I pointed at the circle of Copper Rings on the White-Bearded Monk's arm. "Ajahn, I need you to throw these Copper Rings at the same time. When they hit the ground, the Human Pupa will notice the sound and chase after them. That's the best moment for me to rush over and open the wooden box!"
The White-Bearded Monk remained silent, his gaze fixed on the Copper Rings adorning his arm.
I grew anxious. "Ajahn! There's no time left!"
"There are only six," he said softly.
"What do you mean, only six?" I realized that despite his profound virtue, his adaptability was lacking.
"I mean there are only six Copper Rings in my hand." The White-Bearded Monk had already removed the Copper Rings, stacking them in his palm and rubbing them together. "There’s nothing heavier on us that can make a noise to attract attention when it falls. Unless..."
He hesitated for a moment, but I understood what he intended to do!
"Ajahn! You can't do this!" I looked at his leg, which had been replaced with a wooden stick after our last battle. "I still don’t know what to do once I open the box!"
"You don’t need to do anything; just open it!" The White-Bearded Monk finished speaking and hurled the six Copper Rings in different directions, sending them crashing against the walls with a clatter.
The Human Pupa, drawn by the sound of the falling Copper Rings, crawled towards them like a hungry wolf, its limbs moving swiftly. The smallest Human Pupa dragged a umbilical cord behind it.
"Go now!" the White-Bearded Monk shouted. Before I could say anything more, he prepared to run in the opposite direction to draw the Human Pupa's attention.
"Ajahn! I'm coming!" A figure shouted as they charged past us, deliberately stomping heavily with each step to attract all the Human Pupa's focus away from us.
Mangrai!
He is not dead yet!
He used the last moment of his life to buy me time.
What kind of faith is this! What belief allows him to sacrifice himself without hesitation after being exiled for so many years!
I felt a pang in my nose, my blood surged, and without thinking further, I dashed toward the Tathagata Statue. I knew that if I could open the wooden box before the Human Pupa caught Mangrai, everything would take a turn for the better!
This short distance of ten meters might only take a second or two! But those seconds felt as long as a thousand years. My hand reached straight out, striving to touch the wooden box at the earliest moment!
I had no time to consider the situation of Mangrai and the White-Bearded Monk. At this moment—focus was the greatest help I could offer them!
Five meters, four meters, three meters, two meters, one meter!
My fingertips finally brushed against the wooden box; the ancient texture transmitted through my hand and into my wildly beating heart!
I finally got hold of that box!
As I clutched it to my chest, a heavy feeling settled in my heart!
The box had no lid; it was completely seamless, with no visible gaps or openings!
I was about to smash it on the ground to shatter it (so that the Crystal Buddha and Relic inside would spill out, allowing the Human Pupa to find them, achieving two goals at once), but I realized my hand had become fused with the box. It felt strange, as if the box were part of my hand; I couldn't shake it off.
Just when I didn't know what to do, a faint rainbow-colored glow suddenly illuminated the edge of the box. With a loud "bang," the box popped open on its own, and a strong white light burst forth from within, bright yet not blinding, instantly enveloping the tower in this ethereal white glow.
Deep within the white light, there was a ten-centimeter tall Crystal Buddha radiating a soft green light, perfectly placed in the center of the box. I noticed that its small right hand seemed to be embedded with a piece of white material, which looked out of place compared to the entire Crystal Buddha.
A cluster of emerald green light points flowed from within the Crystal Buddha, growing brighter and brighter until it settled on the white piece on its right hand, condensing into a bright spot the size of a soybean, exceptionally luminous. That bright spot began to shrink tightly towards its core, trembling slightly before suddenly bursting open. Translucent green light blossomed from the wooden box, and I felt as if I had fallen into an ocean, surrounded by a sea of green.
In this emerald haze, I distinctly felt the light penetrating my palm. Upon closer inspection, I realized my hands had transformed into two skeletal frames. Soon after, every part of my body that the green light passed through became devoid of flesh and turned into a skeleton.
Startled, I loosened my grip, causing the wooden box to fall to the ground. The Crystal Buddha rose from the box and floated into the air, slowly making its way toward the center of the tower.
I tilted my head back, my gaze fixed on the Crystal Buddha, feeling an unusual calmness within me. It seemed as though it was speaking to me or smiling at me until it paused in mid-air and scattered green light across every corner of the tower.
I stood there lost in time and worries. After an unknown duration, I suddenly realized the dire situation and quickly glanced at the White-Bearded Monk and Mangrai.
"Ah!" I couldn't help but exclaim when I saw what was happening inside the tower!
Where the White-Bearded Monk stood, there was clearly a skeletal frame upright; its left femur was broken halfway down with a wooden stick below it. About four or five steps behind him stood a group of skeletons in various poses as if they were lunging forward. Among them, two skeletons held hands tightly as they charged toward a central human skeleton. Countless strands of green light entwined these skeletons like vines, freezing this terrifying scene in place.
I looked at myself; my clothes and body had vanished without me noticing, leaving only stark white bones illuminated in a jade green hue…
"Fifty years ago, I experienced this firsthand. The flesh is merely an outer shell; only bones are fundamental to humanity," said the White-Bearded Monk as his skeletal jaw clacked together. "Thank you for ensuring the safety of Buddha's Relics for another fifty years. However, something even more terrifying is about to happen; be prepared."
As soon as he finished speaking, I witnessed what he referred to as something even more horrifying!
