Wen Lan turned her gaze toward the courtyard, a hint of determination in her eyes as she continued, "Of course it matters. The Regent holds immense power now, and the Emperor must be restless day and night, wishing to eliminate him as soon as possible. Once the Emperor's position is secure and his wings are fully grown, there will surely come a day when he confronts the Regent."
Jiang Xi smiled faintly, seemingly indifferent, quietly listening to this noble lady speculate about the situation. After a moment, she asked, "So what?"
Wen Lan's emotions seemed to intensify as she replied, "To be honest, if the Regent had been born earlier, the throne would never have gone to anyone else. He wields military power and regency authority, and many officials in the court are his trusted allies. With the support of the Wen Family, even if he were to fall out with the Emperor in the future, he could still..."
"Still what?" Jiang Xi calmly interrupted her, fixing her gaze on Wen Lan.
Wen Lan paused slightly before saying, "When the power in the Regent's hands is substantial enough, he could completely depose the Emperor."
Jiang Xi regarded Wen Lan thoughtfully and slowly remarked, "The Wen Family certainly has bold ambitions."
Wen Lan snorted coldly and replied icily, "Lady Jiang shouldn't find it strange; any flourishing noble family cannot merely focus on surface appearances while ignoring hidden crises. The Wen Family must also take precautions."
Jiang Xi continued to sip her tea nonchalantly without responding. She understood Wen Lan's implication: if the Regent were to confront the Emperor in the future, the Wen Family could side with Fong Yang. Her visit was clearly aimed at discussing some terms.
Jiang Xi couldn't help but smirk inwardly; she was curious to see what exactly Wen Lan wanted.
Feigning ignorance, she asked deliberately, "What does Wen mean?"
Wen Lan lifted her head slightly, confidence radiating from her as she spoke, "I like the Regent. Apart from him, no other young masters in this imperial city catch my eye. My request isn't high; all I ask is for the Regent to marry me, and then the Wen Family will be his strongest backing."
Jiang Xi's movements halted abruptly as surprise flickered in her heart. Such a request wasn't high? She looked at Wen Lan with a half-smile and said, "Does Wen think of herself as a golden phoenix destined for greatness? Becoming the Regent Consort would be an unparalleled honor. If the Regent truly becomes Emperor, then the Wen Family could directly produce an Empress, turning Wen Residence into a royal household with boundless glory. Such a request, and you dare say it's not high?"
Jiang Xi looked calmly at Wen Lan and continued, "When the current Emperor was young, he must have been a direct student of Taifu Wen. The Regent went to battle in his teens, and yet his relationship with this esteemed Taifu has grown distant. Could it be that Taifu Wen would rather forsake his own student to support the Regent, even at the cost of bearing the label of a traitor?"
Wen Lan's expression remained indifferent as she replied, "This is a matter concerning my grandfather. Lady Jiang need not pry; you may propose any request to me."
Jiang Xi shook her head with a faint smile, her tone resolute as she said, "I have no interest in Wen's proposal at all. I'm afraid your trip today was in vain. Please refrain from disturbing me in the future; I do not wish to interfere in matters concerning the Regent."
Upon hearing this, Wen Lan grew anxious, pointing a finger at Jiang Xi and exclaiming loudly, "You are already interfering! You occupy the position of the Regent's consort as the daughter of a merchant; don't you find that selfish? Moreover, once I become the Regent Consort, I can make you a Consort too. We could call each other sisters; why must you cling to your delusions?"
Jiang Xi paused slightly, feeling that Wen Lan might be somewhat deluded. How self-important could one be?
Talking to such a person was purely a waste of time.
She slowly rose, casting a mocking and pitying glance at Wen Lan as she said, "Since you’ve brought it up, let me tell you today that Fong Yang is mine. I will not share him with anyone."
Wen Lan abruptly stood up, her face flushed with anger as she coldly warned, "Jiang Xi, you better think this through!"
Jiang Xi remained indifferent, responding calmly, "There’s nothing to consider. After our conversation today, I understand more clearly what kind of person you are. Truly, seeing is believing; that saying holds true."
"Wen, feel free to do as you wish; I shall take my leave."
With that, Jiang Xi turned and returned to her chamber, wearing an indescribable smile on her face. She was still savoring her conversation with Wen Lan and didn’t notice Fong Yang in the room until she heard his gentle voice calling her. She snapped back to reality and playfully winked at him, smiling as she said, "Your Highness, are you done? You may not know this, but Wen is quite charming in her own way."
Fong Yang frowned slightly, his expression growing colder as a hint of displeasure flickered in his eyes. He asked, "Did Wen Lan trouble you? What did she say?"
Jiang Xi gently raised her hand to smooth Fong Yang's furrowed brow. While doing so, she said, "She said that as long as she becomes the Regent Consort, the Wen Family will stand by the prince and generously allow me to be the Consort, claiming that I am selfish for occupying the position of the lady of the manor."
Upon hearing this, Fong Yang reached out and wrapped his arm around Jiang Xi's waist, pulling her over to the low couch beside them. They both sat down, and he held her tightly in his embrace.
Jiang Xi, with her soft voice, asked, "Does the prince think I'm selfish?"
Fong Yang's heart skipped a beat, and his voice unconsciously lowered slightly as he replied, "No, I like you this way."
Suddenly, Fong Yang furrowed his brow again as if recalling something. He asked, "But don't you feel angry?"
Jiang Xi tilted her head up slightly, cupping Fong Yang's face in her hands. She gave him a gentle kiss and smiled as she said, "What is there to be angry about? I’ve told you, as long as you don’t like her and only like me, that’s enough."
Fong Yang was taken aback by her sudden display of affection, feeling a rush of emotion. He couldn't help but return her kiss with deep affection. Then he softly murmured, "I only like you."
Nestled in Fong Yang's arms, Jiang Xi extended her finger and lightly tapped the spot over his heart. With unwavering determination in her eyes, she declared, "Now and forever, this place can only hold me."
Fong Yang tightened his embrace slightly and spoke with certainty, "There will be no one else; only you, forever only you."
If Jiang Xi's awakening had surprised Fong Yang, these past two days together had filled him with constant delight. He felt enveloped by a long-lost sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.
