When I woke up, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.
Jiang Feng was sitting by my side, his eyes red and puffy.
"You’re awake!" He grasped my hand, his voice trembling.
"Where's Hu Lan?" I asked weakly.
"She was captured. That foolish woman actually thought she could pin the murder on Shangguan Ming. Also, Shangguan Ming has been caught too."
I closed my eyes and let out a long sigh.
This nightmare was finally over.
"Are you okay?" Jiang Feng looked at me with concern.
I shook my head. "Just some superficial injuries."
"Linghua," Jiang Feng suddenly said seriously, "I'm sorry. I didn't protect you well."
I looked at him, feeling a mix of emotions.
"It's not your fault," I replied. "I was just too naive."
Jiang Feng fell silent for a moment before saying, "Linghua, I've always..."
He hesitated, and I understood what he wanted to say.
"Jiang Feng," I interrupted him, "I know your feelings, but I..."
"I know," Jiang Feng said with a bitter smile, "you haven't forgotten him."
I lowered my head, remaining silent.
Shangguan Ming was a liar, but I had once loved him sincerely.
"Linghua," Jiang Feng tightened his grip on my hand, "give me a chance to take care of you."
I looked into his sincere eyes, feeling a flicker of uncertainty in my heart.
Perhaps I really should let go of the past and start anew.
"Jiang Feng," I lifted my head to meet his gaze, "I..."
Just then, the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open.
A stern-looking middle-aged man strode in, followed by two police officers.
"Are you Zhu Linghua?" His gaze was sharp as a knife.
I nodded, feeling a tightness in my throat.
"I am Chief Inspector Chen Tie. I have some questions for you."
Jiang Feng stood up and positioned himself in front of me. "She just woke up; her health is still very fragile."
Chen Tie shot a cold glance at Jiang Feng. "Jiang Feng, you'd better not interfere."
A jolt of surprise ran through me—did they know each other?
“Linghua,” Jiang Feng turned around, a flicker of guilt in his eyes. “There are some things I need to confess to you.”
Before I could respond, Chen Tie interrupted, “You don’t need to say anything; I’ll handle this.”
He turned to me, his voice icy. “Zhu Linghua, do you know Jiang Feng’s true identity?”
I looked at Jiang Feng, an ominous premonition rising within me.
“He is the son of Zhu Biao, raised from a young age to be a pawn.”
I felt all the blood in my body freeze.
“No way…” I murmured, unwilling to believe my ears.
Jiang Feng lowered his head, silently acknowledging the truth.
My world crumbled once again.
“Why…” My voice trembled. “So everything was premeditated?”
Jiang Feng lifted his head, pain evident in his eyes. “At first, it was my father’s orders; appointing me as the deputy captain was to monitor Shangguan Ming. But later…”
“Enough!” I interrupted him sharply, my heart aching like a knife. “You’re all liars!”
Chen Tie sneered. “It seems you still don’t know the most exciting part.”
I stared at him in confusion.
“Jiang Feng knew from the beginning that Shangguan Ming planned to kill you on the ship; he was supposed to handle the aftermath.”
I closed my eyes, feeling the world spin around me.
It turned out I was just a pawn, a pitiful joke.
“Linghua, I’m sorry…” Jiang Feng reached out to touch me, but I pushed him away forcefully.
“Get lost!” I shouted, tears streaming down my face. “All of you, just go!”
Chen Tie coldly watched the scene unfold. “Jiang Feng, let’s go with us.”
Jiang Feng didn’t follow Chen Tie; instead, he continued to look at me and said, “Linghua, please believe me. At first, I was just cleaning up the mess, but I fell in love with you uncontrollably. That’s why I risked everything to save you. I’ve always wanted to come clean, but there was never a chance…”
I raised my hand to interrupt him. “No need to say anything. It’s all over.”
I turned to look out the window; the sun was shining brightly, as if mocking my naivety.
A year later, my wounds had healed. I left that city and returned to the small town where I was born and raised.
I stood by the window, gazing at the rolling green hills in the distance.
The sunlight gently warmed my face as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The air was filled with the fragrance of earth and grass, refreshing and uplifting.
Hu Lan was sentenced to life imprisonment for intentional homicide.
Shangguan Ming’s charge of intentional homicide did not stand, but he was sentenced to twenty years for kidnapping and financial fraud combined.
As for Jiang Feng, he was acquitted.
The police stated that at most he was an accomplice in Shangguan Ming's intentional homicide.
But with the charge of intentional homicide against Shangguan Ming not established, Jiang Feng's guilt also fell apart.
Well, I actually believe what he said. If it weren't for Jiang Feng saving me, I might have already died at Shangguan Ming's hands.
"Mom, look!" Xiao Yuan's cheerful voice rang out.
I turned around and saw her and Xiao Yu playing and chasing each other in the nearby field. The laughter of the two Honeymoon Cruise ren was crisp and pleasant, like a ray of sunshine that dispelled the lingering gloom in my heart.
A slight smile crept onto my lips, but in the next moment, it froze. Those painful memories surged back like a tide, and I couldn't help but clench my fists.
"Linghua!" A familiar voice interrupted my thoughts.
It was Jiang Feng.
So what!
I felt that having two Honeymoon Cruise ren was enough for my life.
I ignored him and took Xiao Yuan and Xiao Yu's hands as we walked toward the house.
The sunlight poured down on us, warm and bright.
