As soon as Li Xue stepped through the door, Li Jin sprang out from the shadows.
He wrapped his arms around her. "Sister, you're back."
Li Xue looked at him, startled. "What are you doing? You scared me."
Li Jin gazed at her earnestly. "Sister, I missed you."
Li Xue raised an eyebrow. "You missed me?"
He nodded. "Yeah."
Li Xue scrutinized him. "Did you get into trouble again?"
He shook his head vigorously. "No, I really missed you."
She crossed her arms, unconvinced. "I don't believe you."
"Really, Sister, I missed you," he insisted.
"What is it then?" she asked.
"I saw a guy drop you off just now," he said, his eyes narrowing.
Li Xue frowned. "So what?"
"Who is he?" Li Jin pressed.
"Why do you want to know?" she replied.
"Does he like you?" he asked, concern etched on his face.
"Why does that matter to you?" she countered.
"He doesn't deserve you," Li Jin declared.
Li Xue chuckled lightly. "How do you know?"
"I just know," he said confidently.
"You should focus on yourself," she advised.
"Are you dating him?" Li Jin asked suddenly.
"Why do you care?" she shot back.
"You can't date him," he insisted.
"Why not?" she challenged.
"I don't like him," he stated firmly.
"He doesn't need your approval," she replied.
"But Sister, I like you," he confessed suddenly.
Li Xue was taken aback.
"Sister, I like you. You can't be with other guys," he added earnestly.
Li Xue snapped back to reality and looked at him. "What are you talking about?"
Li Jin met her gaze. "I'm not talking nonsense."
She continued to stare at him. "Li Jin, I'm your sister."
He replied, "I know."
Li Xue pressed on, "Then why are you saying such foolish things?"
"I’m not saying anything foolish," he insisted.
"Li Jin, do you even know what you're saying?" she asked.
"I know," he answered.
"Do you understand what it means when you say that?" she pressed further.
"I know," he repeated.
"Then do you still dare to say it?" she challenged.
"Why wouldn't I dare to say it?" he shot back.
"Are you really clueless or just pretending?" she inquired.
"I don't know," he admitted.
With a sigh of resignation, Li Xue looked at him. "Li Jin, we are siblings."
"And so what?" he replied.
"You can't like me," she stated firmly.
"Why not?" he asked, genuinely confused.
"Because I'm your sister," she explained.
"But I really like you," he confessed.
"I don't need your affection," she said, her tone resolute.
"Why not?" he questioned again.
"Because you are my brother," she reiterated.
"What if I weren't your brother?" he probed.
"That’s impossible," she replied without hesitation.
"Why is that?" he persisted.
"Because I don't have those kinds of feelings for you," she clarified.
"Who do you have those feelings for?" he asked, curiosity piqued.
"I won't have those feelings for anyone," she stated plainly.
"Then why are you dating that guy?" he challenged.
Li Xue looked at him, "I'm not dating him."
Li Jin gazed back at her, "Then why did he bring you back?"
Li Xue replied, "He just gave me a ride home."
Li Jin insisted, "Sister, you can't date him."
Li Xue sighed in exasperation, "Can you stop making a fuss?"
Li Jin responded, "I'm not making a fuss."
With a weary sigh, Li Xue said, "I'm tired. I need to rest."
Li Jin offered, "Sister, let me walk you back to your room."
Li Xue shook her head, "No need."
Li Jin repeated, "Sister, I’ll walk you back."
Resigned, Li Xue let him escort her to her room.
After dropping her off, Li Jin hurriedly left. Li Xue closed the door and took a deep breath before sitting on the edge of her bed. Her gaze drifted through the window into the distance as she fell into deep thought. Her mind was as complex and profound as the night outside. She recalled the argument with Li Ling and Li Jin's concerns, feeling a mix of emotions swirling within her.
The next day, Li Xue arrived at the office as usual and worked tirelessly throughout the day. The pressures of work temporarily distracted her from the fractures in her family, but as quitting time approached, those worries surged back like a tide. She packed her things and hurriedly left the office.
Li Jin sent her a message: "Sister, it seems Li Ling has found a job recently and is often not home." Li Xue glanced at her phone screen and replied tersely: "Oh." She kept her response short and cold; she didn't want Li Jin to sense her unease.
Li Jin texted again: "Sister, aren't you angry?"
Li Xue replied: "What should I be angry about?" She tried to mask her emotions, but the turmoil inside her was hard to quell.
Li Jin continued: "Li Ling moved out without saying a word, and she even dared to look for a job behind your back!"
Li Xue asked: "Did you reach out to me?" Her voice trembled slightly despite her efforts to remain calm.
Li Jin answered: "Of course I did."
Li Xue pressed: "And what happened?"
Li Jin replied: "She wouldn’t let me tell you."
Li Xue said with resignation in her voice: "Then don’t tell me." She didn’t want Li Jin to get caught up in this conflict.
Li Jin questioned: "Sister, aren’t you worried?"
Li Xue responded: "What should I be worried about?" She attempted to sound strong, but the worry pricked at her heart like a thorn.
Li Jin pressed on: "What if Li Ling does something reckless?"
Li Xue asserted: "She wouldn’t dare." Her tone was firm, yet an unsettling shadow loomed over her heart.
Li Jin clarified: "I mean what if she does something?"
Li Xue replied resolutely: "If she dares to do anything outrageous, our family won’t stand by idly." There was determination in her voice; she didn’t want Li Jin to see her vulnerability.
Li Jin asked: "Sister, what do you plan to do?"
Li Xue admitted: "I haven't figured that out yet." Confusion filled her heart; she didn’t know how to confront the rifts within her family.
Li Jin: "Sister, I need to tell you something."
Li Xue: "What is it?" Her voice carried a hint of anticipation; perhaps Li Jin could provide her with some answers.
Li Jin: "I think Li Ling is acting a bit strange."
Li Xue: "What's strange about her?" Her tone was curious, as if this might be a clue to solving the problem.
Li Jin: "I can't quite put my finger on it, but she just seems really odd."
Li Xue: "Don't overthink it." She tried to reassure Li Jin, but her own doubts were growing deeper.
Li Jin: "Sister, I just feel like Li Ling has changed too much."
Li Xue: "Hasn't she always been like this?" She attempted to sound indifferent, but her heart was filled with uncertainty.
Li Jin: "But..."
Li Xue: "No buts. I have things to do, so I’ll hang up now." There was a hint of fatigue in her voice; she needed time to sort through her thoughts.
Li Jin: "Oh." His voice carried a touch of disappointment, but he understood that Li Xue needed space.
Li Xue put her phone away and walked toward the apartment. Her steps felt heavy, the burden in her heart making it hard to breathe. As she reached the entrance, she spotted a familiar black Rolls-Royce parked outside. Frowning slightly, she approached the car. Just as she reached it, the door swung open.
Gu Jingchen sat inside, looking at her. "Get in," he said, his tone commanding yet filled with concern.
Li Xue looked at him in surprise. "What are you doing here?" She hadn’t expected Gu Jingchen to show up.
Gu Jingchen met her gaze. "I missed you." His voice was gentle and firm, his eyes brimming with affection.
Li Xue pouted and walked around the car, continuing on her way. She didn’t want Gu Jingchen to see her vulnerability; she needed to face everything alone.
Seeing that she ignored him, Gu Jingchen’s expression darkened. He instructed his assistant, "Follow her." The assistant acknowledged and drove off after her. Gu Jingchen watched Li Xue’s retreating figure, his gaze deep and filled with worry.

As soon as Li Xue stepped inside her home, Li Jin sprang out from the shadows. He hugged her tightly. "Sister, you're back," he said, his voice laced with dependence; he needed Li Xue's support.
Li Xue: "What are you doing? You scared me!" Her tone held a hint of reproach, yet warmth filled her heart.
Li Jin: "Sister, I missed you." His voice was slightly whiny; he sought comfort from Li Xue.
Li Xue: "You missed me?" A smile crept into her voice; she understood that Li Jin was expressing his concern in his own way.
Li Jin: Nodding, he replied, "Yeah." His eyes were sincere; he truly missed Li Xue, needing her guidance and support.
Sighing, Li Xue realized that the cracks in their family would take time to mend, but she also knew she couldn’t give up. She patted Li Jin on the back. "Alright, let’s sit down and talk," she said firmly; they needed to face this issue together.
Nodding again, Li Jin understood that this would be a difficult conversation, but he knew he couldn’t avoid it. They walked into the living room together and sat on the sofa, beginning this challenging dialogue. Li Xue knew this was just the start; she would need more wisdom and courage to confront the fractures within their family.
