Li Lin widened his eyes, staring in disbelief at the newcomer. "Lao Zhang? What are you doing here?"
"The world is full of surprises, brother," Lao Zhang said with a bitter smile as he approached, the wrinkles on his face deeper than Li Lin remembered. "This cursed place is no good for anyone."
Xiao Xing watched Lao Zhang warily, letting out a low hiss. Li Lin gently stroked its feathers, soothingly saying, "Don't be nervous, little one. This is my old comrade."
Lao Yang and Liya exchanged glances, clearly surprised to encounter one of Li Lin's acquaintances in such a place.
"How did you find this place?" Lao Zhang asked, looking around with a flicker of unease in his eyes.
Li Lin briefly explained their predicament but remained puzzled by Lao Zhang's appearance. "What about you? How did you end up here?"
Lao Zhang avoided Li Lin's gaze, his tone vague. "It's a long story. We should leave this place first; it's not safe."
Noticing Lao Zhang's unusual reaction, Li Lin felt alarm bells ringing in his mind and subtly signaled for Liya and Lao Yang to stay alert.
"Wait," Liya suddenly spoke up. "We just discovered something important. Can we take a look at these murals first?"
Lao Zhang's face turned pale in an instant. "Murals? What murals?"
Li Lin keenly picked up on Lao Zhang's strange reaction. "These ancient relics on the walls—what do you know about them?"
Lao Zhang's gaze darted around, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "I... I'm not very familiar with these things. You'd better not touch them."
At that moment, Xiao Xing suddenly broke free from Li Lin's embrace and flew towards the energy core, its body emitting a faint glow once more, resonating with the core.
"No!" Lao Zhang shouted suddenly, his voice filled with fear. "Don't let it get close to that thing!"
Li Lin grabbed Lao Zhang by the collar. "What do you know? Speak up!"
Lao Zhang trembled, deep fear evident in his eyes. "I... I was forced. They threatened me to keep watch here."
"Who?" Li Lin pressed.
"The Raiders Group," Lao Zhang whispered. "They are searching for an ancient weapon, believing that this ruin holds secrets."
Liya looked at Xiao Xing in astonishment. "So, Xiao Xing really has a connection to this ruin?"
Lao Zhang nodded. "That creature... it might be the key, but I don't know how exactly."
Li Lin released Lao Zhang and fell into deep thought when suddenly, hurried footsteps echoed from the corridor.
"Damn it, it's the raiders!" Lao Zhang said in terror. "They're coming!"
Li Lin quickly made a decision. "Liya, Lao Yang, take Xiao Xing and go ahead. I'll hold them off."
"No way!" Liya insisted firmly. "We're leaving together."
At that moment, Xiao Xing suddenly let out a sharp cry, its body radiating a dazzling light, causing the entire ruins to tremble violently.
"What happened?" Lao Yang asked in panic.
Li Lin looked at Xiao Xing, a strange feeling swelling within her. "It's... protecting us."
The light enveloped the entire team, and the ground began to collapse. Li Lin felt darkness engulf her as she lost consciousness.
After an unknown amount of time, Li Lin slowly opened her eyes to find herself in an unfamiliar wilderness, surrounded by her teammates, all still unconscious.
Xiao Xing curled up against Li Lin's chest, breathing weakly. It seemed to have exhausted all its strength to protect everyone.
Li Lin gently stroked Xiao Xing's feathers, filled with questions and worries. What had happened? What secrets lay within the ruins? What was the Raiders Group plotting?
Most importantly, what kind of secret was hidden within Xiao Xing?
