The old man was so furious that he almost charged at them, but the police held him back.
"Why?"
"Why do they get to do wrong and not face any punishment?"
Ma Yuan remained silent, his gaze icy as he looked at the group.
The few people under his stare felt a chill run down their spines.
"What are you staring at? Never seen a handsome guy before?"
"Keep looking and I'll poke your eyes out."
Ma Yuan chuckled softly, "In my years as a police officer, I've caught countless thieves, robbers, and rapists."
"But it's the first time I've seen scum like you who deserve nothing less than death."
"You better pray you don't fall into my hands."
The group exchanged glances, a flicker of disdain crossing their faces.
"You poor cop, what can you do to me?"
"Go ahead, try to arrest me!"
"Come on, let's hurt each other!"
The smile on Ma Yuan's face deepened. "That day will come."
On the way home, the old couple didn't say a word.
They couldn't understand why the bad guys faced no consequences.
They couldn't fathom why there was so much injustice in the world.
All they wanted was to seek justice for their granddaughter; was that too much to ask?
Since that day, their house had been vandalized—windows shattered, red paint splashed at their doorstep, and they frequently received threatening phone calls.
"Old man, drop the lawsuit or I'll make you wish you hadn't."
The old man broke down in tears.
Yu Fenglin's death sent shockwaves throughout the city.
His head had been severed and wrapped in a black plastic bag, discarded at the entrance of the police station. It was almost immediately clear that it was an act of revenge. The most likely target for this vengeance was Old Master Yu at the end of the alley. On the day Yu Fenglin died, I was the only person who had interacted with the old man. Therefore, the police came looking for me.
In front of Ma Yuan and his team, I looked bewildered. "Officer, you suspect that I killed Yu Fenglin?"
Ma Yuan and his colleagues were quite polite. After all, there was no evidence against me. "This is just a routine inquiry; we ask for your cooperation."
I nodded and calmly answered all their questions. I even pulled up the surveillance footage from my shop and played it for them. "Officer, did you see? During the time Yu Fenglin died, I was in the flower shop."
They left quickly after that. I couldn't shake the feeling that Ma Yuan glanced back at me as he was leaving, as if he sensed something. He said, "Miss Lin, if you remember anything that might be related to the case, please be sure to let us know."
I nodded in agreement. "Of course."
Yu Fenglin's death infuriated the Yu Family. Madam Yu stormed into the police station, shouting angrily, "If you can't find the murderer, I'll make sure each of you loses your job!"
"You useless bunch! You take our tax money but are of no help when it matters!"
"My son is dead; none of you will have it easy!"
The officers stood there, drenched in her scorn, unable to respond. Meanwhile, I comforted the agitated old man. Dou Min and Li Qiang were Yu Fenglin's closest friends.
After seeing Yu Fenglin's body, the two of them developed slight mental disorders. They cried and begged their parents to ensure that those responsible would pay the price.
Ma Yuan came to chat with me, sporting two large dark circles under his eyes. "Everyone says I can't solve the case, but they don't know how hard I've been trying."
"Those aristocratic families are putting pressure on me every day; I can barely hold on."
"To be honest, I had already found some clues, but unfortunately..."
I poured him a cup of hot tea. "Officer Ma, have a cup of tea to refresh yourself."
"Thank you."
"Officer Ma, have you ever thought about why those people are so reckless?"
