Isabella was inside the locked ship, sweat trickling down her furrowed brow as her trembling hands operated the control panel. The cold commands of the artificial intelligence flickered incessantly on the screen, and she strained to follow each instruction, moving cautiously. Each button she pressed felt like a silent battle against the darkness deep within her. In her mind, an evil whisper roared, mocking her futile efforts, as if tempting her to abandon this absurd struggle.
"This is pointless; what you are doing won't change anything..." The voice was filled with derision and disdain, tormenting her mind repeatedly like an unbreakable shackle tightly binding her will.
"Stop... you are digging your own grave. The greatness of the Light Activation Project cannot end like this." The voice grew more urgent, its murky and malevolent tone echoing in her mind, as if trying to completely destroy her resolve.
Isabella's face turned pale, her fists clenched tightly, nails digging into her palms, pulling her back from the whispers of madness. She took a deep breath, forcefully casting aside all distractions, and with great difficulty pressed the consent button on the panel to initiate the engine's overload sequence. The lights in the cabin flickered for a moment with her action, dimming further as if the entire ship began to awaken slowly at her choice.
"Boiler ignition sequence initiated; overload operation in progress."
Isabella's fingers moved away from the keys, her body swaying as she struggled to remain upright. She felt her strength gradually draining away, and the whispers of Black Worm grew increasingly rampant, attempting to reclaim control over her body. Yet she persisted, resisting it with reason and resilience.
"You are a fool!" The whisper screamed, filled with uncontrollable anger and fear. "You are destroying everything! Stop!"
But Isabella ignored it; she knew time was running out. Her will was crumbling bit by bit, and Worm's control was strengthening. Still, she clenched her fists tightly, desperately fighting against the voice within. With her last ounce of strength, she glanced at the countdown appearing on the panel; flames seemed to ignite in her eyes.
The virtual image of the artificial intelligence suddenly turned towards Isabella, its cold, inorganic eyes flickering with a hint of subtle emotion, as if expressing an inexplicable respect for her determination and actions. After this brief pause, a tremendous rumbling sound echoed from deep within the ship, growing closer as if the entire vessel was coming back to life, preparing to destroy itself in a cataclysm.
Isabella managed a weak smile; that faint sound seemed to be her final declaration of victory.
Weakly collapsing onto the cold floor of the ship's cabin, Isabella's body could barely withstand any more strain; her spine felt like a taut string ready to snap at any moment. Her vision swayed; the alien corpses before her began to blur, while the black Worm continued to writhe on their decaying flesh as if hinting at Isabella's fate. She felt the presence of Worm within her growing stronger; the whispers in her mind intensified as if countless malevolent spirits were whispering secrets that urged her to surrender and submit to them.
However, at that moment, Isabella suddenly burst into laughter—both mad and sorrowful—mocking not only her fate but also those dark forces attempting to control her. Her laughter echoed throughout the cabin; each sound was like a blade piercing through the fear created by Worms.
"Hahaha! You pathetic parasites really think you can conquer me? Do you believe you can devour my will? How arrogant and ridiculous!" Isabella shouted hoarsely, her eyes burning with the fire of defiance.
She gritted her teeth, pointing at the decaying alien corpse, mocking them with a laugh. "Look at you! Unable to even preserve yourselves, yet you dream of becoming the creators who control everything? Do you truly believe these Worms can save you from such a fate?"
The whispers in the darkness grew sharper, the Worms seemingly enraged by her resistance, their voices becoming frantic and urgent as they threatened her. "You are nothing but a mortal; you will ultimately succumb to our power!"
"Succumb?" Isabella let out a harsh laugh, her voice low and filled with disdain. "You parasites can only manipulate minds but will never possess your own bodies! You can only latch onto those foolish beings who crave power, while I am Isabella. My will belongs to me and will never belong to you!"
As she spoke, she gripped the control panel beside her tightly, her nails digging into the metal, feeling the cold sensation travel through her fingers as if it were her last connection to reality. The Worms screamed in her mind, trying to seize her final strength and prevent her from making any foolish moves.
"Do you really think the Light Activation Project can succeed? Do you think I would allow this to continue?" Her laughter was filled with deep resolve, her eyes reflecting a mad determination. "You foolish creatures know only how to consume and parasitize, yet you will never understand where true power comes from!"
The whispers became sharp and agitated. "You will destroy everything! The Light Activation Project is your only hope; it is the only way for you to fulfill your promises. You will bring shame upon your family and render all your efforts meaningless!"
"The Light Activation Project?" Isabella's gaze grew colder, a mocking smile curling at the corners of her lips. "Do you think I do all this to satisfy those empty promises? Do you think I would kneel before you and beg for your forgiveness because of these fabricated hopes?" she said sharply, her tone filled with contempt and determination.
Her laughter suddenly ceased, staring into the darkness of the cabin, her voice low yet powerful. "I am not your puppet, nor will I become your tool! You fear me because you know that once I find the answer, your plans will collapse. And now, I have learned everything; this is your ultimate fate—annihilation."
The Worms seemed to sense her resolve; the threats in her mind became sharper, their voices filled with anger and fear. "You will die! You will lose everything; all will be destroyed! No one will remember you! You shall become our slave, trapped in eternal darkness!"
"So what?" Isabella replied coldly, no trace of fear left in her voice. "I have long ceased to fear death; I live to resist beings like you. I will show you what true power is!"
Just as Isabella's laughter had not fully faded in the ship's echoes, a piercing discordant metallic screech suddenly erupted from the ship, as if some crucial component had jammed. The lights throughout the vessel began to dim rapidly, the cold blue light flickering ominously. Moments later, muffled sounds of the engine sputtering echoed through the ship before it came to a halt, and a red error signal suddenly flashed on the control panel.
"Engine ignition failure."
These four words flickered in front of Isabella, the crimson warning lights piercing her eyes like daggers. She froze, the feeling of victory she had just experienced shattered in an instant, replaced by an indescribable sense of disappointment and shock. She stood there, her breath quickening, hands trembling, fingertips icy.
"No... it can't be..." she murmured, staring at the error message that read "Engine ignition failure," disbelief reflected in her eyes.
At that moment, the ship's artificial intelligence suddenly activated, a blue virtual image materializing before her, flickering with anxious light. It quickly began to check various systems, and the screen filled with a dense list of system statuses, all critical power modules showing as "fault" or "offline."
"Overload anomaly detected," the AI's voice remained calm but carried a sense of urgency. "Boiler Module unable to fully ignite. Possible causes: Power System overload, cooling system failure. Manual inspection of the engine is recommended."
