The gunfire erupted suddenly, and Li Lin tackled Liya to the ground. "Get down!"
Bullets whizzed past their heads, striking the wall behind them and sparking. Li Lin's heart raced, cold sweat pouring down; they had fallen into an ambush.
"Damn it, we're surrounded," Liya gritted her teeth and whispered, a flicker of fear flashing in her eyes.
Li Lin quickly scanned their surroundings. The abandoned factory was shrouded in shadows, making it difficult to gauge the number and position of the enemies. Xiao Xing pressed close to his leg, emitting a low whimper.
"Don't panic; we still have a chance," Li Lin said, gripping the dagger tightly, his gaze resolute.
Another round of gunfire erupted, forcing them to huddle behind a pile of discarded machinery. Li Lin took a deep breath, his mind racing; they needed to break through quickly, or it would be the end.
"Liya, can you still fight?"
"Of course," Liya replied through gritted teeth as she stood up, but her expression suddenly changed. She clutched her right arm, blood seeping through her fingers.
Li Lin's heart sank. "You're hurt."
"It's just a scratch; I'm fine," Liya insisted, trying to hold herself together.
Li Lin frowned; the situation was worse than he had imagined. Not only were they trapped, but Liya was also injured. At that moment, Xiao Xing suddenly perked up and let out a low growl.
"Something's coming," Li Lin said alertly, glancing in the direction Xiao Xing indicated.
Three fully armed raiders were stealthily approaching their hiding spot. A glint of cold determination flashed in Li Lin's eyes; he knew this was their opportunity.
"Liya, on the count of three, you run to the left. Xiao Xing, follow Liya."
Liya nodded, gripping the iron pipe tightly, while Xiao Xing crouched low, ready to spring into action.
"One, two, three!"
Li Lin burst forward, his figure darting like a ghost as he struck a nearby raider with a swift chop to the back of the neck, sending the raider crashing to the ground.
At the same time, Liya and Xiao Xing charged to the left. Liya swung her iron pipe, accurately smashing it into a raider's knee, while Xiao Xing leaped up, biting down on another raider's wrist.
Gunfire erupted again. Li Lin moved quickly through the chaos, dodging bullets from all directions. His movements were fluid and precise, each strike deadly accurate.
"Quick! To the basement!" Li Lin shouted, tossing a smoke grenade.
Thick smoke instantly filled the space, buying them precious time as the three of them and their beast rushed toward the basement entrance.
"Don't let them get away!" an angry shout came from behind.
Li Lin supported Liya as they hurried down the stairs, with Xiao Xing closely following, keeping a vigilant eye on their pursuers.
The basement was dark and damp, the air thick with a musty smell. Using the faint light available, Li Lin spotted a hidden passageway.
"This way," he whispered, leading the way inside.
The passage was narrow and winding, forcing them to bend low as they moved. Li Lin could hear his own rapid breathing and the footsteps of their pursuers growing closer behind them.
Suddenly, a light appeared at the end of the tunnel. Li Lin's heart leaped with hope as he quickened his pace. However, when they burst out of the passageway, they froze at the sight before them.
A tall man with a stern face stood there, flanked by a dozen fully armed soldiers. The man's gaze swept over Li Lin and his companions before settling on Xiao Xing.
"I've finally found you," the man said, his voice deep and imposing. "Li Lin, you are merely part of a larger plan. Now hand over that little beast."
Li Lin clenched his fists, a glint of determination flashing in his eyes. He knew that the real crisis was only just beginning.
