I felt uneasy under An Zhao's gaze and instinctively took a step back.
Yet he moved forward like a shadow, following my retreat with a stride.
His long legs covered the distance quickly, and in an instant, he stood right in front of me, extending a finger to gently glide across my face.
"What are you doing?" I exclaimed in terror.
A bit of paint clung to his fingertip as he raised an eyebrow and chuckled, "Is this kind of makeup popular in Daughter Kingdom? It's quite cheap!"
Feigning sadness, I replied dramatically, "This general is ugly and must rely on makeup to hide it, lest I offend the Chieftain's eyes."
"An Zhao does not judge a man by his looks," he said earnestly.
"The Chieftain is truly a good person," I exaggerated, wiping away imaginary tears, "I was once a beauty that could topple nations, but alas, I encountered a heartless man who ruined my appearance. My life is so miserable..."
An Zhao watched me cry in silence, and I secretly wondered if my acting was so superb that he was genuinely moved.
"The tears have washed away the makeup," he said softly, "Palace Master..."
Panic surged within me; I had gone too far! My heart raced as I quickly drew my sword. "Don't come any closer! If you lay a finger on me, the entire Daughter Kingdom will not spare you."
Regardless of whether I was worth that threat or not, I decided to intimidate him first.
An Zhao's expression suddenly turned sorrowful. "I didn't mean to..."
What he meant didn't matter to me anymore; I was already making my escape! Covering my face with my hands, I dashed back to my room like a gust of wind and reapplied my makeup.
Little did I know that in just that short time, rumors were already swirling: "The general and the Chieftain fell in love in the forest, but now the general weeps with her face covered."
gossip is truly with women, there's no doubt about it.
I never expected my Warriors to be filled with such love for me. During the voting, I became one of the five women left in Flying Immortal Stronghold. The looks they gave me were all about "supporting your feelings for Chief An."
These women, must they be so touching...
"No, no..." I strongly opposed, as countless gazes shot toward me.
Clearing my throat, I said, "The votes you cast don't necessarily represent Chief An's choice. Why not let Chief An choose personally?"
This was the worst suggestion I had made in years. Yet, An Zhao readily accepted my proposal. After glancing at the results from the Warriors, he quickly wrote down a list on paper.
I compared the two lists and found several identical names. As expected, he was determined to keep me around.
"Doesn't the Chieftain want to hear everyone's opinions?" I asked stubbornly.
"We all listen to the Chieftain," a booming male voice erupted, making my ears ring.
At that moment, I wished I could play dead.
I felt like I was going to die in Flying Immortal Stronghold. I kept my sword close at hand at all times, even while bathing.
"I love bathing; my skin feels so good, oh oh oh..." I hummed a little tune as I washed.
Suddenly, a group of men descended the mountain with five men in tow, leaving me... and the other four female Warriors alone. They were in their element while I felt like I was walking on thin ice.
"Your expression while bathing is quite vivid," a man's voice suddenly echoed from the room!
I looked down and saw a pair of dark eyes reflected on the water's surface, staring intently at... my naked body.
"Pervert!" I screamed, my voice shattering the silence of the room.
An Zhao jumped down from the beam, landing steadily on the ground.
I crouched down into the water, feeling a mix of shock and anger. As expected from a seasoned Chieftain, he was ruthless, and here I was, completely vulnerable.
I glared at him with resentment. "What do you want?"
"Daifu," he softly called my name. The fact that he had even found out my name stirred a complex emotion in his eyes as he asked, "Where did you go afterward?"
I pressed my lips tightly together, remaining silent and filled with caution. Seeing that I wouldn’t speak, he slowly took a step forward, a movement that carried an oppressive weight, making it feel dangerously close to my physical being.
My heart tightened, and I had no choice but to lower my head and answer defiantly, "You killed me. Now I'm a vengeful spirit."
"I didn't mean to kill you," he hurriedly explained.
"Bullshit," I retorted mercilessly.
He sighed deeply and began to clarify, "Although I was resolute in destroying the Yin-Yang Universe Technique and admit that I did harbor murderous intent, when I looked at your peaceful face after you fainted, I just couldn't bring myself to do it at that moment. Your presence was like a miracle; you made the men of Flying Immortal Palace experience respect and equality for the first time. You never prioritized increasing your power; you effortlessly... walked into my heart..."
Oh dear, I thought sarcastically to myself. Is he about to confess his feelings now? Ugh!
