Her whole body ached, feeling heavy as if weighed down by some heavy object.
Ma Tianjin opened her weary eyes to find herself in front of an unfamiliar canopy, confusion etched on her face as her brows furrowed.
"You're awake?" Huo Zhenyan asked, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.
Ma Tianjin quickly turned her head, startled to find Huo Zhenyan's face less than an inch away from hers. She screamed in panic, "Y-you..."
How could he be in her bed? What had happened between them?
Her mind was a chaotic mess, like a tangled ball of yarn. All she wanted was to get up and splash some water on her face to wake herself up. In her flustered state, she tried to rise.
Huo Zhenyan kindly reminded her, "You're not wearing any clothes." His calm voice struck Ma Tianjin like a bolt from the blue.
With a loud thud in her head, she dove back under the covers, clutching the blanket tightly with both hands. "Y-you..."
Huo Zhenyan was in high spirits, the corners of his mouth lifting as he teased, "Are you stunned? Is that all you can say?"
Ma Tianjin looked at her bare self beneath the blanket, tears welling up in her eyes. "You drugged me!"
Huo Zhenyan showed no remorse at all, shrugging casually. "Your figure is too poor; it doesn't even compare to your lady's." As he spoke, his hand reached out toward Ma Tianjin inappropriately.
Ma Tianjin swatted his hand away with force, her voice laced with anger. "Hey!"
She rummaged through her memories, but her mind was blank. "Did we... do something?"
"You tell me," Huo Zhenyan replied with a smug smile, his face full of mockery.
Ma Tianjin's eyes were red, tears swirling in her gaze. How could her innocence be buried at the hands of this rogue?
"You scoundrel! You swing both ways, you pervert! From now on, you are not allowed to come within ten feet of me... no, make it thirty!" she shouted, her emotions running high.
"Do you think you have the right to choose?" Huo Zhenyan said arrogantly, his eyes filled with dominance. "By the way, you need to tell me why you were disguised as a man pretending to be the county magistrate."
This was the greatest crisis she had ever faced! Her secret was exposed—would she be charged with treason and face execution, dragging her whole family down with her?
Ma Tianjin panicked, her eyes filled with terror. "You are so annoying!"
Fuming, she turned away from Huo Zhenyan and hurriedly dressed, flustered as she rushed out. She needed to quickly warn Liu Xiaoyuan to escape, her steps frantic and hurried.
Watching her leave, Huo Zhenyan did not pursue her. Instead, he lay back on the bed with a satisfied expression, the air still fragrant with her scent.
His hand reached under the pillow and pulled out a long piece of white cloth—her binding cloth. It was stiff and long; he wouldn’t allow her to torment herself any longer. His fingers gently stroked the binding cloth.
Recalling last night, he thought it was a miracle. He had plunged Ma Tianjin into cold water for two hours.
Faced with the naked Ma Tianjin who continuously tempted him, he felt his heart stir but chose instead to force himself to remain calm in the cold water, gritting his teeth as it poured over him.
She was different from other women; at least she made him willing to wait, a hint of tenderness rising in his heart.
Back in her room, Ma Tianjin was frantic. She quickly began packing her belongings, hastily stuffing clothes into her bundle. "Xiaoyuan, you need to escape quickly."
If the truth came out, she might be fine, but she couldn’t let Liu Xiaoyuan suffer because of her. Her voice trembled with a hint of tears.
Liu Xiaoyuan froze. "What’s wrong?"
"I... I was seen! Huo Zhenyan knows I'm a woman now."
"Yanyan, you..."
Liu Xiaoyuan noticed her face was flushed and her movements were somewhat stiff. "Could it be that you..."
"Don't ask!" Ma Tianjin interrupted her. If she kept asking, Yanyan would just get more upset! How could she be so foolish as to let Huo Zhenyan take advantage of her?
Ma Tianjin gritted her teeth in anger, the sound of her teeth clenching echoing in the air. She shook off the image of Huo Zhenyan's arrogant face from her mind. "Anyway, you should leave quickly, get out of here, and don’t go back home. Find someone else to marry..."
"Yanyan, I can't leave you alone..."
Unbeknownst to them, Huo Zhenyan had already arrived outside the door, his voice cold as it drifted in. "None of you are leaving."
Ma Tianjin stepped in front of Liu Xiaoyuan, spreading her arms like a hen protecting her chicks. "What do you want?"
Huo Zhenyan turned his gaze to Liu Xiaoyuan. "Madam, I believe Master Ma will need you by her side, right, Yanyan?" He used the title he had overheard outside.
Ma Tianjin swallowed hard, fear gripping her as she watched the claw-like hand reach toward her shoulder. Did that mean he wouldn’t expose her? But why did she feel like she was destined to become something unspeakable? Her heart was filled with unease and confusion.
