"Xiao Yue, you're so nice."
He hugged me tightly, planting a kiss on my cheek.
I frowned in annoyance. "Focus on driving."
"Okay."
After ten hours of travel, we finally arrived at Zheng Lingxin's hometown.
The road at the village entrance was rough, filled with potholes and dirt.
As I rolled down the window to get a better look at the surroundings, I was suddenly surrounded by a group of people.
There were elderly folks, children, and a few seemingly ordinary men holding the latest smartphones.
This village felt strange.
I recalled what Zheng Lingxin had said when we first met over the phone.
"She's exceptionally beautiful, has a great figure, snow-white skin, long legs, and she's also..."
I hadn't paid much attention at the time, but now I realized that Zheng Lingxin had deliberately said that for someone to hear.
I reached out and wrapped my arms around his neck. "Darling, why are you wearing a mask?"
He forced a smile that seemed unnatural. "I get car sick."
Car sick yet still driving?
I chuckled. "Then let me drive."
"No need, I like driving."
I smiled and didn't press further.
Of course, I knew he wore the mask to avoid detection along the way.
Zheng Lingxin's home was deep in the village, a three-story small villa.
He had told me before that his family was very poor, with his parents often needing medication and injections due to their health issues.
But now, this small villa seemed completely out of place with that description.
"Cousin!"
A little girl with a ponytail ran over and linked her arm with Zheng Lingxin's.
Zheng Lingxin affectionately patted her head, saying, "Yueyue, this is Xu Yue, my girlfriend."
The little girl looked me up and down, her expression turning cold. "So you are Xu Yue."
With that, she turned and dashed into the house.
Zheng Lingxin smiled awkwardly. "Xiao Yue, don't mind her; Yueyue is young and doesn't understand."
I smiled faintly. "It's fine."
Zheng Lingxin took my hand and led me inside.
A woman in an apron came out. "Oh, so this is Xiao Yue! She's really beautiful."
The woman looked to be in her forties, with dark skin and a face full of wrinkles; she must be Zheng Lingxin's mother.
"Hello, Auntie."
"Hello, hello!" Xu's Mother beamed widely. "You must be tired from the journey; go upstairs and rest for a bit. Dinner will be ready soon."
"Thank you, Auntie."
I followed Xu's Mother upstairs as she led me to a room decorated in soft pinks—a clear indication it was a girl's bedroom.
"Xiao Yue, what do you think of this dress?"
She pulled out a white dress from the wardrobe.
I took it and admired its beauty; it was adorned with crystals.
"It's so pretty."
"You'll look great in it," she said with a smile. "Go try it on."
"Now?"
"Yes."
In front of her, I took off the dress I was wearing.
I could feel Xu's Mother's intense gaze lingering on me as she scrutinized me from head to toe.
It felt like I was being inspected like a product. Suddenly, it dawned on me that Zheng Lingxin brought me back just to sell me. Xu's Mother was evaluating my reproductive value. It seemed that the two of them had made a deal long ago.
Xu's Mother nodded in satisfaction. "Xiao Yue, your skin is really nice. How do you take care of it?"
I smiled shyly. "I just eat casually, without any special care."
"Being young is truly wonderful," she said, her face filled with envy.
After changing into a dress, I looked in the mirror. "Auntie, this dress fits perfectly."
"As long as it fits," she replied with a beaming smile. "Xiao Yue, you should take a nap. I'll call you for dinner."
"Okay."
Once Xu's Mother went downstairs, the smile on my face vanished instantly. I caught a familiar scent in the air. It was the presence of Kindred. It seemed there were other Mantis in the village.
Xu's Mother brought in a glass of milk. "Xiao Yue, have some milk."
"Thank you, Auntie."
I took the milk and had a sip, and soon felt drowsy. I closed my eyes and pretended to fall asleep.
