Chen Yan lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. This was a hotel suite, and he liked it here, but no matter how much he liked it, it wasn't his home. He was reluctant to bring Beibei over to play. The thought of buying a house flashed through his mind, and he immediately took out his phone to call Luo Ming.
"Hey, Luo Ming, help me buy a house."
"Sure, boss. What kind of house do you want?"
"Two bedrooms and a living room."
"Got it, boss. I'll take care of it right away."
Chen Yan hung up the phone. He closed his eyes, thinking about Beibei. He wanted to give her a home. He wanted her to stay by his side forever. He wanted to be with her.
The next morning, Chen Yan was awakened by the sound of his phone ringing. He picked it up and saw that it was a call from his mother.
"Hello, Mom," he answered.
"Chen Yan, where did you go yesterday?"
"I went on a business trip."
"You’re always out and about. When are you going to settle down?"
"Aren't I doing fine now?"
"Fine? You're 28 years old and still don’t have a girlfriend."
"I have a girlfriend."
"Don't lie to me; I know you don't."
"I really do have one."
"Then bring her home for me to see."
"I'm very busy with work right now; I don't have time."
"You should still date, no matter how busy you are. You can't let work delay your lifelong matters."
"I know, I'll get to it soon."
"You better hurry, or I'll have your dad arrange a blind date for you."
"Alright, I got it. I have things to do, so I'll hang up now."
Chen Yan ended the call.
He lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling.
He thought about Liu Yuan again.
How was he going to deal with her?
Suddenly, a good idea struck him.
He quickly got up, dressed, and walked out.
...
Chen Yan left the hotel, got in his car, and drove to the neighborhood where Liu Yuan lived.
He took out his phone and called Luo Ming. "Luo Ming, help me buy a house."
"Sure, boss. What kind of house do you want?"
"Just buy a house in the neighborhood where Liu Yuan lives."
"Got it, boss. I'll take care of it right away."
Chen Yan hung up the phone.
He drove away.
...
Beibei was at kindergarten, chatting with her friends.
Child A: "Beibei, what does your dad do?"
Beibei looked at him and said, "My dad is in business."
Child B: "Is your dad rich?"
Beibei replied, "I guess so."
Child C: "Does your dad treat you well?"
Beibei nodded and said, "He treats me very well."
Child D: "Does your dad buy you toys?"
Beibei smiled and said, "Of course he does."
"Did you buy any toys?" Child A asked.
Beibei looked at him and replied, "I bought a lot—there's a big airplane, a big car, and even a Barbie doll."
"Your dad is really nice to you," Child B remarked.
Beibei nodded, "Of course he is."
"Beibei, did your dad buy you a big mansion yesterday?" Child C inquired.
"Yeah, a really big mansion," Beibei confirmed.
"Your dad is amazing," Child D said.
"Of course! My dad is the best dad in the world," Beibei beamed.
"Beibei, can we come over to your house to play?" Child A asked eagerly.
"Sure, you can!" Beibei replied.
"When are we going?" Child B pressed.
"After I finish school tonight, I'll take you all," Beibei promised.
"Great! Great!" Child C cheered.
"Beibei, will your dad welcome us?" Child D asked.
"Of course! My dad is the best!" Beibei assured them.
...
After school that evening, Beibei sat in the classroom waiting for Chen Yan to pick her up.
Liu Yuan arrived at the classroom door and called out, "Beibei."
Beibei looked up and was surprised to see her. "Mom? What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to pick you up," Liu Yuan replied with a smile.
"Where's Dad?" Beibei asked, looking around.
"Dad has something to do," Liu Yuan explained.
"What does he have to do?" Beibei pressed further.
"I don't know; he just has something to take care of," Liu Yuan said gently.
"Is he not coming to take me to see the mansion?" Beibei asked, her disappointment evident.
"He has something on his plate today. We'll go another day," Liu Yuan reassured her.
"Why didn't he call me?" Beibei questioned, her brow furrowing.
"He might be too busy and forgot," Liu Yuan suggested.
Beibei looked at her and said, "He promised me he would pick me up every evening after school."
Liu Yuan replied, "He might really have something to do."
Beibei asked, "Does he not like me anymore?"
Liu Yuan reassured her, "No way, he likes you the most."
Beibei pressed on, "Then why hasn't he come to get me?"
Liu Yuan reiterated, "I told you, he has something going on."
Beibei inquired further, "What does he have to do?"
Liu Yuan shrugged, "I don't know either. Let's go home."
Beibei shook her head, "No, I want to call Dad."
She took out her phone and dialed Chen Yan.
Meanwhile, Chen Yan was sitting on the sofa, looking at his father. "Dad, did you need something?"
Chen Sheng looked at him and asked, "Did you buy another piece of land?"
Chen Yan nodded. "Yes."
Chen Sheng questioned him further, "Why did you buy that land?"
Chen Yan replied confidently, "I want to build a resort there."
Chen Sheng raised an eyebrow. "Do you really think that place is suitable for a resort?"
Chen Yan insisted, "I believe it can work."
Chen Sheng countered, "Do you realize that area is very remote? No one goes there. If you build a resort, who will stay there?"
Chen Yan responded, "I can arrange for travel agencies to bring tourists."
Chen Sheng challenged him again, "What if the travel agencies aren't interested?"
Chen Yan assured him, "They will be; I've already talked to them."
Frustrated, Chen Sheng said, "That's not what I'm asking. I'm asking why you bought that land!"
Chen Yan repeated his earlier statement. "I already told you; I want to build a resort there."
Chen Sheng pressed on, "Do you understand our company's current situation? We are not suited for such projects!"
Chen Yan questioned back, "Why aren't we suited?"
Chen Sheng explained firmly, "Our company's main business is real estate, not vacation resorts!"
Chen Yan stood his ground. "I believe this project can work."
Chen Sheng looked at him, "Do you have any idea how much money we will lose if this project fails?"
Chen Yan met his gaze, "I know, but I believe this project will succeed."
Chen Sheng pressed on, "What makes you so sure?"
Chen Yan replied confidently, "I just know it will."
Chen Sheng's expression hardened, "You are the president of the company; you need to be responsible. You can't just act on a whim!"
"I understand," Chen Yan said. "I will take responsibility for this project."
"How will you take responsibility? If this project fails, how will you explain it to the shareholders?" Chen Sheng challenged.
"I won't let it fail," Chen Yan asserted.
"You—" Chen Sheng started but was interrupted.
Wang Min stood to the side, watching their argument unfold, unsure of what to say.
Chen Yan stood up and faced his father, "I've said all I need to say. I'm leaving."
"Stop right there!" Chen Sheng commanded.
Ignoring him, Chen Yan walked toward the door.
"You think you've grown wings and I can't control you anymore?" Chen Sheng called after him.
Chen Yan paused and turned back to his father, "That's not what I mean. I just believe this project is viable."
"You mean exactly that! You think that just because you're president, you can disregard the company's well-being!" Chen Sheng retorted.
"I don't think that," Chen Yan insisted.
"Then why did you buy that piece of land?" Chen Sheng pressed.
"I—" Chen Yan began but was cut off by a voice.
"Daddy!" Beibei's voice rang out.
Chen Yan looked up to see Beibei standing there.
Beibei looked at him with wide eyes, "Daddy, why didn't you come to pick me up?"
Chen Yan opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted again as Liu Yuan appeared behind Beibei, watching him intently.
Chen Yan froze in surprise. He hadn't expected Liu Yuan and Beibei to show up here.
Both Chen Sheng and Wang Min were equally taken aback.
They hadn't expected Liu Yuan and Beibei to show up.
Chen Yan looked at Liu Yuan and asked, "You... how did you come here?"
Liu Yuan replied, "Beibei insisted that I bring her to find you."
Chen Yan turned his gaze to Beibei, "I—"
Beibei looked at him and said, "Daddy, you promised me that you would pick me up every day after school."
Chen Yan responded, "I... I forgot."
Beibei pressed on, "Why didn't you keep your promise?"
Chen Yan admitted, "I... I was wrong."
Beibei challenged him, "What did you do wrong?"
Chen Yan sighed, "I... I was wrong in every way."
Beibei continued, "Will you break your promise again next time?"
Chen Yan assured her, "I won't."
Beibei scrutinized him, "Are you really sure you won't?"
Chen Yan nodded earnestly, "I'm really sure I won't."
Beibei then said, "Then take me to see the big mansion now."
Chen Yan hesitated, "Now?"
Beibei insisted, "Yes, right now."
Chen Yan pointed out, "It's already dark outside."
Beibei replied, "We can still see even when it's dark."
Chen Yan shook his head, "If we go now, we won't see anything."
Beibei suggested, "Then let's go see it tomorrow morning."
Chen Yan agreed, "Okay."
Beibei asked again, "Will you come tomorrow morning?"
Chen Yan confirmed, "I will."
Beibei pressed for reassurance, "You promise?"
Chen Yan replied firmly, "I promise."
