"Miss," Tang Mufeng gazed at me, "I will not marry Wanyi."
"You..." I frowned, feeling a surge of anger. "Why are you so stubborn?"
"Miss," Tang Mufeng said softly, "I do not wish to marry Wanyi; I only want to stay by your side to protect you."
"I don't need your protection." I shook off his hand. "You are mine, so you should follow my orders!"
"Miss," Tang Mufeng looked straight at me, "are you asking me to go against your commands?"
I was speechless.
How dare he speak to me like that?
"Tang Mufeng!" I was furious. "You have some nerve to defy me!"
For a moment, Tang Mufeng's gaze dimmed.
But soon, he regained his composure.
"Yes," he admitted, "I did defy you."
I glared at him, trembling with rage.
Was he trying to rebel?
"Miss," Tang Mufeng looked at me, "will you punish me?"
I was at a loss for words.
Punish him?
How would I do that?
Should I hit him?
Could I even do that?
"Miss," Tang Mufeng continued, "if you intend to punish me, please do it now. Otherwise, I will take it as your consent for me to remain by your side."
I was stunned.
Did he really dare to threaten me?
He really is something else!
I raised my hand and pointed at him, exasperated. "Do you believe I can make you leave?"
"I do," Tang Mufeng nodded. "But Miss, I won't be leaving."
I was speechless.
I didn't understand him anymore.
Hadn't he always wanted to leave me?
If I wanted him gone, why wouldn't he just go?
"Miss," Tang Mufeng said, "I know that your kindness towards me is simply because I am your pet. You can decide my fate at will... but Miss, I will not leave you."
I was taken aback.
What did he mean by that?
Why wouldn't he leave me?
"Miss," Tang Mufeng slowly released my hand, "Please don't try to send me away. No matter how you treat me, I will not leave you."
I was silent.
Suddenly, my heart softened.
Why wouldn't he leave me?
Could it be... that he liked me?
No, that couldn't be true.
How could he possibly like me?
His kindness was merely a reflection of my role as his owner.
Once he met a girl he truly liked, he would surely leave me...
I closed my eyes and sighed.
Forget it; since he didn't want to go, I might as well let him stay.
After all, he would leave eventually anyway.
"Do as you wish," I said weakly, waving my hand. "If you want to stay, then stay."
With that, I turned and walked away. This time, Tang Mufeng did not stop me.
But I could feel his gaze following my retreating figure. It lingered until I stepped into the courtyard and closed the gate behind me, at which point his sight finally vanished.
I leaned against the door, slowly crouching down. I hugged my knees and buried my face in them. My heart felt hollow, as if I had lost something. Yet I couldn't quite articulate what it was that I had lost.
Perhaps… I hadn't lost anything at all. This was merely an illusion of mine. My feelings for Tang Mufeng were nothing more than a master's affection for a pet. I wouldn't lose him, nor would I invest too much emotion in him.
Tang Mufeng's anger at my defiance cast a shadow over the entire General's Mansion, enveloping it in gloom.
By afternoon, news spread through the marketplace. A mutiny had erupted at the Suburban Military Camp; the Rebels had reached the outskirts of the city, causing significant losses.
The last flicker of hope in my heart extinguished. It seemed that the plot of the mutiny was set to unfold after all. In a few days, the Governor would gather his elite forces with his adopted son, Cao Peng, and set out soon.
Among the troops was the Warrior Prodigy, who faced death without fear and possessed unwavering courage—none other than Tang Mufeng himself. The Governor recognized Tang Mufeng's exceptional talent and promoted him along the way; he had finally become a trusted aide.
And then what?
