I stood on my tiptoes and looked ahead, only to see the mountain path slowly beginning to collapse. At first, it was just a few small stones that fell, but then larger boulders came crashing down, kicking up dust and debris, accompanied by a terrifying roar.
"Fall back!"
My voice cut through the surrounding silence like steel.
Everyone reacted immediately, retreating hastily.
The mountain path disintegrated rapidly before our eyes, with rocks tumbling down amidst a cacophony of tearing sounds, like the furious roar of nature mercilessly swallowing the once-passable trail.
Some students nearly lost their footing in the panic, but thankfully others caught them just in time.
The group finally came to a halt, anxiety and fear etched on everyone's faces. The path had been completely destroyed; all that remained was a sheer cliff, with mist in the distance resembling an insurmountable barrier, isolating our way forward into an unknown world.
"Damn it..."
I muttered under my breath, my brow furrowed. I knew all too well that this meant we would have to take a detour, and the terrain of this mountain was complex; one misstep could lead us into even greater trouble.
"What do we do now, Brother Tian?"
Chen Mu's voice broke the brief silence, his eyes flickering with anxiety.
I didn’t answer right away; instead, I quickly scanned the surrounding terrain, trying to find an alternative route. The collapse of the mountain path had limited my options further, and time was slipping away. The sky grew darker, and a cold wind mixed with moisture hinted at an impending storm.
"Whatever happens, we can't just wait here."
I finally made my decision, my tone firm and resolute.
"We'll go around the mountainside to avoid this collapse area and try to find a new path."
Everyone exchanged glances; although doubt lingered in their hearts, in this moment, as their rescuer, I became their only source of reassurance.
They nodded silently, reorganizing their gear as they followed me toward another path on the mountain.
However, before we could get far, a low rumble suddenly echoed from the sky, as if some beast was roaring in the distance.
"What is that..."
Chen Mu frowned at the sky, his voice trembling slightly.
In the next moment, massive boulders on the mountain began to shake violently, followed by an overwhelming torrent of mud and stones rushing down from the peak like a monstrous creature composed of countless debris and rubble, sweeping toward us with irresistible force.
A landslide!
In an instant, my body instinctively reacted:
"Run!"
Before the words left my mouth, a deafening roar erupted—the ground shook as a massive flow of mud suddenly cascaded down from the mountain's peak, carrying stones and dead wood, rushing madly toward the steep slope where we stood.
In a heartbeat, the air was filled with dust and debris, completely obscuring our vision, plunging everything into chaos.
The students panicked and scattered in all directions; a few slipped and fell directly into the mud pit.
As I ran, I saw Chen Mu trapped in the sludge, nearly being swept away by the torrent.
I desperately pushed against the soft ground and sprinted to Chen Mu's side, grabbing his backpack strap and pulling him back with all my strength.
"Hold on! Don't let go!"
I shouted, my veins bulging from exertion as I felt like my muscles were about to tear apart.
At that moment, another girl lost her footing and slid toward the edge of the steep cliff. Her scream pierced through the howling wind, chilling me to the bone.
Without a second thought, I turned and dashed over, grabbing her arm and pulling her back with all my might. Our bodies stumbled in the mud, nearly tumbling into the abyss together.
"It's okay, it's okay..."
I gasped heavily, struggling to steady my trembling legs.
