She felt as if she had fallen ill recently; nothing could lift her spirits. Even the money she "tricked" out for bridge repairs didn't bring her joy. Her gaze was vacant as she stared blankly at the lotus pond.
Huo Zhenyan stood beside her, looking at the pond with an expectant expression because the successful match from the Zhu Family had also come to participate.
Ma Tianjin spoke sourly, "If you can't bear to part ways, then go join her!"
"Are you jealous?"
"Pfft! I'm not!" Ma Tianjin exclaimed loudly, a hint of stubbornness on her face.
Huo Zhenyan looked at her and remained silent for a long time. Ma Tianjin lowered her head, feeling a bit disdainful of herself. How had she become so difficult?
After a moment, Huo Zhenyan spoke up: "Don't say things you'll regret later."
Couldn’t he see how similar that lady was to her? There was a hint of helplessness in his eyes.
Ma Tianjin wanted to argue, but looking into his serious eyes, she found herself at a loss for words and could only sulk in silence, her lips slightly pouting.
From the lotus pond came a commotion, and someone in the crowd shouted, "A small boat has collided, the County Magistrate's Wife has fallen into the river..."
Ma Tianjin rushed over, her steps hurried, nearly stumbling. "Xiaoyuan!"
She couldn't let anything happen to Xiaoyuan! Just as Ma Tianjin was about to jump into the water to save her, Huo Zhenyan grabbed her arm tightly. "Aren't you afraid of being seen if you jump in like this?"
He scolded her before turning and diving into the water with swift movements.
Ma Tianjin clenched her fists tightly, her heart racing. Xiaoyuan was her only friend, her support, and someone she could never repay.
She could die herself, but Xiaoyuan mustn't be harmed; her face was filled with anxiety and worry.
Huo Zhenyan managed to pull Liu Xiaoyuan out of the water. Ma Tianjin rushed over and hugged her tightly, wrapping her arms around her with all her strength. "Xiaoyuan, please don't scare me!"
Liu Xiaoyuan coughed a few times; she had choked on some water but was otherwise fine. Someone brought a blanket to cover her.
"She needs a doctor and some rest. Are you still going to hold her like that?" Huo Zhenyan asked.
Feeling embarrassed, Ma Tianjin slowly released Liu Xiaoyuan from her embrace, her hands gradually loosening as a hint of awkwardness crossed her face.
Huo Zhenyan carried Liu Xiaoyuan forward while Ma Tianjin followed behind. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was off; Huo Zhenyan's gaze towards Liu Xiaoyuan seemed unusual...
Suddenly, she saw Huo Zhenyan lean down and gently kiss Liu Xiaoyuan on the forehead.
The crowd gasped in surprise.
Wow, so Master Huo's goal is the County Magistrate's Wife?
Or is he just the type to play both sides, planning to take them both as his own?
Ma Tianjin was stunned, her mouth agape. Once she regained her composure, she pointed at Huo Zhenyan and shouted, "You’ve laid your hands on me and now you want to touch my wife? Damn it, beast!"
Ma Tianjin ranted for a long time, calling him a rogue, a lecher, and fickle. Meanwhile, Huo Zhenyan leisurely sipped his tea, occasionally offering her a cup to soothe her throat.
He simply said, "I've thought about it, and Esteemed Lady suits me better than that Zhu Family Miss."
Ma Tianjin was furious, her face flushed red. "No way! She is my wife!"
"I don't know why you're pretending to be a man, but Liu Xiaoyuan is in her prime. Are you really going to have her live a life of loneliness with you, a fake man?" Huo Zhenyan said slowly, his gaze calm as he looked at Ma Tianjin.
Ma Tianjin couldn't find a retort; her lips trembled slightly as guilt washed over her.
"I don't care! You can marry anyone you want, but you must not touch Xiaoyuan!" Her eyes were resolute, her fists clenched tightly.
Huo Zhenyan sighed and shook his head gently. "Yanyan, you were the one who told me to marry. I agreed, and you all said I could choose whoever I wanted."
He continued, "So either you marry me or she marries me."
