The monkey clutched tightly to Zhang Qi, trembling. "Brother, is there a ghost?"
Zhang Qi took a deep breath, gripping the shovel in his hand. "Don't be afraid. Whether it's a person or a ghost, we need to check it out."
They cautiously moved toward the direction where the figure had disappeared.
When they reached the entrance of a tomb chamber, they noticed a faint light flickering inside.
Zhang Qi signaled for the monkey to be quiet as they quietly approached the tomb's entrance and peeked inside.
They saw an old man in tattered clothes crouched on the ground, holding a flashlight and carefully studying the murals on the wall.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Zhang Qi asked warily.
The old man jumped at the sudden voice, nearly dropping his flashlight.
Turning around, he saw Zhang Qi and the monkey. A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.
"It doesn't matter who I am. What matters is how you two young fools dared to enter this perilous ancient tomb," the old man said slowly.
Zhang Qi studied the old man, sensing he wasn't an ordinary tomb raider. "We're here to find something. What about you?"
The old man scoffed. "Do you think the treasures in this tomb are easy to take? There are immense secrets and dangers hidden within that you cannot handle."
The monkey couldn't help but retort, "You old man, stop trying to scare us. We'll handle our own affairs."
The old man stood up and walked toward them. "Did you encounter anything strange in that chamber just now?"
Zhang Qi recalled their earlier experience, feeling a shiver of fear. "So what if we did?"
The old man sighed. "That was just the beginning. If you continue deeper, you'll only face more terrifying things. I advise you to leave while you still can."
Zhang Qi hesitated for a moment. He knew the old man might be right, but he was unwilling to return empty-handed.
"We can't leave; we need what’s here," Zhang Qi said firmly.
The old man looked at him and shook his head. "You really don't know when to quit. Fine, since you won't listen, let me tell you this: there are many traps and mechanisms in the tomb ahead. One wrong move, and you could lose your life. If you manage to get through alive, you might find what you're looking for, but I can assure you, that thing will make you regret ever coming to this world."
With that, the old man turned and walked away, quickly disappearing into the darkness.
Zhang Qi exchanged a glance with the monkey, filled with doubt and unease.
"Brother, do you think what that old man said is true?" the monkey asked.
"Whether it's true or not, we've come this far; there's no turning back now," Zhang Qi gritted his teeth and replied.
They steeled themselves and continued deeper into the ancient tomb.
In the eerie and terrifying tomb chamber, Zhang Qi and the monkey were engulfed in fear.
Suddenly, the monkey let out a pained groan, his body seeming to lose all strength as he fell backward.
"Monkey!" Zhang Qi shouted in panic, rushing to catch him but nearly stumbling himself in his haste.
He tightly embraced the monkey and laid him flat on the ground, only then noticing how pale the monkey's face had become, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as his body trembled slightly.
Zhang Qi's heart raced as he shakily rolled up the monkey's sleeve. What he saw made him gasp in horror. The arm where Zongzi had grabbed him was now pitch black, as if the darkness seeped from deep within his skin, rapidly spreading along the veins of his arm.
The once healthy skin was being eroded by this strange blackness, and a faint putrid smell emanated from the wound, becoming increasingly pungent in the enclosed chamber.
"What... what do we do?" Zhang Qi panicked, his voice trembling with fear.
But he knew that he could not lose his composure at this moment; the monkey's life depended on him. He forced himself to suppress the panic within, straining to carry the unconscious monkey on his back, moving step by step toward the exit of the ancient tomb.
Zhang Qi trudged through the vast snowy expanse of Daxing'anling, burdened by the weight of the unconscious monkey.
Snowflakes fell like goose feathers, swirling in the air, while a biting cold wind howled past, as if countless icy knives were slicing across his face.
He was anxious and stumbled, his steps uneven as he hurried toward the small town.
The winter in Daxing'anling was already bone-chilling, but at that moment, all that filled Zhang Qi's heart was worry for the monkey; the cold seemed unable to penetrate his overwhelming anxiety.
Before long, Zhang Qi arrived at the town clinic. The dim yellow light inside cast a gloomy atmosphere, mingling with a sharp scent of disinfectant.
An elderly doctor with graying hair and reading glasses approached him, showing signs of age and fatigue etched on his face. The old doctor furrowed his brow, gently lifting the monkey's eyelid to examine him while muttering, "What happened here?"
Zhang Qi anxiously replied, "Doctor, my brother was suddenly knocked out by something in the ancient tomb. You have to save him!"
The old doctor shook his head and said helplessly, "Our little clinic has limited equipment. I'll prescribe some antipyretics and anti-inflammatory medication for now, but you need to hurry to the big hospital in the county."
Without daring to delay even a moment, Zhang Qi rushed off with the monkey toward the county hospital.
The county hospital was bustling with people and noise, but all Zhang Qi could think about was the monkey's safety; he paid no mind to the chaos around him. The monkey was taken into various examination rooms for blood tests and other checks. Zhang Qi paced back and forth in the corridor like an ant on a hot pan, repeatedly murmuring, "Monkey, you must be okay."
