I thought for a moment and said, "But this is Tang Mufeng's heartfelt gesture. If I refuse, he might be hurt."
Wanyi snorted, "If he truly cares for you, he should protect you well, not just give you perfume."
I was left speechless. That did make some sense.
But what should I do? I really liked this bottle of perfume.
After hesitating for a moment, I smiled at Tang Mufeng and said, "I appreciate your kindness, but this perfume is too precious; I can't accept it."
Tang Mufeng's face turned pale. "Does the young lady dislike this perfume?"
I quickly shook my head. "Of course not."
Tang Mufeng lowered his gaze. "This perfume was bought with several months of my salary. I know the young lady has a noble status and has used many fine things, but this is the best I could afford..."
He pressed his lips together. "If the young lady truly doesn't like it, I can return it."
I was taken aback. Why was he acting like this?
"Alright, I'll accept the perfume," I conceded. "But this is a one-time exception, understand?"
Tang Mufeng's eyes lit up. "Yes, young lady."
I thought for a moment again. "You can't give this perfume to anyone else, got it?"
Tang Mufeng: "???"
I said seriously, "If you dare to give this perfume to someone else, I'll break your legs."
Tang Mufeng: "…I wouldn't dare."
I nodded in satisfaction. "Very good."
The Second Consort was hosting a flower-viewing ball and had invited countless socialites.
As the daughter of the Grand Marshal, I naturally received an invitation as well.
But I had no desire to attend at all.
There’s no other reason; it’s just that I’m not good at Ballroom Dance. Before I came here, I was single, had never been in a relationship, and certainly didn’t know how to dance. After arriving, things got worse; I was busy every day tormenting the male lead and had no time to learn any Ballroom Dance.
But the Second Consort was so enthusiastic that I couldn’t refuse her. After thinking it over, I decided to bring Wanyi along with me. When the time came, I would let Wanyi handle the socializing for me.
At the ball, I watched as men and women embraced each other, feeling somewhat out of place. Although I was a modern person, I had never been to places like dance halls or bars, so this scene was quite unfamiliar to me. I found an excuse and said to Wanyi, “ Wanyi, I’m going out for some fresh air. You can take care of things here for me.”
Wanyi obediently nodded. “Yes, Miss.”
I left with Tang Mufeng. That’s right; Tang Mufeng was now my personal guard, and he had to follow me whenever I needed him.
“Miss, you seem unhappy?” Tang Mufeng asked softly as he followed behind me.
“Hmm.” I lazily responded.
“Is it because you can’t dance?” he asked again.
I thought to myself: … This guy really doesn’t know when to stop talking! If you can’t say anything useful, then don’t say anything at all!
I shot him a glare and quickened my pace.
Seeing this, Tang Mufeng hurriedly caught up. “Miss, please don’t be angry; I’m just concerned about you.”
“Who asked for your concern?” I muttered under my breath.
Tang Mufeng fell silent for a moment before quietly saying, “Miss, I will always protect you.”
I was taken aback. “???”
What’s wrong with this guy?
Is it okay to say such things casually?
"You protect me?" I scoffed, "You can't even beat me; how can you protect me?"
Tang Mufeng replied, "…I can learn."
I rolled my eyes and ignored him.
Deep in the garden stood a large tree, beneath which was a stone bench.
I walked over and sat down on the bench, hoping to take a nap.
Tang Mufeng took off his coat and draped it over my shoulders. "Miss, it's windy here; be careful not to catch a cold."
I was speechless.
This guy is surprisingly considerate.
I realized I was starting to like him more and more.
