The silence in the ruins was unsettling, and Li Lin vigilantly scanned the surroundings, guarding Liya and Xiao Xing. The aftershocks of the earthquake had finally subsided, but the air was thick with dust and the scent of fear.
"We need to get out of here quickly," Li Lin said softly, determination flickering in his eyes.
Liya nodded, gently stroking the frail Xiao Xing in her arms. "It looks very weak."
Li Lin frowned. "That earthquake must be related to it. We need to find out what happened."
Just then, a faint sound caught Li Lin's attention. He swiftly turned around, instinctively positioning himself in front of Liya and Xiao Xing.
"Someone's coming," Li Lin whispered, "be careful."
From the shadows of the ruins, several figures suddenly emerged. Dressed in black combat gear and wielding advanced weapons, their eyes glinted with menace. The leader was a burly man with a grotesque scar across his face.
"Hand over that beast," the scarred man said coldly, "or you'll all die."
Li Lin narrowed his eyes. "Who are you?"
"Codename: Hound," the scarred man sneered. "Plunderer Elite Special Squad—we're here to complete a mission."
A chill ran through Li Lin. The Plunderer Elite meant they were far more dangerous than ordinary raiders.
"You won't lay a finger on Xiao Xing," Li Lin gritted his teeth.
Hound scoffed dismissively. "You overestimate yourself."
Before he could finish his words, he suddenly raised his weapon and shot at Li Lin. Li Lin quickly dodged while pushing Liya and Xiao Xing aside.
"Liya, take Xiao Xing and hide!" Li Lin shouted as he leaped toward Hound.
A fierce battle erupted amidst the ruins. Li Lin engaged Hound with his exceptional combat skills, but it was clear that Hound was stronger. Soon, Li Lin found himself at a disadvantage, sustaining multiple injuries.
Liya hid behind a large rock, tightly holding onto Xiao Xing. She anxiously watched the fight and suddenly had an idea.
"Li Lin!" Liya called out, "Use the terrain of the ruins!"
Li Lin instantly understood. He began to maneuver skillfully through the debris, using the complex landscape to wear down Hound's stamina. This strategy proved effective, and Hound's movements started to slow.
Just as Li Lin was about to gain the upper hand, Hound suddenly pulled out a specially crafted dagger. With a flash of cold light, Li Lin couldn't dodge in time and felt a deep cut across his abdomen.
"Ah!" Li Lin cried out in pain, staggering backward.
Hound approached with a sinister grin. "Accept your fate, kid."
In this critical moment, Xiao Xing suddenly broke free from Liya's embrace and charged onto the battlefield. Its eyes sparkled with blue light, enveloped in a strange energy.
"Xiao Xing, no!" Liya exclaimed.
But Xiao Xing had already reached Li Lin's side. It howled to the sky, and a dazzling blue light erupted from its body. The brilliance enveloped the entire battlefield, pushing back Hound and his minions, their bodies trembling uncontrollably from the force of the energy.
Li Lin stared in astonishment at the scene before him. Xiao Xing's power exceeded anything he could have imagined.
The light gradually faded, and Hound and his subordinates collapsed to the ground, their fighting abilities extinguished. Xiao Xing had also exhausted her strength, weakly falling at Li Lin's feet.
Li Lin quickly picked up Xiao Xing, keeping a wary eye on Hound. "Now, tell me your purpose."
Hound struggled to lift his head, a flicker of terror in his eyes. "We... were ordered... to come..."
"Whose orders?" Li Lin pressed.
But Hound had already lost consciousness. Li Lin frowned, filled with confusion. Who was behind all this?
"Li Lin!" Liya ran over, "Are you okay?"
Li Lin shook his head. "I'm fine," he said, looking down at Xiao Xing in his arms. "But this matter is far from over."
A commotion arose in the distance, as if more people were approaching. Li Lin and Liya exchanged a glance and nodded in agreement.
"We need to get out of here," Li Lin said. "Find a safe place to treat Xiao Xing."
Liya nodded. "I know of a hidden cave nearby."
The two of them carried Xiao Xing and swiftly disappeared into the ruins. Behind them, more pursuers were closing in, and a larger conspiracy was brewing.
