Shu Qingcheng leisurely glanced at the silent man and said, "What are you standing there for? Come over and help me with my eyebrows."
Yun Ting felt a bit nervous and replied, "I can't do that."
Shu Qingcheng handed him the eyebrow pencil, deliberately provoking him, "Are you afraid that I might really be taken into the palace as a consort by the Emperor, so you're stalling to keep me from going?"
Yun Ting furrowed his brows slightly and stubbornly denied, "No."
Shu Qingcheng smiled slyly, not calling him out on his stubbornness. "Then why are you still dawdling? Have you forgotten the rules I taught you before?"
Knowing that words wouldn't persuade her, Yun Ting reluctantly took the pencil and began to touch up her eyebrows. However, drawing eyebrows was an intimate act, and he couldn't help but tense up; the ambiguous atmosphere made him feel uneasy.
Yet Shu Qingcheng particularly enjoyed this subtle intimacy. If she weren't afraid of scaring him off, she would have wanted to take things further right then and there.
Suppressing that impulse, she smiled and said, "Yun Ting, once we enter the palace, Shu Yan might recognize you. Do you want to..."
Yun Ting shook his head and replied, "No need. Even if he recognizes me, so what?"
Shu Qingcheng turned to draw his eyebrows and said, "I've been looking for you for three years. You probably have no idea how I've endured these three years. But it’s okay; I know you haven’t had it easy either. Since you've decided to face Shu Yan, there's nothing to be afraid of. Just do what you need to do without worrying about me. I won’t force you into anything, but don’t act like I owe you something. Deep down, you know I don’t."
Yun Ting lowered his gaze in silence.
He had always known that Shu Qingcheng was also a victim of imperial power, yet he had been misplacing his anger onto her royal bloodline while avoiding his own feelings. He realized he owed her.
After a moment of courage, he broke free from the shackles in his heart and quietly said, "I'm sorry."
Shu Qingcheng waved her hand as she walked outside and said, "I don’t need your apology. You know what I want; think it over these days. I won’t rush you."
Yun Ting silently followed her for a while before hesitantly asking, "What about Ruir?"
Hearing him finally dare to ask made Shu Qingcheng smile a little more. "Don’t worry; he’s eating delicacies and wearing fine silks. He has a tutor teaching him; he's living a much better life than you."
Upon hearing this, Yun Ting finally felt relieved and said, "Thank you."
Shu Qingcheng turned back to look at him and said, "If you're truly grateful, show it through your actions. When Shu Yan returns, I want you to tell me the truth about what happened back then."
Yun Ting met her gaze and nodded gently.
No matter how many trials lovers go through, they will ultimately be together.
Yun Ting no longer avoided his feelings and entered the palace with Shu Qingcheng to attend the Empress Dowager's Birthday Banquet. As they stepped outside and saw two carriages, Shu Qingcheng immediately understood. She turned back to him and said, "Yun Ting, I didn't expect you to come prepared."
Yun Ting, trying to maintain his composure, lied, "The arrangements were all made by the prince."
But his nervousness and the blush creeping onto his cheeks betrayed him. Shu Qingcheng chose not to expose his prideful facade, feeling a sweetness in her heart as he helped her into the carriage.
Jiang Xi smirked with interest and said, "They're here; we can set off now. Master Yun seems to be in a good mood. I wonder what their dynamic is like when they're together."
Fong Yang felt a bit downcast, lowering his gaze as he noticed his wife constantly watching others. Jealousy bubbled within him as he remarked, "You seem very interested in their affairs."
Jiang Xi didn't think too deeply about it. She turned back with a light smile and replied, "Don't you know that women are naturally curious about others' romantic experiences?"
Fong Yang leaned closer to her, jealousy intensifying as he asked, "Are you more interested in their romantic experiences than in mine?"
Realizing her husband's jealousy had flared up again, Jiang Xi quickly soothed him, saying, "It's not the same thing. But if I had to say it, I’m still most interested in my own husband." Fong Yang fell silent but couldn't help smiling at Jiang Xi; his crescent-shaped eyes seemed ready to drown in her affection.
Unable to suppress her laughter, Jiang Xi said, "My husband is so domineering and jealous; what should I do? Generally speaking, if a husband misbehaves, a good beating will suffice—one beating won't work, then two. But alas, I'm too weak to overpower my husband."
Her words completely amused Fong Yang. He wrapped his arms around her and softly said, "I won’t resist; you can hit me however you like. I belong to you; only you have the right to deal with me." Jiang Xi felt her heart flutter at his teasing and replied, "I wouldn’t dare! If anyone touches a hair on my husband’s head, I’ll make them pay!"
Fong Yang joyfully tightened his embrace and said, "No need for you to intervene. They can't harm me."
Jiang Xi sincerely remarked, "To have such a husband is my fortune." Then they shared another long and sweet kiss.
The carriage soon stopped outside the palace gates. Shu Qingcheng got out and put on her veil again while pondering: It’s strange; why haven’t the Regent and the princess come down yet? They really are quite affectionate.
She approached and gently knocked on the carriage wall, saying, "Prince, Princess, you haven't fallen asleep, have you?"
At that moment, a cold voice came from behind her: "Who are you? What are you doing in front of the Regent's carriage?"
Shu Qingcheng turned around to see an elegantly dressed and haughty woman. Without a doubt, she was another Royal Relative.
Fong Yang helped Jiang Xi out of the car, and as Jiang Xi lifted her gaze, she saw the Eldest Princess. With a faint smile, she said, "Eldest Princess, it's been a while."
Shu Qingcheng immediately understood; no wonder the Eldest Princess was acting so high and mighty, offering only a symbolic greeting. Upon seeing Fong Yang, the Eldest Princess's demeanor shifted, and she lowered her eyes to bow, saying, "I have seen the Little Prince."
Fong Yang coldly reprimanded her in front of everyone, "Have you forgotten something?"
The Eldest Princess held herself in high regard and was reluctant in her heart, thinking to herself: How dare this palace bow to a merchant woman?
However, when she looked up and saw Fong Yang's deep-set eyes filled with frost, she felt a chill run down her spine. Suppressing her embarrassment and anger, she forced herself to lower her head and say, "I have seen the Little Imperial Aunt."
Jiang Xi observed the unwilling yet compelled submission of the Eldest Princess and smiled as she said, "Eldest Princess, no need for such formalities. Speaking of which, I haven't seen Jiajia for some time. Has he arrived?"
Princess Da Zhou had always prided herself on her nobility and looked down on the merchant woman Jiang Xi. But what could she do? Under the pressure of Regent Fong Yang, she obediently bowed to Jiang Xi and replied, "Jiajia has entered the palace; he should be sitting with the Empress Dowager by now."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Xi chose not to say more and turned to enter with Shu Qingcheng.
Even considering Huai'an Princess's perspective, she wouldn't make things too awkward with the Eldest Princess. Shu Qingcheng smiled slightly and cast a glance at the Eldest Princess, who conveniently ignored the question she had just asked.
The Eldest Princess felt provoked, her face darkening like a pot bottom as she thought: Just wait; you'll all pay for this.
