Rural Secrets 3: Night Shift Taxi

This incident happened in 2007 in Shandong Province, Heze City, Shan County, during the time I was driving a taxi. 0

That night, I was waiting by the roadside for a fare when a young man in his twenties approached. As soon as he got in the car, he asked to go to the factory near Cai Xu Village. 0

Cai Xu Village wasn't too far from the county town, but it was quite remote, with only that one factory around. 0

As I drove, I thought about striking up a conversation with the young man, but he barely spoke and seemed indifferent. There was an inexplicable gloom about him that made me feel uneasy. 0

Fortunately, there weren't many pedestrians or vehicles on the road at night, and before long, I dropped him off near the factory. 0

The factory was shrouded in darkness, but judging by the young man's demeanor, he seemed familiar with the place. He got out and walked straight into the factory. 0

I figured he must be working the night shift there and didn't think much of it. 0

Just then, my stomach suddenly started acting up, so I hurried over to a small grove across from the factory to take care of it. 0

As I was just about to pull up my pants, I faintly heard a woman's voice calling for help. 0

I quickly finished up and looked around, but aside from the sounds of insects and the wind, everything was silent. The woman's cries had vanished without a trace. 0

At that moment, I thought I might have misheard and drove back to the county town without giving it much thought. 0

The next night, I was back at my usual spot waiting for fares when a woman approached wanting a ride. I quickly welcomed her into the car and casually asked where she wanted to go. She said she needed to go to Cai Xu Village. 0

I found it strange that two nights in a row someone wanted to go to Cai Xu Village. It seemed like I would be returning empty again. Though reluctant, I started the car and headed toward Cai Xu Village. 0

As fate would have it, she got out at exactly the same spot where I'd dropped off the young man yesterday. I figured she must also be working the night shift there. 0

Oddly enough, on the third night, while waiting in my car again, guess who got in? It was the same woman from yesterday, asking once more to go to Cai Xu Village. 0

Having seen her two nights in a row made me take notice of her. 0

I glanced at her through the rearview mirror and noticed that her complexion was not good; she looked a bit pale and had a strange, sickly hue to her face. 0

During the drive, I tried to make small talk with her, even kindly reminding her that the place was quite remote and it wasn't safe for a woman to be out alone at night. 0

But she completely ignored me. I could only chuckle at my own helplessness and drop her off at her destination. 0

The next day, while I was having lunch at home, a news report on TV nearly gave me a heart attack. I almost wet my pants. 0

The news said that on July 13th, a woman's body was found in a field outside the factory in Cai Xu Village. After investigation, it turned out to be a brutal murder case, and the victim was none other than the woman who had ridden in my cab for two consecutive nights. 0

The police caught the murderer based on clues left at the scene. Guess who it was? It was the man who had taken my cab on the first night. 0

This really freaked me out. The girl had clearly died on July 13th, but she had been in my car on the 14th and 15th. 0

What exactly had I picked up? 0

The more I thought about it, the more terrified I became. At first, I considered taking a few days off, but as a taxi driver, I earned quite a bit each day. Gritting my teeth, I decided to tough it out and keep driving. 0

But as the saying goes, "What you fear will come to pass!" 0

That night, I deliberately parked my car in another area to wait for passengers. But guess what? I ran into that woman again; she still wanted to go to Cai Xu Village. 0

I was terrified inside but didn’t dare offend her. Reluctantly, I started the engine. 0

All the way there, my heart raced as I wondered if she was going to cause me trouble. How would I beg for mercy? The more I thought about it, the more scared I became, constantly sneaking glances at her through the rearview mirror. 0

She sat there like a statue, completely still and expressionless. 0

As we approached the factory in Cai Xu Village, I was so frightened that I barely dared to breathe. All I could do was hope she would get out of the car quickly. 0

At that moment, the woman handed me a piece of money from behind. When I looked at it, my mind went blank—it was Hell Money! 0

I was so scared I nearly wet my pants. Just then, the woman took the Hell Money back, looking a bit embarrassed, saying she had taken the wrong one and that this Hell Money was meant to be burned for her sister. 0

She then told me she had a twin sister who had an accident here a few days ago. She came to pay her respects and asked me to wait for her for a while since she needed to finish her ritual before heading back. 0

Watching her behavior, she didn’t seem like a ghost at all. The key was that I was terrified and didn’t dare refuse; I could only nod in agreement. 0

The woman stood in the field with yellow paper and Hell Money, burning them while muttering something under her breath. 0

It suddenly dawned on me that I had been scaring myself all night. I lit a cigarette, trying to calm myself down. 0

After about half an hour, the woman returned to the car, repeatedly apologizing for making me wait. I felt relieved and started chatting with her. 0

But as we talked, when I mentioned, “You sisters must have a really good relationship; otherwise, you wouldn’t come to see her three nights in a row,” the woman looked surprised and said she had just returned from out of town today and this was her first time coming to pay respects to her sister. 0

At that moment, I thought she was joking or trying to scare me. But when I looked closely at her expression, my heart began to race again. 0

Her reaction definitely wasn’t a joke. My heart sank back into my throat, and I had no idea how I managed to drive the car back. 0

Even now, I still can’t figure out who those two times were for. 0
