Li Lin led his Squad deep into the Gray Territory, tracking the trail of the raiders. The ruins of an abandoned factory loomed in the thick fog, and the air was heavy with the stench of decay.
"Be careful, there might be an ambush," Hawk whispered, scanning the surroundings warily.
Li Lin nodded, gripping his weapon tightly. Xiao Xing paced anxiously at his feet, letting out low whimpers.
Suddenly, a sharp whistle pierced the silence. Dozens of raiders sprang from the rubble, opening fire on the Squad.
"Damn it!" Li Lin cursed, quickly pulling Liya to take cover behind a crumbling wall. Bullets rained down like hail, shattering stone and sending debris flying.
Hawk expertly rolled behind a pile of scrap and fired a shot. One raider fell to the ground with a thud.
"We're surrounded!" Liya shouted in panic.
Li Lin gritted his teeth. "Split up and break through!"
The members of the Squad quickly scattered, using the terrain for cover as they engaged in fierce gunfire with the raiders. The sounds of gunshots, explosions, and screams intertwined, turning the abandoned factory into a battlefield.
Xiao Xing suddenly perked up, letting out a sharp cry. Li Lin's heart raced as he instinctively dropped to the ground. A sniper bullet whizzed past his head.
"That was close!" Li Lin gasped, casting a grateful glance at Xiao Xing.
Xiao Xing's eyes glimmered with light as its body began to tremble. An invisible wave of energy spread out, causing the raiders' communication devices to malfunction and their formation to fall into chaos.
"Now's our chance!" Li Lin shouted, charging out from cover first.
He sprinted like a cheetah, dodging a barrage of bullets as he closed in on one raider. With a swift sidestep, Li Lin evaded the enemy's gunfire and delivered a powerful punch to the raider's jaw.
The raider crumpled to the ground, and Li Lin seized their weapon, pivoting to aim at another enemy.
The Falcon seized the opportunity, skillfully weaving through the ruins and precisely targeting the enemy's vital points with each shot. Every bullet was well-placed, and every movement was calculated.
Although not skilled in combat, Liya remained calm, providing cover for her teammates while closely monitoring Xiao Xing's condition.
The battle raged on fiercely; despite Squad's bravery, they were ultimately outnumbered. Li Lin felt her strength rapidly depleting, her breaths growing more labored.
"We can't hold on much longer!" the Falcon shouted, a hint of despair in his voice.
At that moment, the leader of the raiders appeared. He was towering and clad in heavy armor, wielding a massive energy cannon.
"Li Lin, you can't escape!" the leader sneered as he raised the energy cannon.
Li Lin's pupils constricted as she instinctively lunged toward Liya. "Watch out!"
A blinding beam shot through the air, striking the ruins behind Li Lin. The deafening explosion sent debris flying.
"Falcon!" Liya screamed.
The Falcon stood up with great difficulty, bloodied but resolute. His gaze was unwavering. "You all need to go! I'll hold them off!"
"No!" Li Lin shouted. "We leave together!"
The Falcon shook his head, a bitter smile on his face. "There's no time. Take Xiao Xing and get out of here. Only he can uncover the truth."
Li Lin wanted to say more, but the Falcon had already turned and charged at the raider leader. He pulled out his last grenade and lunged toward him.
"For a better tomorrow!" The Falcon's voice was drowned out by the thunderous explosion.
Li Lin stood frozen in place, watching helplessly as the falcon and the enemy perished together. Hot tears blurred his vision, and an overwhelming sense of sorrow and anger surged within him.
"Li Lin, we have to go!" Liya urged, pulling at his arm.
Grinding his teeth, Li Lin picked up Xiao Xing and rushed toward the exit with the remaining members of the squad. Behind them, the shouts of the raiders and the sound of gunfire grew closer.
In that critical moment, a raider suddenly opened fire on his own. "Follow me!" the man shouted. "I know a safe route!"
Li Lin hesitated for a moment, but with no other choice, he decided to trust him. The squad followed the traitor, struggling to break through amidst the hail of bullets.
Finally, they burst out of the factory's confines. The sounds of their pursuers faded into the distance, allowing the squad to catch their breath.
"Why are you helping us?" Li Lin asked warily, eyeing the traitor.
The traitor removed his helmet, revealing a weary face. "I've had enough of the raiders' brutality. They are planning a terrible conspiracy that will affect the entire wasteland."
Li Lin frowned. "What conspiracy?"
"They want to control creatures like your Little Beast," the traitor pointed at Xiao Xing, "using their energy to create terrifying weapons."
Xiao Xing squirmed uneasily in Li Lin's arms, letting out a low whimper.
