Ma Yuan's expression darkened. "They..."
He paused. "The forces behind them are too powerful; I am powerless."
"Do you trust me?"
I tilted my head, looking at him in confusion. "Why would you ask that, Officer Ma?"
Ma Yuan gazed into my clear eyes, feeling a bit guilty. He averted his gaze and cleared his throat.
"I just think that Miss Lin might know something."
I chuckled softly. "I don't know anything at all."
Ma Yuan continued to look at me, and in my eyes, he saw disappointment, helplessness, and pain. He rubbed the teacup in his hands. "Really, you don't know anything?"
I shook my head.
Ma Yuan lowered his head in thought for a moment before standing up to take his leave. I walked him to the door and watched as he got into his car and drove away.
I stood there until the vehicle disappeared from sight before turning back to the flower shop. I looked at the cup that Ma Yuan had just used, a smile creeping onto my lips.
It was a mix of pleasure, like watching prey struggle, and pity, akin to hearing a child cry.
How pitiful. So much effort, yet in the end, they still have to lose.
Not long after Yu Fenglin's death, Dou Min went mad. He ran naked through the streets, shouting, "I didn't mean it! I didn't mean to kill you!"
"Please let me go! Let me go!"
Passersby stared at his deranged state, pointing and whispering among themselves.
"Isn't that the Dou Family Young Master? I heard he killed someone a few days ago."
"Yes, I heard about it too. Those rich kids abused a six-year-old to death."
"Truly, they're worse than animals."
"People like that deserve to die."
"They're getting their comeuppance now."
"They had it coming!"
The Dou Family rushed out upon hearing the news, quickly pulling Dou Min into the car and hurrying to the psychiatric hospital.
However, after they left, a dark figure emerged from the shadows.
He looked up at the sky and murmured, "The time is almost here."
Dou Min had gone mad, and Li Qiang was not far behind.
He spent every day cooped up in his room, afraid to go outside, even unable to face his own family.
Father Li, in a drunken stupor, accidentally revealed what had happened years ago.
Upon learning the truth, Li Qiang spiraled into madness.
He clutched his head and screamed in agony.
"Why?"
"Why did you do this to me?"
"What did I do wrong?"
"Why did you treat me like this?"
Mother Li held her son tightly, heartbroken. "Mom was wrong; it's my fault."
Li Qiang suddenly lifted his head. "It was those people who harmed me. I want to kill them."
Father Li grabbed him firmly. "Calm down."
Mother Li cried out, "Son, listen to your mother; you can't go now."
"They're looking for you; you can't go outside."
Li Qiang struggled desperately. "Let me go! Let me go!"
"I want to kill them."
"I want them to pay the price."
Father Li and Mother Li exchanged a glance and sighed helplessly.
They brought in some rope and tied Li Qiang to the chair.
"Son, we're sorry. It's our fault."
"But now, you must endure for a while."
Li Qiang struggled, cried, and made a scene.
But he couldn't break free from his restraints.
He watched helplessly as those people stepped closer to him, reaching out to grab him.
His eyes widened in terror. "What are you going to do?"
Those people sneered, "What do you think?"
As the sun set, Ma Yuan arrived.
He looked terrible, his eyes red like a starving wolf cub, staring intensely at me.
I knew this was because Dou Min and Li Qiang were both dead.
Their bodies had been found in an abandoned hospital on the outskirts of town.
