“Isn't that impossible? We’re supposed to clean up!” Wen Kai protested loudly, trying to incite Wu Yi and Li Hang. “You don’t think this could be…?” Since Xiao Qiang's punch, he seemed somewhat hesitant to utter the words 'freak.' Stammering and making faces, he hinted at his friends to voice their objections.
Lin Yu sternly reprimanded, “Time is tight; stop dragging your feet and talking like that. Wen Kai, what do you want to say? Be direct.” As she spoke, she glanced at Wu Yi and Li Hang, who appeared calm, likely due to Wen Kai’s earlier remarks. They pretended nothing was wrong, looking around aimlessly.
“We're cleaning up; what are you two doing, getting cozy…”
“Shut up,” Lin Yu interrupted sharply, knowing this guy well enough that he wouldn’t say anything decent. She firmly cut him off.
“How about we switch?” Xiao Qiang suddenly suggested.
Wen Kai shrugged, sounding unsure as he asked, “Switch what?”
“You go move that skeleton off the chair, find out how it died, and then burn it.”
Wen Kai was speechless for a moment before finally saying, “Then I’ll just go clean up.” He called the other two to prepare cleaning supplies.
While Lin Yu and Wen Kai were talking, Xiao Qiang tried several times to contact headquarters using his watch's calling mode but had no luck. Finally, he gave up and rolled up his sleeves, seeing their reluctant expressions as he entered the room…
“Have you sorted it out?”
Lin Yu didn’t respond verbally but gave an OK gesture. The two began preparing to investigate the skeleton.
Girls are delicate; as soon as Lin Yu entered the inner room, she felt a wave of nausea wash over her.
Seeing this, Xiao Qiang immediately lifted the innermost part of his shirt and tore off a corner with a loud rip. “Here.”
“What for?”
“To use as a mask.”
“Uh,” Lin Yu took the torn piece of fabric, frowned as she brought it to her nose for a sniff. Internally she thought: Hmm, no foul smell. She then tied it over her mouth.
The noise from Wen Kai and the others cleaning had no effect on Xiao Qiang and Lin Yu’s focus as they investigated the cause of death of the skeleton. From the gaping mouth of the deceased, it was clear that they had experienced an unimaginable fear before dying.
Under Xiao Qiang's direction, Lin Yu pinched her nose with one hand while picking up some scraps of paper from the ground with the other. Her fingers formed a V shape as they stuck to the decaying fabric that was almost falling apart, revealing a stark white skeletal frame beneath…
As Lin Yu lifted the clothing, he let out a terrified scream, hastily discarding the scraps of paper. His face turned pale as he stumbled back in panic.
When the clothing fell back into place, Xiao Qiang had already seen the large maggot writhing inside the skeleton, feasting on the remnants of marrow clinging to the bones.
"Don't worry, it's okay... Don't be afraid," he reassured Lin Yu while using a stick he had found elsewhere to try and pry the maggot out.
But no matter how hard Xiao Qiang tried, the maggot seemed to be firmly rooted to the skeleton, as if it had been living there for ages after consuming all the organs in its hollow belly.
Lin Yu's scream attracted Wen Kai, Wu Yi, and Li Hang, who rushed in to see what was happening. They arrived just in time to witness Xiao Qiang struggling with the maggot.
Wen Kai looked at the writhing mass of flesh and the somewhat clumsy maggot with immediate interest, impulsively thinking about keeping it as a pet. "Hey, why didn't you save this for me?" he exclaimed, trying to push Xiao Qiang aside to get a closer look.
"Don't get too close," Lin Yu warned, blocking both Wu Yi and Li Hang from approaching as well.
"Why not?" Wen Kai's gaze remained fixed on the creature, and a devious idea began to form in his mind.
Xiao Qiang said seriously, "If I tell you the story of this maggot, you won't be twisted enough to like it."
Wen Kai shot him a disdainful glance but seemed to begrudgingly accept his words.
Just as Xiao Qiang opened his mouth to share the story of the maggot, the skeleton suddenly shook violently, leading to an unimaginable horror.
The maggot that had stubbornly refused to budge from its spot leaped out of the skeleton and latched onto a startled Wen Kai.
"Get it off me! Get it off!" Wen Kai screamed as he tumbled backward, taking the maggot down with him.
The other four panicked. Xiao Qiang grabbed his stick and began jabbing at the creature—each poke producing soft popping sounds as the stick pierced through its skin, releasing a milky fluid.
"Gross! This is disgusting!" Wen Kai shouted, flailing about until he finally managed to push the deflated maggot off him. The stench that lingered made him gag.
Two of his stunned friends finally snapped out of their shock and rushed over to help him up. Seemingly furious at their lack of assistance during his ordeal, he cursed loudly, "Damn it! I almost died! Are you guys idiots?"
Lin Yu spoke calmly, "Alright, it's fine now. Let's get you cleaned up." She then turned to Xiao Qiang and asked, "Is there any chance that thing could harm Wen Kai?" Her implication was clear: could the maggot pose any danger to his health?
"I think he should just take off his clothes all at once..." Xiao Qiang suggested, a hint of concern hidden in his brows.
"Damn, I only have this one outfit. If I take it off, what am I supposed to wear, yours?" Wen Kai replied, somewhat oblivious. With a few quick motions, he tore off his dirty, smelly clothes right in front of Lin Yu and began tugging at Xiao Qiang's shirt.
Xiao Qiang shouted angrily, "What are you doing?" He forcefully shook him off, stepping back to pick up the skin of the bug that had drained a clear white liquid and yelled to Wu Yi and Li Hang, "Get this out of here and burn it along with the skeleton."
The two exchanged glances, too lazy to respond. They took off their outer garments in a show of camaraderie and handed one to Wen Kai.
Xiao Qiang and Lin Yu worked together to move the skeleton and the bug's skin to a wider area outside. Using a laser pointer, they ignited a pile of paper scraps they had gathered to burn the skeleton.
As they ventured deeper inside, it became evident that the space within was much more spacious than outside. From the outside, these white structures looked like prefabricated houses, but stepping inside revealed a completely different reality.
What puzzled Xiao Qiang was that they seemed to be inside a spaceship; it didn't resemble any terrestrial building at all. In the heart of this space was a large control panel surrounded by monitors. As they stepped in, the monitors suddenly activated, and a polite simulated female voice welcomed them: "Hello, welcome to the DBL6 experimental base."
"Wow... this is amazing!" Wen Kai exclaimed excitedly.
The simulated voice inquired: "Do you need assistance?"
