In the end, they chose a Su cuisine restaurant that was hardly suitable for a child like Yao Nian. Dishes such as Sweet and Sour Squirrel Fish, Su-style Sweet Braised Pork, Fragrant Oil Eel, and Spicy Malan Head filled the table.
Shen Du looked at these Jiangnan dishes and gradually realized that this little girl was catering to his tastes. A vague emotion surged within him, one he couldn't quite articulate.
"Well, I’ll treat today," Yao Nian said with her mouth full of braised pork, her words somewhat muffled.
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. When did they agree on that?
"I’m thanking you for taking me home last night," Yao Nian stated earnestly.
Shen Du chuckled softly but didn’t respond.
Yao Nian had never eaten Su cuisine before, but this restaurant ranked first on the popular review site, and the flavors were indeed quite good. To her surprise, she finished an entire bowl of rice.
In contrast, Shen Du didn’t pick up his chopsticks very often, which made Yao Nian even more certain that his earlier claim of not being full was just a way to downplay his appetite.
"Yao Nian?" A surprised male voice came from behind the screen.
Yao Nian turned to see a boy in a sports jersey who looked exceptionally bright and sunny—Zhou Shiyi, her high school classmate and desk mate.
During their last evening study session before the college entrance exams, this clueless boy had picked a large bouquet of chrysanthemums from somewhere and stood on the podium in front of the entire class to confess to her with tears and sincerity. Especially with that bunch of yellow chrysanthemums in his hand, anyone who didn’t know would think she was about to be buried.
That incident could definitely be included in the highlights of Yao Nian’s social embarrassment collection.
Zhou Shiyi exclaimed excitedly, "Wow! I didn’t expect to run into you here!"
His gaze shifted to Shen Du, who was sitting across from Yao Nian. "Who is this?"
Yao Nian coughed lightly and replied, "He’s my uncle."
Zhou Shiyi immediately bowed respectfully to Shen Du and said loudly, "Hello, Uncle! I’m Zhou Shiyi!"
Shen Du smiled. "Hello. Are you Yao Nian’s classmate?"
Zhou Shiyi nodded vigorously. "Not just classmates; we were desk mates for three years! We even—"
Yao Nian quickly interrupted him. "Zhou Shiyi, did you come here alone?"
"No, I came with my sister," he replied.
"Then you should hurry up," Yao Nian urged. "Don't keep your sister waiting."
"Oh, come on," Zhou Shiyi waved his hand dismissively. "We're in line; we've been waiting for half an hour. Who knew the business here was so good? If I had known, I would have preferred to eat at Chuan Xiao Yi."
Shen Du chuckled. "If you don't mind, you can sit down and eat with us."
Yao Nian immediately shot Zhou Shiyi a glare, subtly shaking her head at him.
"That sounds great!" Zhou Shiyi completely missed the warning in the girl's eyes and nodded enthusiastically. "I'll go get my sister right away!"
Yao Nian stared at his retreating figure in frustration. Did this middle schooler not understand what polite conversation meant?
Noticing Yao Nian's unnatural expression, Shen Du asked, "Do you not want to eat together?"
Inside, Yao Nian was screaming, "Isn't it a bit late to ask that now?" She forced herself to remain calm. "No, no, it's fine. Helping each other out among classmates is only natural."
Shen Du found her serious demeanor amusing and waved toward the entrance. "Waiter, please bring two more sets of utensils."
Zhou Shiyi was quick to return, followed by a well-dressed woman.
