My Mantis Companions have finally arrived.
"Xu Yue, what are you doing?"
Zheng Lingxin asked sharply, noticing my unusual behavior.
"Nothing."
I quickly averted my gaze and continued walking forward.
"Hurry up."
Zheng Lingxin urged from behind me.
I quickened my pace.
As I walked, I suddenly stopped.
"What's wrong?"
Zheng Lingxin asked, puzzled.
"I think I dropped something."
I crouched down to start searching for it.
"What did you drop?"
Zheng Lingxin asked impatiently.
"It seems to be one of my contact lenses," I whispered. "I can't see the path clearly, so I asked you all to help me with the flashlight."
"Where's your flashlight?"
Zheng Lingxin inquired again.
"I forgot to bring it."
I scratched my head. "Does anyone have a flashlight they can lend me?"
The villagers exchanged glances, but no one answered.
"I have one," Zheng Lingxin said, handing me the flashlight.
I took it and began searching for the contact lens on the ground.
While searching, I discreetly observed my surroundings.
I saw my Mantis Companions jumping onto the tree trunks, hiding among the leaves.
Their sickles glinted with a cold light under the moonlight.
I knew they were ready for battle.
I was ready too.
I understood that tonight would bring a fierce fight.
But I wasn't afraid.
I had mentally prepared myself.
"I found it," I suddenly called out, then stood up and continued leading the villagers forward.
As I walked, a sudden scream pierced through the air from the back of the group. Unable to resist, I turned to look and saw a villager pinned beneath a massive Mantis. Its scythe-like claws had pierced into his body, and he let out a series of agonizing wails.
But this was just the beginning. Soon, more and more Mantises leaped down from the trees, brandishing their blades as they charged toward the villagers. The villagers were paralyzed with fear; some turned to flee while others fell to their knees, begging for mercy. However, the Mantises showed no mercy. They swung their scythes, pinning the villagers down. Their bodies were pierced, blood gushing forth as they emitted their final cries before silence engulfed them.
The Mantises tore them apart, leaving their remains scattered across the ground. Meanwhile, the Mantises chirped joyfully in the woods. Were they celebrating? I wondered. They must be celebrating. They had finally taken their revenge. They could finally find peace.
"You... what are you?" Zheng Lingxin asked in terror as she looked at me. I glanced down at myself; my belly had swollen significantly, and my forelimbs and legs were now visible. I was no longer human.
"I told you, I'm a Mantis," I replied softly. "A well-known creature in nature. Zheng Lingxin, that ovulation injection you gave me might lead to many offspring. Your benefactor probably can't afford to raise them all. Why not take their place instead?"
Zheng Lingxin stared at me in horror, speechless. I smiled and began to remove her clothes.
"Xu Yue, don't!"
Zheng Lingxin struggled to escape, but he was no match for me. My scythe pierced his body. He convulsed once and then lay still. His gaze gradually became vacant. I knew he was close to death. I laughed.
Around us was a scene of blood and chaos. My Mantis Companions were hunting down the men. Meanwhile, I was entwined with Zheng Lingxin in a strange intimacy. My body felt hot. My heart raced with warmth. A white light seemed to appear before my eyes. I recognized it as the glow of pleasure.
Time ticked away, second by second. The men around us gradually fell silent. Zheng Lingxin's pupils began to dilate. His clothes were torn, and his body was covered in wounds. I knew he was about to die. My belly swelled larger and larger. I realized I was pregnant. Zheng Lingxin was dead.
