Chapter Two: I Might Have Entered the Wrong Set
The call had been disconnected.
Bai Luo stood frozen in place, clutching the phone.
The terms "Ghost Call" and "Marvel" tangled in his mind, ultimately morphing into a painfully absurd complaint: "What the hell is going on here!"
"Ghost Call" was a Japanese horror film, and as the name suggested, it involved receiving a call from one's future self. Those targeted by this vengeful spirit would receive a call from their own future phone number. Once answered, they would hear the sound of their own death, with the time displayed on the caller ID indicating when they would die.
Given the system and the recent phone call, Bai Luo realized he had just received a ghost call from beyond.
From the content of the call, Bai Luo estimated that he might be hit by a car on his way home in five minutes.
A vengeful spirit intruding into Marvel?
Having just sent Peter Quill away, Bai Luo now understood that this world was likely far more complicated than he had imagined.
He took a moment to collect himself. The system's mission had been issued, and the penalty for failure was immediate erasure or being possessed by the vengeful spirit from the ghost call. The consequences were either certain death or a fate worse than death. Given that, he had no other options. He flipped through the system and discovered that even the cheapest exorcism talisman cost one hundred Old White Rabbit points—far beyond what he could afford.
However, knowing how he would die meant he could simply avoid it, giving him a chance to plan for the long term.
In other words, as long as he ensured he wasn't on any road where cars might pass five minutes from now, he could escape this curse of a death call.
Although ghost calls seemed sinister, they weren't truly curses from the future; rather, they were manifestations of a vengeful spirit designed to instill fear.
Bai Luo calculated that even if he ran from his current location to home, it would take at least seven to eight minutes...
Bai Luo took out the Swift Movement Talisman he had exchanged for earlier without hesitation and slapped it onto his leg. Then, he started running.
He had never imagined he could run this fast. In just seven or eight minutes, he zipped through the streets like the wind, reaching his home in no time!
He was astonished. He had thought that the item he exchanged for ten points, although called the Swift Movement Talisman, would only make him a bit faster. He never expected it to turn him into a speedster.
However, as Bai Luo stood at his doorstep, he felt an odd sensation and turned around. Not far away, under the dim light of a streetlamp shrouded in mist, stood a girl who was staring blankly at him. But when Bai Luo focused to see her face more clearly, all he saw was a blank void. Then, she vanished from his sight.
As she disappeared, the headlights of a car in his yard suddenly lit up. Despite being driverless, the engine roared to life.
The scene was bizarre; even Bai Luo gasped in shock. Just a moment ago, he had been in the Marvel Universe beating up Star-Lord, and now it felt like he had stepped into a Vengeful Spirit crossover!
Bai Luo glanced around to ensure there was nothing else amiss before entering his house.
His older sister, Bai Chu, hadn't returned yet. He turned on the lights inside and searched through the System's Talisman inventory. Anything related to ghosts was expensive, but after rummaging through it all, he found an Avoid Ghost Talisman that cost only twenty points. It was meant to ward off evil spirits in a room but was a one-time use item that would only guarantee his safety for that night.
Once he used it, its effect was immediate; the car outside settled down.
Bai Luo then returned to his room; it was getting late.
But just as he pulled the curtains, he saw that figure again standing under the streetlamp, slightly tilting her head as if she were looking at him.
Bai Luo was bold; armed with his Talisman, he stared back at her fearlessly, wanting to see the face of this Vengeful Spirit. Yet again, he came up empty-handed. As he concentrated harder, she blinked out of existence like a ghost.
Taking a deep breath, Bai Luo stood by the window and earnestly said, "System, can I advance some of my Old White Rabbit points? A loan would work too."
Bai Luo realized that his loan request was as insignificant as a fart in front of the System.
When he woke up the second time, he still had only ten points in "savings."
He stepped out of his room and followed the sound to the kitchen, where he saw his cheap sister, Bai Chu, making breakfast.
Unlike the plain and unremarkable Bai Luo, Bai Chu was an absolute beauty. At just seventeen years old, she had already developed a stunning figure. With long hair cascading over her shoulders and delicate features, she embodied both the softness of an Eastern woman and the boldness of a Western woman, being born in the United States to Chinese parents.
Every morning, Bai Luo would see the same scene—Bai Chu wearing a thin tank top while frying eggs, her assets swaying with each movement.
Despite having complained many times before, Bai Luo couldn't help but mutter, "Sister, even though we are siblings by blood, could you please not dress so... um, sexy?"
"Oh? The little brat knows what sexy is?"
Bai Chu teased as she brought over the fried eggs. Although she was officially Bai Luo's sister, she had taken on the role of a motherly figure since she had raised him.
However, Bai Chu was clearly unaware that her little brother was actually an old man whose combined age from two lifetimes exceeded thirty years.
Clearing his throat, the older man Bai Luo sat down at the table and glanced at his sister. All in all, it was a pleasing sight.
Just then, Bai Chu's phone on the table suddenly rang.
As she turned to head back to the kitchen, she heard the sound and looked back. "The caller ID shows my own number? Is my phone malfunctioning or something?"
Bai Luo's expression changed slightly at her words. He quickly raised his hand and slapped down on the phone.
The girl ghost clearly didn't understand that Bai Luo's Yellow Talisman only worked for one night. Unable to take action against him, she turned directly to Bai Chu for a "curveball" rescue!
However, Bai Chu was taken aback by Bai Luo's strong reaction. She pried his hand away and answered the phone without hesitation.
Bai Luo was only nine years old, completely lacking the ability to resist, and could only watch helplessly as Bai Chu answered the phone.
The room immediately fell into a deathly silence.
As a result, the voice on the other end of the line became much clearer.
The background music was "Call Me Maybe," playing in the fast-food restaurant, but throughout the entire call, no one spoke. After about five or six seconds, a gunshot rang out.
The call abruptly ended.
Bai Chu looked bewildered. "Who is playing a prank?"
But Bai Luo stared at her intently. "You stay home today and lie in bed. You're not going anywhere."
