As they entered the tomb chamber, they were stunned by the sight before them.
In the center of the chamber lay a massive stone sarcophagus, its lid covered in strange runes that seemed to pulsate with life. In the dim light of their flashlight, the runes flickered with an eerie glow, as if whispering ancient secrets.
Surrounding the sarcophagus were exquisite artifacts—ceramics and bronze items—that, despite being eroded by time, still radiated an alluring sheen, showcasing their former glory.
In the resource-scarce 1980s, if these artifacts could be exchanged for money, they would be enough to provide a wealthy life. The thought sparked a glimmer of greed in both Zhang Qi and the monkey's eyes.
Just as they approached the sarcophagus, a sudden dull thud echoed through the chamber, as if something within was striking against the coffin.
The sound hit them like a hammer on their hearts. The monkey turned pale with fear and exclaimed, "Brother, there must be something in that coffin! Let's get out of here!"
But Zhang Qi was captivated by the runes on the sarcophagus. He felt that these symbols concealed great secrets, and his curiosity mixed with a thirst for wealth momentarily overshadowed his fear.
"Don't panic; it might be a great treasure. Let's take a look," Zhang Qi said, though his voice trembled involuntarily.
At that moment, a withered hand shot out from beneath the sarcophagus and swiftly grasped the monkey's ankle. The monkey screamed in terror and struggled desperately. "Brother, help me!"
The fingers of that hand were thin and long like dried branches, but its nails were sharp as knives, digging into the monkey's flesh.
Zhang Qi hurriedly swung his shovel at the hand but found it as hard as iron; sparks flew as the shovel struck it.
"What kind of cursed thing is this!" Zhang Qi cursed loudly, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
In sheer terror, the monkey kicked and flailed wildly, his eyes wide with despair and helplessness.
"Brother, think of something quickly! I don't want to die here!"
Zhang Qi dropped the shovel and grabbed the monkey's arm, using all his strength to pull him back.
"Don't be afraid, I'll get you out!"
In the struggle, the monkey's shoe was yanked off, but he didn't care about his cold feet as he scrambled behind Zhang Qi.
"Brother, there are Zongzi in this tomb; we're really no match for them," the monkey said with a quivering voice.
Zhang Qi was also panicking, but he knew he couldn't just give up.
He took out a bag of salt he had prepared earlier and threw it at the withered hand.
In the Tomb Raiding Legend, salt could deal with some malevolent entities. As the grains hit the hand, they made a sizzling sound, and the hand seemed to tremble slightly but did not let go.
"This doesn't work?" Zhang Qi's eyes widened in terror.
At that moment, the temperature in the tomb dropped sharply, and their breaths turned to white frost.
The air around them felt as if it had solidified, making it hard to breathe.
"Brother, I feel like my feet are about to freeze off," the monkey said, stomping his feet while chattering his teeth.
Zhang Qi tore off his scarf and threw it to the monkey. "Wrap your feet up first, don't let them freeze."
Just as they were at a loss, the runes on the stone coffin suddenly blazed with light, illuminating the entire tomb chamber.
In the glow, they saw a blurry figure flickering above the coffin. It resembled an ancient warrior, clad in armor, wielding a long sword, with a fierce expression.
"Is this... the spirit of the tomb owner?" The monkey was so frightened that it collapsed onto the ground.
Zhang Qi felt his legs weaken as well, but he steeled himself and shouted, "No matter what you are, don't think you can scare us!"
The figure seemed to hear Zhang Qi's words and slowly drifted toward them.
Zhang Qi and the monkey clung tightly to each other, filled with despair.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light, and the figure vanished.
Immediately after, the dry hand beneath the coffin retracted.
"What... what just happened?" The monkey's eyes widened in disbelief at what had just occurred.
"I don't know either, but I feel like we can't stay here any longer."
Zhang Qi picked up a tool from the ground and pulled the monkey along as they hurried deeper into the ancient tomb. Behind them, the chamber felt like a demon with its mouth wide open, ready to swallow them whole.
They stumbled along the narrow tomb passage, too frightened to look back. The Monkey limped along, muttering, "Brother, what kind of misfortune have we gotten ourselves into? If I had known, I wouldn't have come to this cursed place."
Zhang Qi frowned, keeping a wary eye on their surroundings while trying to reassure him. "It's no use regretting now; we need to find the exit quickly."
Not long after, they heard a faint "tick-tock" sound, like water dripping, but in the eerie silence of the ancient tomb, it felt particularly sinister.
"Brother, do you hear that? What if there's more danger?" The Monkey nervously grabbed Zhang Qi's arm.
Zhang Qi perked up his ears to listen closely, feeling uncertain himself. "Don't worry about it; just keep moving."
As they ventured deeper, the passage became increasingly rugged, with walls oozing a foul-smelling slime.
"This smell is unbearable! Brother, I can't take it anymore," the Monkey said, covering his nose.
Zhang Qi pulled a rag from his pocket and handed it to the Monkey. "Cover your nose with this; just bear with it for now."
Just as they turned a corner, they suddenly caught a glimpse of a shadow darting past ahead.
"Who’s there?" Zhang Qi shouted, his voice echoing through the passage.
No one answered; only the "tick-tock" sound seemed to grow more urgent.
