Zhang Qi and the Monkey Cat crouched as they entered the ancient tomb. A pungent odor filled the narrow passageway, a mix of decayed wood and sharp chemical scents that invaded their nostrils.
The walls glimmered with eerie phosphorescence, casting faint light that elongated their shadows, projecting them onto the moss-covered walls adorned with mysterious patterns, resembling clawing monsters.
"Bro, this smell is unbearable; it's giving me a headache," the Monkey complained, wrinkling his nose.
"Just bear with it. This old tomb has been sealed for years; a strange odor is to be expected," Zhang Qi replied, though he too found the stench quite unpleasant.
Their heartbeats echoed in the silent corridor, each step feeling like an exhausting effort, their breaths becoming rapid and heavy.
In those days, rural folks rarely encountered such enclosed and dark environments, let alone ventured into an ancient tomb.
Both Zhang Qi and the Monkey were filled with tension and unease, feeling a chill creeping down their spines.
As they delved deeper, strange sounds began to emerge—faint yet distinct—seeming to come from afar, or perhaps whispering right beside them. The noises resembled soft weeping or the creaking of old doors swaying in the wind, sending shivers down their spines.
The Monkey nervously clutched Zhang Qi's shirt hem and trembled as he said, "Bro, this place feels cursed. Should we really be here? That sound... could it be something unclean?"
Zhang Qi forced himself to stay calm and reassured him, "Don't be afraid; I'm here. We can't scare ourselves. It might just be the wind triggering some mechanism."
Yet his palms were already slick with sweat, making his grip on the tools slippery. He struggled to steady himself, relying on his limited historical knowledge and Tomb Raiding Legend to find clues or patterns in their surroundings, but all he faced was endless darkness and uncertainty.
At that moment, they heard a faint "tick-tock" sound, like dripping water, which seemed particularly pronounced in the stillness of the tomb.
"Brother, what is that sound? It can't be some kind of trap, can it?" The monkey's eyes widened in fear as he asked.
Zhang Qi also felt a surge of tension. He stopped in his tracks, listening intently to the source of the noise while shining his flashlight around. "Don't panic. Let's see if there's anything unusual nearby."
The two of them cautiously scanned their surroundings and noticed some damp marks on the walls of the tomb passage, as if something was seeping out from the stone.
"Could this be some kind of poison?" The monkey took a step back in terror.
"Doesn't seem like it. Stop jumping to conclusions. Let's just move slowly and be careful," Zhang Qi replied, though he felt uncertain himself.
They continued to advance through the tomb passage at a slow pace. Not long after, the monkey suddenly exclaimed, "Ah!"
Zhang Qi quickly asked, "What happened?" The monkey pointed at the ground and said, "Brother, look at these footprints!"
Zhang Qi shone his flashlight down and saw some strange footprints on the ground. They didn't resemble human prints; they were elongated with sharp-looking toes.
"What... what kind of creature left these?" The monkey's voice trembled.
Zhang Qi crouched down for a closer look, furrowing his brow. "I don't know either. Could there be other living beings in this ancient tomb?"
At that moment, they heard a hissing sound, as if something was moving in the shadows. The monkey clung tightly to Zhang Qi's arm, saying, "Brother, I'm scared. Let's go back."
Zhang Qi gritted his teeth. "We've come this far; it would be a shame to turn back now. It might just be some small animals. Don't worry; we'll be careful."
However, as they pressed on, the hissing grew louder, seeming to echo right beside them.
Suddenly, a dark shadow darted out from a side passage, startling the monkey, who let out a loud scream. Zhang Qi was also taken aback, nearly dropping the flashlight.
As they focused their eyes, they realized it was just a large rat, measuring nearly half a meter long. Its eyes glinted ominously in the beam of the flashlight. After giving the two a quick glance, it scurried away.
"It was just a big rat; you nearly scared me to death," the monkey said, patting his chest, still shaken.
"That rat is enormous. It seems this ancient tomb is indeed not simple," Zhang Qi sighed in relief, though his vigilance remained unshaken.
They continued to move cautiously along the tomb passage, each step filled with trepidation, fearing they might trigger some deadly trap.
