What should I do? Just as I was aimlessly wandering around the room like a headless fly, trying to figure something out, I heard the sounds of a fight outside, voices growing louder.
After a series of loud bangs, someone knocked on my door. It was my brother's voice calling, "Sister."
I was about to move some things to open the door, but through the narrow crack, I couldn't see a single figure.
"I'm coming," I said weakly.
The items I was holding scraped against the floor as I cried, "Brother, I haven't eaten much today; I can't move."
I wondered how long I could deceive Chen Yifei like this. All I could do was keep shuffling around while thinking of a way out.
Outside, there were more banging sounds, and I thought they were back again.
With the noise outside, I smashed the small window in the bathroom. After clearing away the glass shards, I placed a piece of clothing over the broken window.
I moved a chair onto the toilet lid and climbed up onto it, then onto a small stool. Finally, I squeezed through the window sideways.
I slowly inched my way outside and grabbed hold of the eaves. Once steady on my feet, I tried to discern my surroundings. I had climbed into the stairwell and onto the small balcony outside. Here, I could lean against something and rest for a moment.
From this vantage point, I could see the path in the community below. Perhaps someone spotted me; it wasn't long before a crowd gathered downstairs.
Soon after, the police arrived, followed by firefighters and doctors.
I grabbed a firefighter's hand and said, "Call my mom."
The firefighter told me that my mother was right below. With great effort, I was helped down by the firefighter.
The moment I saw my mother, tears streamed down my face as I exclaimed, "Mom, Chen Yifei and his son have imprisoned me."
After that, I couldn't hold on any longer and fainted.
When I opened my eyes again, both my brother and mother were by my side.
My brother was furious; he told me that the man had been arrested and urged me to rest and recover. Aside from feeling physically weak, I didn't have any major issues.
I had properly treated the wounds from climbing through the window, and I woke up. The police naturally came to take my statement, and I provided them with all the information, including the locations of the recording devices I had set up.
As I enjoyed this moment of tranquility, believing that everything had settled down, Lin Wan'er called me. She said that the girl had committed suicide. Wang Zi had taken her own life.
After recovering in the hospital for a day, I attended her funeral. I looked at her beautiful face and felt a deep sense of sorrow. Her suicide note was right there. She wrote that bad people would eventually get their comeuppance. She mentioned that human hearts were too complex for her to understand. She expressed that life was too painful, and she didn’t want to return.
"I heard she killed herself over a man!"
"Was it worth it?"
"Look at how heartbroken her parents are."
I could hear the whispers around me, but I was at a loss for words. After burning incense and paper money, I approached her family and said, "Please accept my condolences."
Wang Zi's brother looked up at me with a bitter smile and said, "My sister is free now."
"Yes," I replied, knowing she would no longer suffer.
With the recordings I had placed, the police obtained evidence that would ensure Chen Yifei and his son couldn't escape justice. Chen Yifei was caught, and among those previously arrested, someone eventually broke down under pressure.
I heard that everyone in the photos had been apprehended; even Lin Wan'er’s ex-boyfriend, who had escaped, was caught along with two others who hadn’t attended the gathering.
My former father-in-law couldn’t withstand interrogation and confessed everything; they indeed wanted to take me back to the countryside. Chen Yifei’s conviction was certain, and I had already filed for divorce as a victim.
When the marriage certificate arrived, I went to see Chen Yifei.
We sat in silence, exchanging no words.
After a long while, he finally spoke, “I really love you!”
I let out a cold laugh.
“I never intended to use those methods against you, but you were investigating Lu Peng.”
Lu Peng was Lin Wan'er’s worthless boyfriend.
“You still chose to hurt me, making your father play along with your act.”
“If it weren’t for your investigation, I wouldn’t have resorted to such measures. You could have quit your job and let me take care of you. Why do you insist on knowing everything?” Chen Yifei roared, slamming his elbow on the table, causing it to rattle.
“Deception cannot yield true feelings.” I left him with that parting remark and stood up to walk away, ignoring the furious man behind me.
Before me lay the bright sunshine.
