Liya glanced around warily. "Follow me," she whispered. "It's not safe here."
Li Lin nodded and followed closely behind her, holding Xing'er tightly in his arms as they carefully navigated through the shadows of the abandoned factory.
They arrived at a concealed dark door. Liya skillfully entered a code and pushed the door open. "Hurry inside."
As Li Lin stepped through the door, he was met with a sudden brightness; a secret base unfolded before him, its walls adorned with various advanced equipment and monitoring screens.
"What is this...?" Li Lin exclaimed, astonished as he surveyed the surroundings.
"This is the secret base of the Wasteland Watchers," Liya said, closing the door and turning to face him. "Now we can talk properly."
Li Lin set Xing'er down, and the little one curiously examined the environment. "So what exactly is the Wasteland Watchers?"
Liya took a deep breath. "We are a group dedicated to protecting and researching the remnants of technology in the wasteland." She pointed at the equipment on the wall. "All of this was salvaged from the ruins."
Li Lin frowned. "What is your goal?"
"To rebuild civilization," Liya replied, a glint of determination in her eyes. "And Starwing Beast is the key."
Li Lin looked down at Xing'er. "Is it really that important?"
Liya nodded. "Starwing Beast is the most advanced biotechnological product from before the Nuclear War. They possess the power to change the wasteland."
Li Lin felt a jolt in his heart as he recalled Xing'er's extraordinary abilities, suddenly overwhelmed by a heavy sense of responsibility.
"But because of that," Liya continued, "they have also become targets coveted by the Raiders Group."
Li Lin furrowed his brows. "Raiders Group."
"A bunch of crazy tech fanatics," Liya gritted her teeth. "They want to use the power of the Starwing Beast to dominate the wasteland."
Li Lin fell silent for a moment, suddenly recalling something. "Wait, how do you know I'm not one of the raiders?"
Liya revealed a mysterious smile. "The Starwing Beast chose you; that's the best proof."
Li Lin looked down at Xing'er, the little creature gazing up at him with bright eyes, and a strong sense of protectiveness surged within him.
"What should I do?" Li Lin asked, raising his head.
Just as Liya was about to respond, an alarm blared loudly. She quickly ran to the monitor screen, her expression changing drastically. "Oh no, the raiders are here!"
Li Lin immediately tensed up. "How many are there?"
"At least one squad," Liya said as she swiftly checked her weapons. "We need to evacuate immediately."
At that moment, Li Lin suddenly froze as a painful memory washed over him like a tide.
It was a scene from the battlefield where he and his comrades were surrounded by enemy forces, running out of ammunition, and ultimately, he was the only one who survived.
"Li Lin! Li Lin!" Liya's calls pulled him back to reality.
Li Lin snapped back to attention, cold sweat soaking his back. He looked at Liya. "I'm sorry, I..."
Liya seemed to understand something and gently patted his shoulder. "It's okay, we just need to focus on what's in front of us."
Li Lin took a deep breath, trying to suppress the fear rising within him. "You're right, let's go."
Just as they were about to leave, Xing'er suddenly let out a sharp cry, its body radiating a blinding blue light.
"What’s happening?" Li Lin asked in surprise.
Liya's eyes widened. "It's warning us of danger! Get down!"
As soon as she finished speaking, a deafening explosion shook the entire base, causing dust and debris to rain down.
Li Lin shielded Xing'er and rolled to the side. He looked up at Liya. "What do we do now?"
Liya gritted her teeth. "We have to break through. The raiders are after the Starwing Beast; we can't let them succeed."
Li Lin nodded. "Alright, we'll go together."
The two quickly gathered their essential gear, with Li Lin carefully hiding Xing'er in his arms.
Liya opened a concealed escape route. "This path will take us away, but be careful; it may have already been discovered."
Li Lin took a deep breath. "No matter how dangerous it is, we have to try."
Just as the two were about to enter the passage, Liya suddenly turned around and looked at Li Lin seriously. "There's something you need to know."
Li Lin was taken aback. "What is it?"
Liya hesitated for a moment. "There's a bigger conspiracy behind the Raiders Group."
"What conspiracy?" Li Lin pressed.
Another explosion interrupted their conversation. Liya gritted her teeth. "There's no time to explain now; we have to hurry."
Li Lin nodded and followed Liya's lead as they quickly entered the concealed passage, the angry shouts and gunfire of the raiders echoing behind them.
In the dark passage, Li Lin held Xing'er tightly, his heart racing. He didn't know what awaited them, but he knew he had no choice.
They had to escape, had to protect Xing'er, and had to uncover the hidden truth.
At the end of the passage, a faint light flickered in and out of view. Li Lin and Liya quickened their pace, rushing toward an unknown fate.
