The students stood there, just a few steps away from me, yet they felt like ghosts from another world. Their figures were blurred, as if separated by a thick layer of air. No one moved, and no one spoke. Their expressions were carved in cold stone, exuding a suffocating indifference.
Zhang Kai furrowed his brow, his gaze flickering but never daring to meet mine. Liu Jie simply turned his back to the cliff, and the other students did the same, standing rigidly without taking a single step.
"No... no, don't do this!" I murmured to myself, my voice growing weaker. My fingertips could no longer bear the weight; the edge of the rock scraped against my palms with each movement, sending sharp pangs of pain through me. My body struggled to climb higher, but every attempt was futile, only hastening my fall.
Just as my last finger was about to slip away, I looked up again and saw Chen Mu. The shy boy who always called me "Brother Feng" stood not far away, his expression calm and cold, as if everything had been anticipated long ago.
My hands finally lost their grip on the rock, and my body fell into darkness. I struggled to open my eyes, wanting to see everything around me, but my vision grew increasingly blurred. In the final moment of my descent, I chuckled softly and slowly pulled out a strand of fine silk from my pocket, tossing it toward the nearby dead tree.
"Still ending up like this, haha..."
Zhang Kai led the students back to the makeshift camp, where everyone sat together in silence with their heads down. After a while, Chen Mu spoke softly, "Are we... doing the right thing?"
"What’s wrong with it?" Zhang Kai shot him a glance and snorted coldly.
"But... but Brother Tian did it to save you..."
"So what? Isn’t it his duty to save me?"
"Damn it, I'm the chosen one! My life is worth much more than his!" Zhang Kai suddenly stood up and shouted at Chen Mu.
Liu Jie tugged at Zhang Kai's sleeve, urging him to calm down.
Zhang Kai sat down, panting heavily. After a while, he coldly said, "Remember this: if you don't want trouble, keep what just happened to yourselves."
"Letting someone die without helping is everyone's fault. When the time comes, we'll say Tian Feng fell by accident."
"Alright, everyone back to your tents. Tomorrow morning, we'll contact that damned rescue team and see when they can get us out of here."
With that, Zhang Kai abruptly pulled Liu Jie up from beside him, and the two turned to enter the tent. The remaining students followed suit, trickling into their own tents.
Not far from the temporary camp, a dark figure appeared. The figure tested the wind direction with a hand, then took out a handful of mysterious wild herbs from their pocket and slowly ignited them. A wisp of blue smoke drifted through the misty woods toward the camp.
"Heh, the show is about to begin..." the shadow murmured before swiftly leaving in the opposite direction.
After a while, sounds of roaring echoed from within the tents. Suddenly, Zhang Kai burst out of his tent in disarray, running while turning back to swing his fists at the air.
"Don't come near! Don't follow me!"
"Ah... please, don’t kill me! It’s not my fault! It’s you! Who told you to be prettier than me?"
Following closely behind, Liu Jie also stumbled out of her tent, bare and trembling. She fell to her knees, hugging her legs tightly as tears streamed down her cheeks, mixing with the dirt.
Screams and tearing sounds erupted throughout the camp as chaos ensued. All the students were lost in their own illusions; some were frantically pulling their hair, others curled up on the ground shivering, and some began to fight each other.
Before long, everyone in the camp scattered into the depths of Ailao Mountain. The camp fell silent in an instant, leaving only the crackling sound of the bonfire.
At that moment, the dark figure slowly emerged from the shadows...
