Ziya was seventeen years old, standing at 1.62 meters tall, and as for her looks, well, you know. She had been the school beauty for three consecutive years and was once again designated as the beauty of her junior class this year. Her grades? Just take a look at the comments from her tutor to understand. As for whether she had admirers, that's a secret... but I will quietly tell you that sometimes she gazes into the distance, a hint of melancholy flickering in her eyes. Perhaps deep down, she has not forgotten the person she once loved and who hurt her... This is why many suitors could only sigh in despair. Her flaws included an excessive pursuit of perfection, stubbornness in trivial matters, and being petty and sensitive... And there’s one more thing... but never mind, you can continue reading!
Ziya was majoring in the Journalism Department, taking a myriad of complex subjects such as College Chinese, Introduction to Law, Selections of Modern Chinese Literature, Introduction to Journalism, History of Chinese Journalism, News Reporting and Writing, Newspaper Editing, Broadcast and Television News, News Psychology, Advertising Studies, Basics of Computer Applications, and Moral Cultivation and Legal Foundations.
“Ziya, today you will be interning at the Daily News Building. You can pair up with a classmate; feel free to choose whoever you like,” her tutor said with a warm smile as she approached.
“Um! Can I go alone?”
“It’s better to have someone with you for support! Let me assign someone to accompany you; he will come find you,” her tutor said lovingly as she looked at her proud student. She believed that Ziya's internship would surely be a great success.
“Okay, goodbye, tutor.”
“Hey! Beautiful, need a ride?” A young man driving the campus shuttle bus greeted her with a cheeky smile as he approached Ziya, who was holding the newspapers and all relevant materials about the Daily News Building provided by her tutor.
Nodding slightly, she embraced her books and hopped onto the bus.
“This time regarding the mysterious deaths of two security guards at the Daily News Building, the building's management has not provided any clear explanation for what caused the two male guards to die during their night shift. Strangely enough, the entire building experienced a power outage that night; how could the elevator have opened? This was what Ziya overheard her classmates discussing about yesterday's front-page headline news on the Daily News Building. It was almost a vivid irony; usually it was the Daily News Building shining light on others, but now it was under scrutiny itself.
“Did you graduate in 1999?”
“Um?” Ziya was lost in thought when she suddenly heard the driver’s question. Looking around the bus, she realized she was the only passenger.
“Yes. How did you know?”
"Of course I know, just look at who I am," the man said as he turned his head.
"You... Zhou Chen... ah..."
"Ziya, what's wrong? Why are you shouting?"
"Uh! I... had a nightmare." Ziya awkwardly glanced at the car filled with seniors, feeling so embarrassed that she wished she could sink into the ground. Just sitting there for a while made her drowsy, and she felt dizzy!
"It seems like you're not feeling well, which is why you're having nightmares. You should try taking some vitamins," the handsome and refined senior suggested with a smile, revealing a set of pearly white teeth.
"What good does Vitamin B6 do?" Ziya replied gratefully to the senior, managing a smile. The dimples at the corners of her mouth were filled with a strong sense of intoxication, causing the senior sitting next to her to pause in surprise.
"The benefits are numerous; it helps produce antibodies, regulates the central nervous system, and maintains skin health. Foods rich in it include malt, yeast, tomatoes, bananas, peanuts, and sunflower seeds."
"Lack of B6 can lead to anemia, weight loss, stomach pain, vomiting, depression, nervousness, and numbness or pain in the limbs."
"Uh! With so many benefits, I haven't tried it before; we have some at home. It's just that I don't like these health supplements; I'm afraid if I take them... Besides, I..." Ziya murmured softly, her slightly pale face flushing with two rosy clouds. She thought to herself: How does he know I have anemia? Is he studying medicine or something? At this thought, she inadvertently glanced at him again.
He continued to smile lightly and said, "You're afraid of gaining weight, right?"
At that moment, Ziya felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment. She turned her head away in silence to look ahead. Who is this guy? So narcissistic! He actually sees through all my thoughts. With that in mind, she deliberately ignored him and began to observe the school environment. This university was quite spacious, comparable to the size of a residential community. Generally, if students had something to do or needed transportation, there were motorcycles available for pick-up; however, this would be deducted from their monthly tuition fees.
"Hey! Classmate, can I have your phone number?" Just as Ziya was about to get out of the car, she froze for a moment and felt a wave of annoyance wash over her. She thought to herself: Why are boys always like this? Asking for phone numbers out of nowhere.
"I'm sorry, my... phone is out of service." Ziya, who had never lied before, felt a flush of heat burning her cheeks, unsure just how red her face had turned.
"Uh! It's fine, you don't have to make such a lame excuse if you don't want to. You're Ziya, right? I'm Qin Nannan. Let's chat more when we have the chance." The senior didn't seem bothered by Ziya's evasiveness; instead, he happily introduced himself and snapped his fingers before heading off to the boys' dormitory.
Upon arriving at the dorm, Ziya's best friend, Sun Meng, shouted, "Ziya, you're back! What about the paper you helped me with last night?"
"I finished it last night and put it under your bed! I even told you that. And now you're asking me for it again? I'm so busy," Ziya replied as she placed the document bag from the Daily News Building down and began rummaging for Sun Meng's paper while mumbling.
It was easy to guess that Sun Meng was Ziya's childhood friend. Due to family issues, Ziya had transferred schools and couldn't spend her high school years with Sun Meng. However, by coincidence, they ended up at the same university. Although they were studying different majors, they could still look out for each other.
Speaking of Sun Meng, she was a girl with a clever appearance but a scatterbrained mind. She often mislaid things and was quite clumsy despite studying nursing. Ziya found herself at a loss with her friend’s antics and could only sigh in exasperation.
"Wow, you really agreed to intern at the Daily News Building? I heard it's creepy there; you might want to reconsider," Sun Meng exclaimed dramatically while holding the document bag.
"Who am I afraid of? I haven't heard anything creepy about it. Besides, with your special talent for seeing things, what do I have to worry about?" Ziya said this confidently, but deep down she felt uneasy—what did that nightmare really signify?
"Shh! Didn't you tell me not to share this secret with anyone? How could you let it slip?" Sun Meng glanced around nervously and stuck out her tongue. Luckily, it was just the two of them in the dorm; a hint of worry crossed her brow.
Ziya smiled knowingly; this was one of the things she liked about Sun Meng—her loyalty and boyish personality. She remembered their high school days together and all the stories they shared, including that pivotal moment when everything fell onto him...
