The night was as dark as ink, with the stars hidden away.
Leng Fengyang, who had been resting for a moment, suddenly opened his eyes and looked out the window. Vehicles weaved through the desolate city, their wheels crunching over the broken asphalt, producing a dull sound that seemed like a sigh from the world in response to this apocalyptic catastrophe.
Ahead, an abandoned hospital stood like a faint lighthouse in the darkness, drawing them in.
"There’s a hospital up ahead; we should be able to gather some supplies," Luo Shanhe said, peering through the scope of his sniper rifle mounted on the roof of the vehicle, his voice tinged with barely concealed excitement.
The three quickly devised a plan. Leng Fengyang would use his agility and keen instincts to infiltrate the hospital and gather supplies. Luo Shanhe would set up a sniper position at a high vantage point outside to ensure Leng Fengyang's safety, while A Yan would remain in the vehicle, ready to provide support and respond to any emergencies.
"This is a walkie-talkie I found at the car factory that still works. After testing it, I can confirm it's functional. Lao Luo and I will each take one. A Yan, please adjust the frequency of the car's walkie-talkie to match ours so we can stay in contact."
With a soft sound of the engine shutting off, the three split up.
Leng Fengyang took a deep breath and silently approached the hospital entrance. As he pushed open the door, a wave of air mixed with disinfectant and mildew hit him, causing him to frown involuntarily. He turned on his flashlight, its beam flickering in the dim corridor, each step feeling particularly heavy.
After navigating through a dust-covered hallway, Leng Fengyang finally arrived at a half-open laboratory door.
【Detecting Zhang Zombie Vaccine Blueprint, entering Synthesis Chamber.】
The system's prompt echoed in his ears, guiding him deeper into exploration.
Zombie Toxin Vaccine?
This made Leng Fengyang's heart skip a beat; wasn't that the antidote that could save humanity? He eagerly stepped into the laboratory where a yellowed blueprint lay quietly on the lab table, indicating that someone had been researching a vaccine capable of eliminating Corpse Poison here. But for some unknown reason, all researchers had vanished.
Just as he prepared to collect the blueprint, a low groan shattered the silence. From the shadows of the laboratory emerged pairs of blood-red eyes gradually illuminating the darkness.
An old doctor with glasses and a bald head stepped forward slowly, draped in a robe with a twisted expression on his face, baring his teeth while holding a scalpel. Following closely behind was a young male doctor wearing a blood-stained coat, with an IV bag hanging around his neck and bloodthirsty greed flickering in his eyes.
But most unsettling of all was the seductive nurse; though she had become an unconscious corpse, her former beauty and allure added an eerie quality to her terrifying presence.
Not only that, but countless rotting corpses in robes were trailing behind.
"Detecting a large wave of corpses approaching."
"Lao Luo, prepare to cover me!"
After hearing the system notification about an abnormal human transformation, Leng Fengyang quickly reported the situation through the intercom while drawing the blood-stained rebar from his shoulder, ready to fight at any moment.
Luo Shanhe's sniper rifle fired at just the right moment, accurately taking down several approaching corpses. However, their numbers were overwhelming and they moved with agility, soon surrounding him.
The battle was about to erupt.
Leng Fengyang first dealt with the old doctor wearing glasses, blocking the surgical knife that lunged at him. The rebar smashed down hard on the bald head, sending rotten flesh flying.
A young male doctor lunged at him from behind. With the system's prompt, Leng Fengyang swiftly thrust the rebar through his skull, executing the move cleanly and decisively.
But then there was the seductive nurse, her long tongue flicking out like a siren. Her speed was astonishing; she nimbly dodged attacks and slashed through the air with her sharp nails, closing in on Leng Fengyang.
In that critical moment, Luo Shanhe's sniper bullet pierced through the window glass, hitting the seductive nurse squarely in the head, giving Leng Fengyang a brief moment to breathe.
"A-Feng, things aren't looking good. Get out of the lab as soon as possible. The window on your right doesn't have a stainless steel screen; it's your escape route. I'll help clear out the monsters below the windowsill."
Luo Shanhe's voice came through the intercom. He had a complete view of the situation in the lab and was preparing to carve out a safe path for Leng Fengyang.
Upon hearing this, a warm current surged in Leng Fengyang's heart. He knew how fortunate it was to have a reliable partner supporting him in this perilous apocalypse.
He quickly adjusted his breathing, his gaze sharp as he scanned the frenzied corpses rushing towards him, formulating a plan in his mind.
"Got it, Lao Luo! Be careful!"
Leng Fengyang replied briefly before springing into action like a leopard leaping to the right side. He used obstacles within the lab for cover, moving stealthily to avoid attracting unnecessary attention.
Reaching the window without a stainless steel screen, Leng Fengyang peered down at several roaring corpses pacing below. With ambush ahead and pursuers behind, he gritted his teeth and prepared to confront these bloodthirsty monsters head-on.
"Leng Fengyang, hold on for a minute; I'm driving to your position right now."
The intercom crackled with A Yan's voice. Both Leng Fengyang and Luo Shanhe understood what she intended—she aimed to use her tank's speed and impact to deal with the corpses lingering beneath the window while also providing support for Leng Fengyang.
"A Yan, I'll cover you; get to A-Feng as quickly as you can."
On the other end of the intercom, Luo Shanhe echoed back, and for the first time, the three of them displayed a remarkable synergy.
Leng Fengyang turned to look at the laboratory filled with decaying corpses, gripping the bloodied rebar tightly in his hand. He remained calm; a man must grit his teeth and endure. He adjusted his breathing, skillfully dodging behind obstacles in the lab while occasionally swinging the rebar to strike precisely at the vital points of the approaching corpses, buying precious time for A Yan's arrival.
Time ticked away second by second, the air thick with tension and the stench of blood.
In two minutes, a roar of engines approached from afar. A Yan drove the tank like a bolt of black lightning, crashing through obstacles and coming to a precise stop beneath the window. The impact scattered the gathered corpses, clearing a path for Leng Fengyang.
"A-Feng, jump out the window!"
Luo Shanhe had the best vantage point and saw A Yan maneuvering into position, urging Leng Fengyang to escape. He then pulled the trigger of his sniper rifle; a bullet whizzed past Leng Fengyang's ear, piercing through a corpse that lunged at him from behind.
Leng Fengyang dropped down from the windowsill onto the tank's roof. Without hesitation, he rolled over and dove into the vehicle just as corpses began to swarm from all directions.
Inside, A Yan saw this and floored the accelerator. The roar of the engine seemed to mock death itself as tires screeched against the ground, kicking up clouds of dust. The vehicle surged forward, instantly leaving the surrounding corpses behind.
Leng Fengyang gripped the handrail tightly, peering through a gap in the window to see those twisted figures struggling in the night, helplessly watching as they were left further behind.
"Lao Luo, how's it going on your end?"
Leng Fengyang shouted into the communicator, anxiety filling his heart.
"I'm fine. Waiting for you at the rendezvous point," Luo Shanhe's voice came through cool and confident, offering Leng Fengyang a sliver of reassurance.
Leng Fengyang looked ahead at the medical supplies and silently thought: as long as we survive, there is hope to reach the Dark Side of the Moon. But what concerned him more was that blueprint for the Zombie Vaccine he had just collected.
With mutated species rampaging and humanity facing annihilation, creating a Zombie Toxin Vaccine at this moment could undoubtedly be recorded in human history as a salvation.
