A man and a woman, weary from their travels, knocked on the door of the county office, only to be greeted by a man dressed in elegant attire, exuding an air of leisure.
"Why did it take you so long to arrive?"
It was unexpected that even the errand workers would act so high and mighty; bringing their family along and delaying the start of work time repeatedly was simply outrageous.
The Advisor and acting County Magistrate, Huo Zhenyan, glanced at the pair with a slight lift of his chin, his eyes filled with disdain. He sighed softly and pointed at the half-grown weeds in the courtyard. "Clear out the weeds today; they’re quite bothersome to look at."
The Advisor continued, "By the way, the newly appointed County Magistrate is coming soon. Do as you please; after all, I’m the one footing the bill."
The short man looked indignant. Had he really been reduced to a mere errand boy? This was unacceptable! His eyebrows shot up, and his eyes widened in disbelief.
"What? Are you not convinced?"
Ma Tianjin glared at him with a stern face, fists clenched tightly. "I am the new County Magistrate!"
He had heard that the position of County Magistrate in Fengcheng County had been vacant for a long time, leading to chaos within the county. Little did he expect that upon his arrival, this damned Advisor would treat him with such disregard!
The Advisor squinted at him for a moment before saying, "So you heard what I just said? You can get busy now; I’m feeling tired..." With that, he stretched lazily and strolled toward the back hall, dragging his feet.
"Oh, right." The Advisor turned back again. "Fengcheng County is in dire straits; taxes aren’t coming in. You should make an effort to collect some money and be frugal with it!"
Hadn’t he just said to spend freely? Why was it suddenly not allowed now that he knew Ma Tianjin was the County Magistrate?
Ma Tianjin stood there completely dumbfounded, his small face flushed bright red, mouth slightly agape.
Beside him, the petite and charming Liu Xiaoyuan sighed despondently. "My dear husband, it seems we've gone from a wolf's den into a tiger's lair."
They were truly unfortunate—having offended powerful figures in the capital, they were demoted only to encounter the bully of an Advisor here.
"Did you hear that Master Huo went out of town again yesterday?" said the Yard Officer.
The second Yard Officer chuckled lewdly, a sly grin spreading across his face. "He brought back several beautiful girls this time. We're in for a treat."
Early in the morning, the two were yawning and boasting. Ma Tianjin, keenly sensing news about someone, lowered his head and slowly began sweeping the courtyard. The broom in his hand moved listlessly as he quietly edged closer to eavesdrop. He had to find out what kind of extraordinary abilities Master Huo possessed that allowed him to act so arrogantly for so long without facing any consequences!
Out of town? Beautiful girls? Robbery? Abduction? Forcing women into prostitution? This was outrageous! Ma Tianjin thought to himself, frowning deeply.
"Who are you?" the Yard Officer asked suspiciously, eyeing him.
Ma Tianjin forced a smile, his lips barely lifting. "Isn't Advisor usually late? I haven't seen him yet."
After getting up early, he had taken a stroll around the county, but it wasn't because he was following Huo Zhenyan's orders to collect money; he was gathering evidence against Huo Zhenyan!
However, no matter how he asked, people on the street had only two reactions when they heard Huo Zhenyan's name.
"Oh, that Huo Zhenyan..."
"Ah, Huo Zhenyan..."
The vague responses made it hard not to suspect how long Huo Zhenyan had been a bully.
Later, he visited a pawn shop, and as soon as he inquired about Huo Zhenyan, someone rushed out with a cleaver.
"What the hell are you asking about Huo Zhenyan for? Are you looking for trouble?"
He heard that was one of Huo Zhenyan's businesses.
A black market! A swindler! Truly living up to its reputation!
He must restore a piece of pure land to Fengcheng County! He must drive out all the bullies within the county! Ma Tianjin clenched his fists, his gaze resolute.
In his ears, a mocking voice drifted in: "I never expected you to care so much about me, my lord. I am truly honored." Huo Zhenyan smiled wickedly, bending slightly to blow teasingly at his neck, the breath brushing lightly against him.
Ma Tianjin shivered, instinctively taking a step back. "M-Master, good morning."
Though he appeared fair and bright, and his smile radiated warmth, why did Ma Tianjin always feel that there was a grand scheme hidden behind Huo Zhenyan's grin? It made him uneasy, a sense of foreboding creeping into his heart.
"By the way, my lord," Huo Zhenyan continued, "if you want to inquire about me next time, you can just ask directly. There's no need to run around the county so early; it's quite exhausting."
Ma Tianjin was left speechless.
Was he already calculating things in his mind?
He knew! And yet he spoke so casually about it?
Ma Tianjin wiped the sweat from his brow and stammered, "Well, I was just going to understand the people's sentiments..."
Huo Zhenyan's gaze made him feel guilty. Ma Tianjin quickly deflected, avoiding eye contact as he found an excuse to return to his room. He needed to find his dear wife to soothe his startled heart, hurrying away.
Huo Zhenyan narrowed his eyes. Once Ma Tianjin's figure vanished, he couldn't help but curl his lips into a barely noticeable cold smirk, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly.
