August was a sweltering month. A lot happened for me and Liu Jian during this time. 0

A new client took me out for dinner, and we talked about many things—work-related matters and life in general. I also met his wife and their child. His wife was a gentle woman, and their son was adorable, just starting elementary school. Their family atmosphere was warm and inviting, which made me envious. 0

Liu Jian applied for a new Weibo account, planning to create a travel-themed social media profile. With the rise of short video platforms in recent years, many travel bloggers have made a fortune, and Liu Jian has always had a keen interest in travel, so he wanted to give it a try. We discussed which places would be good for him to film, and he asked for my opinion. I told him I supported him no matter where he wanted to go. 0

Liu Jian said that once he made some money, he would take me to a place I wanted to visit. I smiled and replied that I didn't want to go anywhere; I just wanted to be with him. Liu Jian promised he would work hard. 0

This month was also significant for me. I successfully passed an interview with a company and signed a contract with them. On my first day at work, Liu Jian accompanied me to tour the company. It was a large organization with many employees who were all busy at work. 0

As Liu Jian observed the bustling environment, he remarked, "This is great." 0

"You could work here too," I suggested. 0

"No thanks, I'll stick to doing what I love," he replied. 0

"Well, whatever you choose to do, I'll support you," I assured him. 0

"Thank you, Xiao Wan." 0

"No need to thank me." 0

Liu Jian was about to start a new round of chemotherapy, and I felt a sense of worry creeping in. His previous attending physician had devised a new treatment plan that might require surgery if followed through. When I discussed this with Liu Jian, his expression was grave. 0

"If the surgery doesn't work well, I might still go with the previous plan," he said. 0

"But that would be very harmful to your body," I protested. 0

"At least I wouldn't have to undergo surgery," he replied. 0

"But..." 0

"Xiao Wan, enough. I've already made my decision." 0

"Then... let's just trust the doctor," I conceded. 0

"Mm." 0

I informed Liu Jian's parents about the situation, and they rushed over overnight. Together, we went to the hospital to meet with Liu Jian's attending physician. The doctor explained in detail the necessity of the surgery and the potential risks involved. 0

Liu Jian's parents looked somber; they hadn't anticipated the severity of their son's condition. 0

"Doctor, is there any other way?" his father asked. 0

"We've considered all options; this is currently the best treatment plan for our patient," the doctor replied. 0

"Then... what are the chances of success for the surgery?" his mother inquired anxiously. 0

"Well... we will do our best," the doctor assured them. 0

After leaving the doctor's office, Liu Jian's parents maintained a troubled silence. 0

Xu's Dad turned to me and said, "Xiao Wan, please talk to Liu Jian and encourage him to have the surgery." 0

"Uncle, I... I will," I promised. 0

"Sigh, we should be the ones convincing him; it's unfair to put that on you." 0

"Uncle, please don't say that. Liu Jian and I are married; we should support each other." 0

"You are a good child. Liu Jian is truly fortunate to have you as his wife." 0

"Uncle, please don't say that." 0

That evening, I video called Liu Jian and asked him, "Are you really not considering surgery?" 0

"No." 0

"But..." 0

"Xiao Wan, don't try to persuade me. I've made up my mind." 0

"But..." 0

"No buts. We agreed not to compromise easily." 0

"Alright." 0

"Don't worry, I will do my best to cooperate with the treatment." 0

"I believe in you." 0

Liu Jian's parents did not stay in Beijing to accompany him for the surgery; they only spent a few days at the hospital before returning home. They said they were getting old and couldn't handle too much stress, plus there were crops at home that needed tending, so they couldn't be away for long. Liu Jian understood his parents and didn't say much more. 0
