Old Master Jing sat in the conference room on the top floor of the Jing Family Tower. Beside him stood several men in suits, all high-ranking executives of the Jing Family. The air was thick with tension. Old Master Jing remained silent, and no one else dared to speak. Especially Jing Shen, who felt the weight of his grandfather's piercing gaze.
After a long pause, Old Master Jing slammed his coffee cup down on the table, causing everyone to flinch. He turned to Jing Shen and asked, "What have you been doing behind my back?"
Jing Shen looked at him and replied, "Grandfather, I haven't done anything."
Old Master Jing scoffed, "You haven't done anything?"
Jing Shen insisted, "I haven't done anything."
Old Master Jing glared at him. "If you haven't done anything, how did Gu Jingchen get hurt?"
Jing Shen hesitated. He looked at Old Master Jing and said, "What does Gu Jingchen's injury have to do with me?"
Old Master Jing snorted again. "What does it have to do with you?" He fixed his gaze on Jing Shen. "I warned you long ago not to mess with the the Gu Family, but you refused to listen. Now look at what you've done; you've actually laid hands on Gu Jingchen!"
Jing Shen replied firmly, "I’ll say it again: I did not lay a hand on Gu Jingchen."
Old Master Jing sneered, "I know exactly what kind of person you are. You’re petty and hold grudges, always scheming behind people's backs. At the last business banquet, you bowed your head in front of so many people; you must have felt humiliated and are now waiting for a chance to take revenge. Am I right?"
Jing Shen looked at him defiantly. "I didn’t—"
Old Master Jing interrupted him sharply, "Don’t tell me that it was Gu Jingchen who came after you."
Jing Shen responded, "He is a petty person."
"You’re talking nonsense!" Old Master Jing shouted angrily.
Jing Shen remained silent, looking at him without speaking.
Old Master Jing glared at him. "I know exactly what kind of person Gu Jingchen is better than you do." He pointed at Jing Shen. "Your judgment is always clouded by your emotions."
Jing Shen continued to remain silent.
Old Master Jing coldly regarded him. "I truly doubt whether someone as emotionally driven as you is fit to inherit the Jing Family."
Jing Shen took a deep breath. He looked at Old Master Jing and said, "Grandpa..."
Old Master Jing met his gaze, his expression stern. "You should divorce Chen Li as soon as possible and marry the daughter of the the Zhao Family."
Jing Shen was taken aback. "Grandpa..."
Old Master Jing's cold stare pierced through him. "If you want to keep everything you have now, you will do as I say."
Jing Shen clenched his fists tightly.
Though he felt a surge of defiance, he understood that his grandfather was right. At this moment, it was the best choice.
---
Outside the door, Jing Lan listened to the conversation between her grandfather and Jing Shen, her heart filled with guilt and anger.
She felt guilty because this situation had been caused by her actions.
She was angry that her grandfather would force Jing Shen to divorce Chen Li.
Since childhood, she had harbored a secret crush on Jing Shen. In her eyes, he was everything—her world.
At the last business banquet, when Jing Shen was humiliated, it broke her heart. She vowed then to avenge him.
That was why she had contacted a friend she met while studying abroad. Through this friend, she got to know Professional Killer K.
Her initial plan was to eliminate Gu Jingchen and Li Xue. But unexpectedly, K had failed and even made off with her payment.
Jing Lan's hands were balled into fists.
She felt an intense hatred boiling within her.
Yet, there was nothing she could say. She couldn't let anyone know that it was she who had hired someone to kill Gu Jingchen and Li Xue.

The Xu Family.
The eldest son of the Xu Family, Xu Zhiming, came to visit. He looked at Old Master Jing and said, "Old Master Jing, it's been a long time."
Old Master Jing replied, "Xu Zhiming, indeed it has."
Xu Zhiming smiled and continued, "I'm here this time to discuss a collaboration with you."
Old Master Jing raised an eyebrow, "What kind of collaboration are you proposing?"
Xu Zhiming leaned closer to Old Master Jing's ear and whispered a few words.
Old Master Jing squinted his eyes, "You want to…"
Xu Zhiming smiled again, "I merely wish to present you with a gift."
Old Master Jing scrutinized him, "Why would you want to do that?"
Xu Zhiming replied with a grin, "Of course, it's for the Xu Family."
Old Master Jing looked at him skeptically, "Are you really so kind-hearted?"
Xu Zhiming chuckled softly, "Whether I am or not, Old Master Jing will find out soon enough."
With that, he pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Old Master Jing.
Old Master Jing took it and glanced at it, his eyes lighting up immediately.
Xu Zhiming observed him closely, "Gu Jingchen is going on a business trip to Country Y. Here’s his travel itinerary along with his girlfriend's."
Old Master Jing stared at him in surprise, "Where did you get this?"
Xu Zhiming smiled again, "That’s something you don’t need to worry about."
Old Master Jing nodded slowly, "Alright, I agree to your proposal."
Xu Zhiming beamed, "Then I'll await good news from you."
…
In the villa.
Li Xue looked at Gu Jingchen and said, "You have a fever."
Gu Jingchen replied dismissively, "I'm fine."
Li Xue frowned, "You’re running a fever; how can you be fine?"
Gu Jingchen smiled lightly, "I really am okay."
Li Xue insisted, "You need to lie down right now."
Gu Jingchen met her gaze firmly, "I’m really fine."
Li Xue glared at him. "Lie down."
Gu Jingchen, feeling helpless, had no choice but to lie on the bed.
Li Xue took a damp towel and began to wipe his body. Earlier, when he was taking a shower, some water had seeped into the bandage, causing the wound to become infected.
As she wiped him down, she muttered, "How can you be so careless at your age?"
Gu Jingchen looked at her. "I'm sorry."
Li Xue stared back. "What are you apologizing for?"
Gu Jingchen replied, "It's my fault."
Li Xue rolled her eyes at him. "Just knowing that is enough."
Gu Jingchen looked at her earnestly. "Please don't be angry."
Li Xue shot back, "Shut up."
Immediately, Gu Jingchen obediently closed his mouth.
Once she finished wiping him down, Li Xue tossed the towel into the basin and turned to leave.
Gu Jingchen watched her retreating figure, a slight smile tugging at his lips.
...
Li Xue went downstairs and called Assistant Wang.
On the phone, she explained the situation to him.
Assistant Wang quickly responded, "I'll bring a doctor over right now."
After hanging up, Li Xue waited in the living room for half an hour. Finally, Assistant Wang arrived with the doctor.
The doctor immediately attended to Gu Jingchen's wound and prescribed medication.
Assistant Wang promptly sent the house staff away.
He looked at Li Xue and said, "Miss Li, thank you for your help."
Li Xue replied, "It's no trouble."
Assistant Wang smiled. "Then I'll take my leave."
Li Xue nodded. "You can go now."
After Assistant Wang left, Li Xue took the medication prescribed by the doctor and headed upstairs.
She entered the bedroom and looked at Gu Jingchen. "Time to take your medicine."
Gu Jingchen looked at her, "Did you send them all away?"
Li Xue nodded, "Yes."
Gu Jingchen continued to gaze at her, "Why didn't you leave?"
Li Xue met his eyes, "If I leave, who will take care of you?"
Gu Jingchen replied, "You could leave too."
Li Xue glared at him, "Shut up."
Gu Jingchen chuckled softly, "I won't say anything more."
Li Xue handed him the medicine.
He took the medicine and then looked at her, "I'm tired."
Li Xue responded, "Then go to sleep."
Gu Jingchen said, "You should sleep too."
Li Xue replied, "I'm not tired yet."
Gu Jingchen suggested, "Wait until I fall asleep before you do."
Li Xue agreed, "Okay."
Gu Jingchen closed his eyes and soon fell asleep.
Li Xue watched him for a moment before quietly leaving the room.
……
The next morning, Li Xue woke up and went to the kitchen to make breakfast.
She brought the breakfast to the bedroom and placed it on the table.
Gu Jingchen was still asleep.
Li Xue walked to the bedside and gently nudged him.
Gu Jingchen opened his eyes.
Li Xue said, "It's time for breakfast."
Gu Jingchen looked at her, "I feel much better."
Li Xue smiled, "That's good."
Gu Jingchen asked, "Did you take care of me all night?"
Li Xue nodded, "Yes."
Gu Jingchen looked at her with gratitude, "Thank you for your hard work."
Li Xue smiled and said, "It's not hard at all."
Gu Jingchen looked at her and asked, "Why are you so good to me?"
Li Xue replied, "Because I like you."
Gu Jingchen was taken aback.
Li Xue continued, "I like you, so I want to treat you well."
Gu Jingchen looked at her and asked, "Is what you said... true?"
Li Xue nodded, "Yes."
Gu Jingchen gazed at her, "Do you really like me?"
Li Xue affirmed, "Yes."
Gu Jingchen pressed on, "Why do you like me?"
Li Xue chuckled softly, "I don't know; I just do."
Gu Jingchen inquired further, "What exactly do you like about me?"
Li Xue smiled again, "I like everything about you."
Gu Jingchen looked at her in disbelief, "Is that... true?"
Li Xue nodded again, "Yes."
Gu Jingchen asked cautiously, "You wouldn't lie to me, would you?"
Li Xue shook her head, "I would never lie to you."
Gu Jingchen insisted, "Then promise me you'll never lie to me."
Li Xue nodded earnestly, "I will never lie to you."
Gu Jingchen continued, "So in the future... will you always be good to me?"
Li Xue nodded confidently, "I will always be good to you."
Gu Jingchen looked hopeful and asked, "Then in the future... can you only be good to me?"
Li Xue hesitated for a moment, then said, "I..."
Gu Jingchen pressed gently, "Are you unwilling?"
Li Xue met his gaze and replied, "I am willing."
Gu Jingchen urged softly, "Then in the future... can you only be good to me? Please?"
Li Xue looked at him and said firmly, "Okay."
That evening, Li Xue returned to her dormitory. The room was empty, devoid of any presence. She sighed and lay down on her bed, staring at the ceiling as Gu Jingchen's face floated into her mind. Taking out her phone, she looked at the pictures stored within. In one of them, Gu Jingchen was gazing at her.
As she studied the photo, a sweet feeling filled her heart. Silently, she promised herself, "Gu Jingchen, don’t worry, I will always take good care of you."
The next morning, Li Xue had just woken up when she received a call from her younger brother, Li Jin. He sounded very upset on the other end of the line. "I’m sick," he said.
Upon hearing this, Li Xue immediately replied, "Just wait for me; I’ll be there right away." Li Jin lived in an apartment outside the school.
Without wasting any time, Li Xue got out of bed and took a taxi to his apartment. She took out her keys and opened the door. Li Jin was lying on the bed, his face pale.
Li Xue rushed over and touched his forehead. It was burning hot. "You have a fever," she said with concern.
He looked up at her and said, "Sister, I feel really awful."
"You wait here; I’ll take you to the hospital," she insisted.
"I don’t want to move," he replied weakly.
"You have to go to the hospital," she urged him firmly.
"Really, I feel terrible," he said again.
"Just hang in there; I’ll get you to the hospital," she reassured him.
