The explosion echoed deafeningly, and Li Lin instinctively shielded Xing'er in his arms, rolling to avoid the falling debris.
"Quick, follow me!" Liya shouted, sprinting towards a secret passage.
Li Lin followed closely behind, his heart pounding like a drum. The earlier conversation still echoed in his mind, but at this moment, life and death were at stake, leaving no room for hesitation.
The passage was dimly lit, and rumbling sounds reverberated beneath their feet, as if the entire underground base could collapse at any moment. Li Lin held Xing'er tightly, feeling the little one's rapid breaths.
"Be careful!" Liya suddenly stopped and grabbed Li Lin.
The ceiling ahead collapsed with a thunderous roar, sending dust swirling around them.
Li Lin coughed and squinted through the haze, spotting several armed raiders emerging from the rubble.
"Damn it, we're surrounded!" Liya cursed, quickly drawing her pistol from her waist.
Li Lin held his breath, shielding Xing'er behind him. His gaze swept around, searching for a possible escape route.
"Hand over the Starwing Beast, and we can spare your lives," one of the raiders said coldly, wearing a gas mask.
Liya scoffed. "In your dreams!"
Gunfire erupted suddenly as both sides opened fire simultaneously. Bullets ricocheted through the narrow passage, sparks flying everywhere.
Li Lin instinctively crouched down, using his body to protect Xing'er. A wave of dizziness washed over him as the sounds of gunfire and shouts intertwined, pulling him back to that nightmarish battlefield.
"Li Lin, wake up!" Liya's shout pulled him back to reality. "We need to break through!"
Li Lin gritted his teeth, forcing himself to concentrate. He glanced around and suddenly noticed a crack in the wall.
"There!" he pointed at the crack. "Maybe we can blast our way through!"
Liya understood immediately and quickly pulled a grenade from her backpack. "Cover me!"
Li Lin took a deep breath, grabbed some rubble from the ground, and hurled it at the raiders with all his might.
The raiders were caught off guard, retreating in confusion.
Seizing the opportunity, Liya pulled the pin from the grenade and threw it at the wall.
"Get down!"
With a deafening explosion, the wall collapsed, revealing an opening.
"Go!"
Li Lin scooped up Xing'er and followed Liya through the gap. Behind them, they could hear the raiders' furious shouts and a barrage of gunfire.
The two struggled through the rubble, dodging bullets that whizzed past them.
Li Lin felt a sharp pain in his chest and looked down to see blood soaking through his shirt.
"You’re hurt!" Liya exclaimed.
Li Lin gritted his teeth. "It's nothing, keep running!"
They stumbled through the abandoned streets, pursued relentlessly by the raiders.
Suddenly, Xing'er let out a sharp cry, radiating a dazzling blue light.
A wave of energy spread from the little creature, knocking the pursuing raiders to the ground.
Li Lin looked at Xing'er in surprise; the little one seemed frightened by its own power, trembling uncontrollably.
"That's amazing!" Liya exclaimed. "Quick, let's escape while we can!"
The two quickened their pace and soon shook off their pursuers.
However, when they stopped to catch their breath, Li Lin suddenly felt a wave of dizziness wash over him.
"Something's not right..." he said with difficulty. "This place... radiation..."
Liya's expression changed dramatically. "Oh no, we've entered a high Radiation Zone!"
Li Lin struggled to steady himself as he looked around. The abandoned buildings were covered in radiation warning signs, and a strange smell lingered in the air.
"We need to get out of here fast," Liya said anxiously. "Otherwise, it could be life-threatening."
At that moment, Li Lin inadvertently caught sight of Liya's exposed arm. A strange tattoo flickered on her skin.
That pattern... why does it look so familiar?
Li Lin frowned, trying hard to remember. Suddenly, a thought flashed through his mind.
It was not a tattoo, but a mark. A mysterious symbol he had seen in the Military Files.
Before he could finish speaking, a sudden gunshot echoed from afar.
"Damn it, they're closing in!" Liya cursed.
Li Lin gritted his teeth against the discomfort in his body and held Xing'er tightly. "We have to keep running."
The two of them set off on the path of escape once more, pursued relentlessly by the marauders, with the unknown Radiation Zone ahead of them.
Li Lin's mind raced as puzzles began to surface in his thoughts.
What was Liya's true identity?
What secrets lay hidden behind the Wasteland Watchers?
And what roles would he and Xing'er play in this conspiracy?
With a heart full of questions, Li Lin clenched his jaw and ran toward the unknown.
Survival was the most important task at hand.
