Two Young Thugs robbed and killed a man, which ended up destroying a city that was once full of promise.
After the incident, the entire city's leadership underwent a major overhaul, economic support was cut off, and several universities relocated.
The loss of countless talented individuals caused the city's development to plummet, and it struggled for over twenty years to recover. The reason for such severe consequences was that the victim of Two Young Thugs was none other than Zhuang Bingchang, the Chinese Father of Soybeans, whose contributions were comparable to those of old Yuan. So how did this all happen?

Incident Occurrence Date: March 12, 2002.
Incident Occurrence Location: Shandong Province, Laiyang City.
That evening, two students from a vocational college, Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang, were kicked out of an internet café by their boss for being too engrossed in online gaming. Unwilling to give up their gaming session so easily, the two young men made a decision that would impact the fate of their city for the next twenty years.
They first acquired a knife and, accompanied by a few younger associates, loitered near the Laiyang Municipal Kindergarten, their eyes darting around in search of a target. They soon robbed a passerby of over 1,000 yuan, which at the time was a significant amount—enough for them to indulge for a while.
However, Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang found robbing too easy. After sending their associates away, they decided to commit another robbery before heading back to the internet café.
At that moment, a middle-aged man walked past a small alley next to the Laiyang Dongguan Village Hydropower Office. The two exchanged glances and rushed forward to block his path. Xu Mouguang brazenly extended his arm to obstruct the man’s way and demanded money. To their surprise, instead of complying, the man began lecturing them at length.
Furious at what they perceived as an affront to their authority, Li Jinhui drew his knife and viciously stabbed the man several times. Unfortunately, these stabs landed in vital areas.
The man clutched his wounds in agony, his face contorted in disbelief as he collapsed to the ground, bleeding profusely until he eventually lost consciousness.
Being students, Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang were understandably panicked; fear flickered in their eyes as they trembled slightly. However, they believed the man was merely unconscious. After robbing him of his belongings, they fled quickly without realizing that they had severed his right femoral artery, causing him to bleed out rapidly.
When the police arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the incident, they were shocked to discover that the man lying on the ground was Zhuang Bingchang, whose contributions were akin to those of an elder statesman in China’s agricultural sector.
Following the incident, leaders from Laiyang Agricultural College were horrified upon hearing the news; their faces turned pale and lips quivered as they hurriedly reported the matter to higher authorities.
The senior leadership was furious upon learning the news, for Zhuang Bingchang was a national treasure-level agricultural expert.
Years ago, he studied abroad in Germany, where various temptations were employed to keep such an outstanding talent from returning home. However, for Zhuang Bingchang, there was only one thing in his mind: to dedicate his lifelong knowledge to the agricultural research of his homeland.
After completing his studies, he resolutely rejected generous offers from other countries and overcame numerous difficulties to return to his motherland.
Not only did he lead his team to develop China's second cloned cow, but his work on soybean seedling technology also placed him at the forefront of the world. Even Old Yuan praised his collaboration with experts in rice research, believing that together they could certainly address the nation's food crisis.
In March 2002, Shandong Laiyang Agricultural College earnestly invited Zhuang Bingchang to teach at their institution. Considering that Laiyang was then focusing on the cultivation and research of high-quality soybeans and had a good research environment, the 45-year-old Zhuang Bingchang gladly accepted the invitation. Little did anyone know that he had yet to give a single lecture to the students.
Tragically, before he could nurture more outstanding agricultural talents, misfortune struck.
On his very first day in Laiyang, he encountered an unforeseen disaster.
Initially, senior leaders suspected that an overseas spy organization had assassinated the expert. However, to everyone's astonishment, the police quickly identified the culprits as two vocational students, Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang.
When the police arrived to apprehend them, the two were nonchalantly playing games at an internet café. The 17-year-old Xu Mouguang even arrogantly declared, "I'm a minor; why would you arrest me?"
With his legs crossed and eyes glued to the computer screen, he shouted carelessly.
It turned out that Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang were notorious local delinquents. They spent their tuition and living expenses on food and entertainment, resorting to robbing weaker students when they ran out of money for gaming.
Due to their intimidating demeanor—glaring at others and waving their arms threateningly—students dared not voice their anger and complied by handing over their pocket money.
Some students, seeing their imposing presence, followed them around like lackeys, fearing their wrath.
To continue gaming online, they had been robbing passersby for quite some time.
Although there were many reports made, the perpetrators, being minors at the time of their crimes and not causing extremely severe consequences, never faced harsh penalties; at most, they were detained for a few days.
As a result, they grew increasingly reckless, ultimately leading to a tragedy.
On the night of March 12, 2002, Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang were kicked out of an internet café by the owner due to lack of money.
Just as they were preparing to rob someone with their younger accomplices, Zhuang Bingchang, who had just arrived in Laiyang by plane, found that his hotel lacked some daily necessities. He decided to go to a nearby store to buy what he needed. Little did he know that upon returning, he would encounter Li Jinhui and Xu Mouguang in the midst of their robbery.
Seeing the two dressed like students, Zhuang Bingchang, as their mentor, immediately began to lecture them sternly. Standing tall with a serious expression, he pointed at them and passionately spoke about right and wrong. Unexpectedly, this provoked the violent instincts within them. With fierce looks in their eyes, they drew knives and charged at Zhuang Bingchang. Caught off guard, he was overwhelmed and stabbed multiple times before collapsing to the ground, losing his life. It was tragic that he had such grand aspirations yet met such a grim fate on this land.
Not long after, the main perpetrator Li Jinhui, who had just turned 18, was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad.
Xu Mouguang and the other younger accomplices received life sentences or fixed-term imprisonment due to their status as minors.
However, the losses they caused were incalculable.
Had Zhuang Bingchang not been murdered, perhaps soybeans in our country would have been as high-yielding as rice, eliminating the need for large-scale imports from abroad.
Due to chaotic local law enforcement and inadequate protection for scientists, following the incident, leaders in Laiyang City were dismissed from their positions, economic support was cut off, and many universities relocated for the safety of their faculty and students. This led to a significant loss of talent from Laiyang to other regions.
From then on, the development of Laiyang City plummeted. What once held great promise for agricultural research quickly turned into a mirage. For over twenty years, it struggled to recover; it truly became a pest that destroyed an entire forest and devastated a city.
