Chen Li was nearly frantic in the Womb; her worthless father was truly unbearable!
Shen Wanzhou took a deep breath, forcing back the tears in her eyes, and coldly said, "Chen Yuantu, we are husband and wife. I believe I have done nothing to wrong you. If I were to have your child, wouldn’t you want to protect us? Instead, you want to drive us to our deaths just to please that wretched woman. Has your conscience been eaten by dogs?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Chen Yuantu's expression changed dramatically, a hint of malice flickering in his eyes.
"Impudent!" Chen Yuantu slammed his hand on the table, causing the teacups to jump. "If it weren't for your background, do you think this Lord would have married you? A crude woman who can only serve tea has no right to shout at me!"
Shen Wanzhou felt as if she had been struck by lightning, staring incredulously at the man before her. The once gentle and considerate husband now seemed so foreign and heartless.
"You," Shen Wanzhou's voice trembled, "you didn’t say that back then."
"Back then is back then; now is now!" Chen Yuantu interrupted impatiently. "This Lord is a Marquis now; how could I be dragged down by a wilted flower like you?!"
"Wilted flower?" Shen Wanzhou forced a bitter smile, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I sacrificed most of my dowry to help you cultivate and become someone great. Now that you have achieved fame and title as a Marquis, can’t you leave just a little of my dowry for me? I carry your child!"
Chen Yuantu sneered, gently caressing Xu Yan'er’s belly with tenderness in his eyes. "This Lord's child is in Yan'er's womb; yours is nothing but a bastard."
"You!" Shen Wanzhou was seething with rage but knew she was outmatched against this pair of scoundrels. Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to calm down. "Chen Yuantu, are you not afraid that we will seek justice from the General's residence for this?"
At her words, a glint of murderous intent flashed in Chen Yuantu's eyes. "Seek justice? That depends on whether you can even leave the Wuding Marquisate!"
"So, you’re not planning to hand over my dowry willingly?"
Shen Wanzhou was startled but understood that Chen Yuantu's cruelty was not mere words. Her tense defiance finally crumbled, her voice softening into a plea. "Marquis, even if you dislike my child, he is still your flesh and blood! Once I leave the Marquisate, I can only rely on what little dowry remains to raise him. Can’t you give him a chance at life?"
"A chance at life?" Chen Yuantu replied coldly. "How could this child compare to the one Yan'er will bear for me?"
He looked at Shen Wanzhou as if she were already dead. Moreover, as long as he could ensure both mother and child met their end, the dowry would still belong to him.
Shen Wanzhou trembled all over and sat down on the ground in shock. The last glimmer of hope had been extinguished.
Chen Yuantu had completely lost his conscience.
Now, the most important thing was how to protect her child. "I promise you," Shen Wanzhou gritted her teeth and pulled out an exquisite sachet from her bosom—something she kept close at all times. Inside were her dowry list and personal seal. "Let me and my child go."
Chen Yuantu snatched the fragrant pouch, opened it for a glance, and a greedy expression immediately appeared on his face.
As expected from a family of warriors, the items in this storage pouch were worth a fortune, even just one of them! He tucked the pouch away into his clothing, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Someone, take the lady back to her room to pack. Tomorrow morning, she will be sent back to the General's residence!"
Shen Wanzhou was taken aback and instinctively asked, "Why wait until tomorrow? I want to leave now!"
Chen Yuantu let out a cold laugh, his tone dripping with unmasked sarcasm. "Don't worry, tomorrow morning, I will send guards to escort you back to the General's residence. We wouldn't want anything happening on the road that would cause the General's residence to come looking for me."
Shen Wanzhou was startled, her heart racing.
His words sounded grandiose, but upon closer inspection, they were laced with something sinister. Why send guards? What could they possibly do? Was Chen Yuantu planning to kill them on the way?
The thought that suddenly sprang up in her mind made Shen Wanzhou's face turn pale. Her lips trembled slightly, but she couldn't utter a word.
As an unborn child, Chen Li was nearly bursting with rage in the womb! This so-called father was truly a unique kind of scum!
Shen Qingyue secretly despised Chen Yuantu's actions and thought about how unfortunate her mother was to encounter such a scumbag dad! If she were in her prime, she would have done everything to crush this kind of man!
Unfortunately, she was just an unborn baby now, helplessly watching everything unfold without any means to intervene! Was she really going to be erased again before even being reborn?
Shen Wanzhou glared fiercely at Chen Yuantu, her eyes filled with a hatred that wished for nothing more than to see him suffer.
But Chen Yuantu seemed completely unfazed; he provocatively curled his lips into a smirk that was full of malice and calculation.
Taking a deep breath, Shen Wanzhou struggled to suppress her fear and anger and said coldly, "You are right, Marquis. It was my oversight."
Her hands clenched tightly under her wide sleeves, her nails digging deep into her flesh, yet she felt no pain. She knew that confronting Chen Yuantu head-on would only lead to an even more dangerous situation. She had to remain calm in order to find an opportunity to escape!
Chen Yuantu impatiently nodded, urging her to leave.
Shen Wanzhou lowered her head, concealing the hatred in her eyes, and slowly exited the room. As soon as she stepped outside, darkness clouded her vision, and she nearly fainted. Fortunately, her maid, Xiao Cui, was quick to catch her.
"Madam, are you alright?" Xiao Cui asked with concern.
Shen Wanzhou shook her head, signaling that she was fine. She leaned on Xiao Cui's arm and took slow steps toward her courtyard. With each step, Shen Wanzhou could feel Chen Yuantu's malice wrapping around her like a cold, slimy snake's tongue, suffocating her.
Once back in her room, Shen Wanzhou collapsed onto the bed, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. She felt lost and uncertain about what to do next or whether she and her child had a future.
Seeing Shen Wanzhou in despair broke Xiao Cui's heart, but she didn't know how to comfort her. "Madam, please don't do this; it will harm your health," Xiao Cui choked out. "You still have the Young Master and Young Miss. You must pull yourself together!"
The mention of the Young Master and Young Miss made Shen Wanzhou gently caress her belly, where the child she carried—her and Chen Yuantu's child—was growing. This child was the family she longed to see.
For the sake of her child, she could not give up! She had to survive and escape this dungeon with her baby!
