As the car reached the overpass, Liu Yuan suddenly felt dizzy from the height. Her head spun, and she felt weak all over.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Beibei asked anxiously when she noticed her mother's unusual state.
"Beibei, I'm feeling a bit carsick. I'm going to step out for some fresh air and I'll be back up in a bit," Liu Yuan said, fearing that if she stayed in the car any longer, she might throw up. She decided to get out.
"Oh, be careful then, Mom," Beibei replied obediently.
"Mm." Liu Yuan nodded lightly and opened the car door to step outside.
Leaning against the side of the vehicle, she rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on.
"Mom, are you feeling better?" Beibei asked with concern.
"Yes, much better," Liu Yuan smiled.
"That's good," Beibei sighed in relief.
---
After being stuck on the overpass for over an hour, Chen Yan found out where Liu Yuan and Beibei's car was stopped. He stepped out of the traffic and walked toward them.
"Dad!" Beibei spotted Chen Yan and waved excitedly.
"Beibei." Chen Yan quickened his pace to reach them.
"Dad, why did it take you so long to get here?" Beibei complained.
"I'm sorry, I got here late," Chen Yan apologized.
"It's okay; Mom and I don't blame you," Beibei said generously.
"Why didn't you stay in the car?" Chen Yan asked curiously.
"It was too stuffy in there, and the driver grandpa was smoking. I don't like the smell of smoke," Beibei wrinkled her nose in distaste.
"I see," Chen Yan said thoughtfully.
"Liu Yuan, why did you come over?" Liu Yuan asked in surprise.
"I saw you were stuck here, so I came to check on you," Chen Yan explained.
"Oh." Liu Yuan responded lightly.
"Dad, can you take us away from here? I don't want to stay here anymore," Beibei pleaded while tugging at Chen Yan's sleeve.
"Beibei, there's no way out here; I can't take you away," Chen Yan said helplessly.
"What do we do then?" Beibei asked gloomily.
"We wait," Chen Yan replied simply.
"Ah? We have to wait?" Beibei said with a frown.
"Beibei, Dad just asked. There was a car accident ahead, which is why we're stuck in traffic. Once the police finish handling it, we can go," Chen Yan explained.
"How much longer do we have to wait?" Beibei asked, furrowing her brows.
"It should be soon," Chen Yan guessed.
"Alright then," Beibei reluctantly agreed.
"Liu Yuan, why don't you go back? I can stay here with Beibei," Liu Yuan suggested.
"No way, how could I leave you two alone?" Chen Yan refused.
"But..."
"No buts. I'm going to talk to the driver," Chen Yan said before turning to leave.
"Mom, Dad is really great," Beibei remarked.
"Mm-hmm," Liu Yuan nodded in agreement.
---
A few minutes later, Chen Yan returned.
"How did it go?" Liu Yuan asked.
"I talked to the driver. He agreed to help us take our luggage home. Once the road is clear, he'll come back to pick us up. I gave him some extra money," Chen Yan said.
"That's good to hear," Liu Yuan replied, feeling relieved.
"Dad, why is that driver smoking in the car?" Beibei asked curiously.
"Because the driver is under a lot of stress. Smoking helps him relieve it," Chen Yan explained.
"But he could listen to music or chat," Beibei proposed.
"Not everyone likes listening to music or chatting, and everyone has different ways of relieving stress," Chen Yan patiently responded.
"Oh, I understand now," Beibei said, realization dawning on her.
"But smoking is bad for your health. If possible, it's better not to smoke at all," Chen Yan added.
"Okay, I'll remember that," Beibei said seriously.
"Alright, enough talking. Let's hurry up and go," Liu Yuan said impatiently.
"Okay," Chen Yan replied and then picked up Beibei.
Liu Yuan followed behind Chen Yan as the three of them walked down the overpass.
"Mom, are you tired?" Beibei asked, noticing her mother's pale complexion with concern.
"I'm fine, just a bit tired," Liu Yuan replied, shaking her head.
"Then let me give you a hug," Beibei said, stretching out her arms.
"Beibei, stop it. You can't carry your mom," Chen Yan said with a mix of amusement and exasperation.
"But..."
"Alright, Beibei, Mom really is fine. Let's hurry up," Liu Yuan urged.
"Okay," Beibei said, lowering her head.
---
After walking for about twenty minutes, Liu Yuan felt increasingly fatigued. Sweat began to bead on her forehead, and her breathing grew heavy.
"Yuan Yuan, what's wrong?" Chen Yan noticed Liu Yuan's unusual state and asked with concern.
"I'm... I'm a bit tired," Liu Yuan said weakly.
"Yuan Yuan, do you have a fever?" Chen Yan reached out to touch Liu Yuan's forehead, surprised by the warmth.
"I... I don't know," Liu Yuan shook her head.
"Your mom has a fever," Chen Yan confirmed.
"Huh? Mom, do you have a fever?" Beibei exclaimed in surprise.
"I... I think I feel a bit hot," Liu Yuan mumbled, dazed.
"Yuan Yuan, hang in there. I'll take you to the hospital right away," Chen Yan said anxiously.
"Okay," Liu Yuan nodded weakly.
"Dad, hurry and carry Mom to the hospital," Beibei urged.
"Alright," Chen Yan responded and then lifted Liu Yuan into his arms, striding toward the underpass of the overpass.
"Dad, hurry up!" Beibei jogged to keep up with Chen Yan.
"Beibei, don't worry. I've already called the driver; we'll be at the hospital soon," Chen Yan reassured her.
"Mm," Beibei nodded.
