Just as everyone let out a sigh of relief, Zhang Qi suddenly realized that Xiao Douzi was missing.
His heart sank, as if an invisible hand had gripped him tightly, and an ominous premonition surged through him like a tidal wave.
His eyes widened in an instant, veins bulging on his forehead, and he anxiously shouted at the top of his lungs, "Xiao Douzi! Xiao Douzi! Where are you?"
The sound echoed wildly in the empty, eerie tomb passage, crashing against the cold stone walls and bouncing back, but only the unsettling echoes responded to him. Each reverberation felt like a heavy blow to Zhang Qi's chest.
Zhang Qi's face turned pale as paper, his eyes filled with self-reproach and regret. He stomped his foot hard, berating himself relentlessly, "It's all my fault! It's all because of my carelessness! I was so focused on listening to Professor Li talk about those murals that I didn't keep an eye on this kid! I'm such a fool!"
Lao Hu frowned deeply, worry etched into the lines of his face. He scanned the area like a searchlight sweeping through the tomb passage while trying to reassure everyone, "Don't panic; let's look for him. Xiao Douzi is clever; he might have wandered off to explore some side path. This kid is curious; he probably found something interesting and went to check it out."
Yet despite his words, there was an undeniable hint of anxiety in his voice, trembling slightly like the cold wind that seeped into their hearts in the tomb.
A Ling crouched down gracefully and nimbly examined the footprints on the ground, her gaze so focused it seemed she could bore a hole into the earth. Her slender fingers traced the outlines of the prints gently as she murmured to herself, "These footprints get messy here, as if something disturbed them. Look, there are some strange scratches nearby; they don't seem natural. Could something have pulled at Xiao Douzi here?"
Professor Li adjusted his glasses, and the eyes behind the lenses sparkled with seriousness. He said gravely, "This ancient tomb is filled with traps, like a pit full of spikes. It’s too dangerous for Xiao Douzi to be alone. We need to find him quickly and be careful not to trigger any other mechanisms. Every step feels like stepping on a tiger's tail; one misstep could spell disaster for us all."
In an era where communication relied heavily on shouting and lighting depended on a few flashlights, searching became even more challenging.
Zhang Qi was frantic, darting around like a headless fly. Memories of Xiao Douzi's innocent smile flooded his mind, recalling how the child’s eyes sparkled with curiosity at new things. He regretted not paying more attention.
"Xiao Douzi, please don’t scare me!" Zhang Qi's voice cracked with emotion; it echoed hauntingly in the silent tomb passage like a wounded lone wolf lamenting its fate.
"Lao Hu" shouted from the side, "Let's follow this main tomb passage first. He might be nearby. This main passage is like a big tree trunk, and those side paths are like branches. We should search the trunk thoroughly before looking into the branches."
After searching for a long time, they hadn't seen a single trace.
At that moment, one of "Wang Batian's" subordinates, named "Gou Sheng," was hiding in the shadows, watching everything unfold. His shifty eyes glimmered in the darkness, and a smug smile crept across his face as he sneaked back to report to "Wang Batian," "Boss, one of their kids is missing, and now they're all in a panic. Those adults are like ants on a hot pan, running around frantically."
"Wang Batian" sat on a large stone with his legs crossed, a cruel smile appearing on his face. "Hmph, just right. They're in disarray; we can seize the opportunity to take them all down and grab that treasure while we're at it. This is a chance given to us by heaven; we can't let it slip away."
"Zhang Qi" and the others were still anxiously searching, each step filled with dread. "Where could that child have gone? What if he fell into some trap? The traps in this ancient tomb are insidious, like hidden demons waiting to devour the careless."
Professor Li said worriedly. "A Ling" silently prayed nearby, "I hope this cursed tomb doesn't harm Xiao Douzi. This place feels so malevolent; it's filled with an evil aura. Xiao Douzi is so small; I hope he doesn't get hurt by it."
Suddenly, "Lao Hu" spotted something at a fork in the path. The spark of hope ignited in his previously dull eyes as he shouted, "Come here! There's a small path with signs that someone has walked through. The footprints are a bit chaotic, but they look like Xiao Douzi's."
Everyone hurried over. Without hesitation, "Zhang Qi" dashed into the small path as if ready to confront someone head-on, muttering, "Xiao Douzi, Uncle is coming to save you! You mustn't get into any trouble! If anything happens to you, how am I supposed to live?"
They cautiously advanced along the small path, a foul stench permeating the tomb passage as if something had been rotting in the darkness for ages.
"Zhang Qi" gripped a shovel tightly in his hand, his knuckles whitening from the strain as his inner tension mounted.
"Lao Hu" held his shield protectively in front of him, scanning the surroundings vigilantly and not missing any corner.
"A Ling's" talisman flickered with a faint glow as she whispered incantations, seemingly praying for everyone's safety.
Professor Li followed closely behind, the beam of his flashlight flickering in the darkness, casting eerie shadows of strange murals on the walls, as if the figures within were watching them from the shadows.
"Everyone be careful, this place feels sinister," Lao Hu warned in a low voice.
Before he could finish, a faint creaking sound suddenly echoed from ahead, like an ancient mechanism slowly activating. The group's hearts raced, and their footsteps instinctively halted.
Zhang Qi swallowed nervously and said with a trembling voice, "Could it be that we've triggered another trap?"
Just then, a withered hand shot out from a crack in the wall beside them, reaching swiftly for the nearest A Ling.
