mountain. After several days of fruitless searching, she found that the medicinal herbs in her space had transformed into something else entirely.
Anxiety gnawed at her; Old Man Zhou's expectations were growing heavier, and now her elder brother had returned asking for money.
“Cuiping, our family doesn’t have much silver left. If we can’t pay the tuition, your brothers will have to return home,” he sighed, his voice heavy with worry.
“Elder brother, please don’t drop out of school,” Zhou Cuiping pleaded desperately. “I’ll find Lingzhi mushrooms!” She was determined not to marry one of the village's commoners; she aspired to be a lady of status.
Once more, Zhou Cuiping climbed the mountain, fearing that the medicinal herbs would change into something else again. This time, she planned to sell what she found. Holding onto the smallest and least valuable herbs, she managed to earn a few taels of silver.
However, when she took larger and better-quality herbs to sell, they transformed into something else entirely. Zhou Cuiping nearly fell into despair, suspecting that her space was malfunctioning.
Meanwhile, Su Xiawei's home was filled with laughter and joy. The Qin was pregnant, and the entire family was in high spirits.
“Good things come to those who are fated,” Su Xiawei remarked cheerfully.
Su Xiaoxiao supported the Qin, her eyes sparkling with joy. “Mother, what do you want to eat?”
“I crave the sweet and sour ribs made by your elder sister,” the Qin replied with a smile as she looked at Su Xiawei.
“Alright, I’ll make it for you at noon,” Su Xiawei promised, playfully pinching her little nephew’s cheek.
Su Xiaoxiao went to help in the kitchen while Su Xiawei took the little one for a stroll at the village entrance.
“Oh, you seem to be living quite well,” Zhou Cuiping said enviously as she watched Su Xiawei.
“Indeed,” Su Xiawei replied, deliberately provoking Zhou Cuiping. “Zhao Dalang is quite impressive; he can farm and study—there aren’t many men like him around here.”
“Elder sister, don’t joke around,” Zhou Cuiping retorted with disgust. “Zhao Dalang is just a commoner; how can he even be compared to me?”
"Don't be so high-spirited," Su Xiawei continued to stoke the flames. "Are you really thinking of marrying the Emperor?"
"I will marry into a prominent family sooner or later!"
Zhou Cuiping snorted coldly. "Su Xiaoxiao, what kind of look is that? No matter how well you dress, it won't change the fact that you're a lowly servant!"
"Su Xiawei, don't think just because you live better than I do that you're superior. A country bumpkin is still a country bumpkin, destined to die early!"
"People like you deserve to scrape for food in the dirt!"
"Even if I'm down and out, I'm still a Young Lady!"
"Shut your mouth!"
Old Man Zhou yanked Zhou Cuiping's hair. "You wretched girl, dare to curse me?"
"Dad, I'm your precious daughter!" Zhou Cuiping cried out in despair.
"You still have the face to say that!" Old Man Zhou slapped her across the face. "After eating my food and using my resources, you still talk behind my back. Just wait until I beat you to death!"
"Uncle Zhou, please calm down," Su Xiawei interjected, fanning the flames further. "She must have ulterior motives, trying to sow discord between you and the neighbors."
"Definitely!" Old Man Zhou believed her words, seething with anger. "My family spent so much money on you, providing for you, and you repay us with ingratitude!"
"I didn't!" Zhou Cuiping tried to explain, but Old Man Zhou wouldn't listen.
"I gave you your life! After eating my food and drinking my water, you still want to stir up trouble. Just wait until I beat you to death!"
Zhou Cuiping's cries echoed through the village, and Su Xiawei listened with particular delight.
"Time to go home."
After being beaten by Old Man Zhou, he recounted everything she had said today.
Dalang was furious and slapped her across the face. "You eat our food and drink our water, yet you look down on us?"
"Don't forget, you're just a lowly slave!"
"Exactly! If it weren't for our family, you'd have starved long ago."
"Did you really think you were a Young Lady?"
The other brothers were also dissatisfied and chimed in.
Zhou Cuiping was beaten black and blue, but she felt a deep sense of injustice within her. She was the protagonist, destined to endure hardships and rise like a phoenix. She would make them all realize that she was the best!
"Just wait, one day you will all kneel at my feet and repent!" Zhou Cuiping vowed silently.
"Unlucky!" Old Man Zhou cursed as he walked away with his hands behind his back.
The Seventh Son also returned to his room, leaving Zhou Cuiping lying on the ground. She felt pain all over her body, but kept reassuring herself.
"I am the protagonist; I will surely turn my fortunes around."
"The Zhou Family are all bad people; I need to distance myself from them!"
In the following days, Zhou Cuiping faced a string of misfortunes. She had to do a lot of farm work every day, and Old Man Zhou continued to scold her.
"Father, I'm going to cut pig grass now."
Zhou Cuiping set out with her basket, constantly comforting herself.
"I am the protagonist; I will definitely meet the male lead."
"When I meet the male lead, I will be able to live a good life."
Suddenly, she spotted a man covered in blood. The man had sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, looking exceptionally handsome.
Zhou Cuiping's eyes lit up: "Great, the male lead!"
She quickly took out some healing herbs from her space and rushed to treat his wounds.
"A man this handsome must be extraordinary."
"With such charisma and looks, he must be a general!"
Zhou Cuiping was clever enough not to bring him home; otherwise, the Zhou Family would scold her again. To ensure the man woke up, she took out another healing herb and fed it to him.
Gu Sheng opened his eyes and looked at Zhou Cuiping.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Zhou Cuiping."
Zhou Cuiping flashed a sweet smile. "And you?"
"Gu Sheng."
He glanced around. "Did the young lady save me?"
"Yes."
Zhou Cuiping nodded. "You were injured, and I found you on the mountain."
"Thank you."
Gu Sheng said earnestly, "I will never forget the life-saving grace of the young lady."
"It's nothing."
Zhou Cuiping shyly smiled. "Young Master Gu, please rest here while I find a cave."
She soon found a small cave and settled Gu Sheng inside.
"Young Master Gu, I'll go back for a bit and bring you food every day. Once you're better, you'll be able to leave."
Gu Sheng looked at Zhou Cuiping, his eyes clear and pure.
"Alright."
He vowed to repay this young lady for her kindness.
Zhou Cuiping brought Gu Sheng meals every day and even made him ginseng soup.
Gu Sheng's injuries healed quickly, but he suddenly noticed the scars on Zhou Cuiping's hands.
"Miss Zhou, what happened to you?"
"It's nothing, I just fell accidentally."
Zhou Cuiping forced a smile.
Gu Sheng could guess that she had endured hardships for his sake.
"Miss Zhou, thank you."
Gu Sheng felt a pang of sorrow. "Once I'm better, I will definitely repay you well."
