Rao Jie relaxed her heart, and her hand loosened.
Sensing Rao Jie’s relaxation, Wu Rong adjusted his grip, gently holding her hand. In the quiet of the car, their hands intertwined in a place unseen by others, gradually softening each other's hearts.
When the car stopped, Wu Rong lifted his head from Rao Jie’s shoulder. He hadn’t slept much the night before and was still fuming about something that had happened earlier, so he had inadvertently dozed off in the car. Seeing Rao Jie quietly leaning against him, he rubbed his sore shoulder, feeling utterly drained.
Wu Rong released his stiff hand and said to Rao Jie, “Wait for me over there by the car.” He knew Rao Jie wouldn’t walk with him to the parking lot, but he was worried she might go off with Long Yong, so he wanted to give her a heads-up.
Rao Jie swallowed and finally nodded in agreement.
After getting out of the car and listening to Ye Ming say a few words, everyone dispersed.
On the way home, both Wu Rong and Rao Jie were unusually quiet, neither speaking as if they were waiting for the other to break the silence.
Eventually, Rao Jie couldn’t hold back any longer and asked, “What did you talk about with Chang Fei at the glass exhibition? You seemed angry with me afterward.”
It was better not to bring it up at all; once mentioned, Wu Rong recalled the scene he had witnessed. Although he had deleted the footage from his phone right away, the memory was still vivid in his mind.
“How can you even ask that? Don’t you know what you did?” Wu Rong replied irritably.
Rao Jie looked confused. “I really don’t know; that’s why I’m asking you.”
Wu Rong felt even angrier but thought it through; for Rao Jie, it might not have been a guilty matter at all. Getting mad at her would only make him seem petty.
“Forget it; I don’t want to talk about it,” Wu Rong said, refusing to continue the discussion. Rao Jie couldn’t force him to speak either.
Thus, while they didn’t continue to argue, there remained an unresolved tension between them.
A few days later at home, Wu Rong noticed that aside from going out for work, Rao Jie hadn’t been meeting with Long Yong again. She mostly went between her job at the dessert shop and home.
Wu Rong initially thought she might be going on dates without telling him, so he deliberately spent an entire day at the dessert shop where Rao Jie worked. To his surprise, she really was just working there all day long.
However, he noticed that one of the male coworkers seemed to have a different attitude toward Rao Jie. He needed to be cautious.
The male colleague who worked alongside Rao Jie often approached her with a nervous demeanor to complain.
“Rao Jie, could you please ask your boyfriend not to come around? He keeps staring at me whenever he’s here; I can’t work properly! I swear I have no intentions toward you—I have a girlfriend!”
Rao Jie sighed, "He's not my boyfriend."
Her colleagues teased her, "If he's not your boyfriend, then he must be a crazy suitor. With such high qualities and so devoted, why don't you just agree to be his girlfriend?"
Another colleague pointed outside and said, "I bet it's because he's too handsome; it feels unsafe. Ever since Poster Boy showed up at our little shop, our customer base has increased, and beautiful women are flocking over."
"I'm really envious of you, Rao Jie. A suitor so handsome and devoted, who only has eyes for you, picking you up early and late. You should just give in."
Feeling flustered by their teasing, Rao Jie had no choice but to run to the kitchen to help make desserts.
