I hurried to Duke Rong's mansion, my steps quick and my heart racing. I quietly slipped in through the back courtyard. 0

Gao Zhai was right; something felt off in the royal residence tonight. Normally, guards stood at the front gate, and there were patrols in the back courtyard, yet I made my way to the Inner Courtyard without seeing a single servant. I cautiously glanced around, hardly daring to breathe. 0

The study had a faint light glowing, and I could vaguely see two figures moving inside. 0

I crouched down, trying to be as quiet as possible, and crept around to the back of the study. Pressing myself against the window, I instinctively perked up my ears, hoping to catch what was happening inside. 0

"I never expected to fall into your trap, you old fox!" It was Gao Shuo's voice. My heart tightened, and my body froze. I quickly peeked through the crack in the door, my eyes widening in shock. Gao Shuo was kneeling on the ground, bound by two men in black, his face filled with anger and resentment. 0

"I have navigated the political waters for fifty years. Even the late king rose to power with my support. With your little tricks, do you think you can deceive me? If I were to hand over the military token to you, by the time you ascend to the throne, there would be no place left for me in this world," Prime Minister Qi said, leaning back in his chair at the desk, a smug expression on his face as he looked down at Gao Shuo with disdain. 0

He stood up slowly and drew his sword, pointing it at Gao Shuo. Gripping the hilt tightly, he pulled it free with a swift motion that sent a cold glint through the air. "Goodbye, Duke Rong." 0

As he spoke, he raised his arm high, preparing to strike. 0

Just as I was about to cry out in alarm, my mouth opened slightly in panic but I quickly covered it, fearing it would ruin everything. 0

At that moment, several hidden weapons suddenly flew through the crack of the door with a whistling sound. "Whoosh!" The two men in black behind Gao Shuo fell to the ground without a sound. 0

Prime Minister Qi was taken aback by this sudden turn of events; his eyes widened in shock and disbelief. Before he could shout out, the door burst open with a loud crash as a group of Royal Guards rushed in. They moved swiftly and efficiently, pinning both him and Gao Shuo firmly to the ground. The two struggled briefly but found themselves unable to move. 0

A figure cloaked in dark yellow emerged slowly from the crowd, their robes swaying gently with each step. 0

It was Gao Zhai. 0

I guessed correctly; Gao Zhai, who seemed indifferent to court affairs in recent years, had secretly trained a group of Royal Guards. The entire garrison in the capital was made up of Gao Zhai's people. I marveled inwardly while my heart tightened at the complexity of the situation. 0

"Prime Minister Qi has always traveled with thousands of elite soldiers. I never expected that tonight, just to ambush Duke Rong, he would only bring a mere few hundred assassins," Gao Zhai said, a slight smirk curling at the corners of his mouth, his face bearing a hint of mockery. 0

"In one night, I've captured two rebels. I truly don't know what to say anymore." 0

As he finished speaking, he waved his hand elegantly through the air, and the Royal Guards began to escort Prime Minister Qi out. Qi struggled and cursed as he was taken away. 0

Gao Zhai stepped in front of Gao Shuo, letting out a light laugh that carried a complex emotion. Just as he was about to speak, I couldn't hold back any longer and pushed open the window with all my might. With a loud crash, the window swung open, and I hurriedly leaped inside. I stumbled upon landing but quickly steadied myself and knelt before Gao Shuo, my knees hitting the cold ground heavily. 0

Upon seeing me, Gao Zhai's expression turned instantly pale, his brows furrowing tightly. He scrutinized my maid's attire, his gaze sweeping over me until realization dawned on him; a flicker of anger flashed in his eyes. 0

I knelt on the ground, my forehead striking the icy floor repeatedly until it turned red. "Please have mercy, Your Majesty," I pleaded, my voice laced with desperation as tears welled in my eyes. 0

Gao Zhai approached me, looking down from his height. "Chaoge," he said, "now that it has come to this, I can no longer coexist with Gao Shuo in this world. You want me to spare him? So you wish for my life?" His voice trembled slightly, revealing a hint of helplessness and sorrow. 0

I lifted my head to glance back at Gao Shuo. He looked at me with inscrutable thoughts swirling in his eyes, his gaze cold. Suddenly, he yanked me towards him; a dagger appeared in his hand without me noticing. His movements were rough as he pressed the blade against my throat, instantly drawing blood and causing me to gasp in pain. 0

Gao Zhai was taken aback, leaning forward as if to intervene but was halted by Gao Shuo's icy command: "Let them all retreat." His voice was cold and filled with menace. 0
