Within half an hour, the doorbell of the villa rang.
After entering, Xu Jiayi magically laid out duck necks, fried chicken, sushi, takoyaki, and a large bag of barbecue on the coffee table.
Yao Nian's expression was hard to describe. "Is your idea of exercise a triathlon?"
"Do I not know you?" Xu Jiayi scoffed. "I had an egg for breakfast, a corn on the cob for lunch, and a rider for dinner. Besides, I came here to gossip; how could I not have side dishes?"
Yao Nian rubbed her stomach. "I can’t even eat a single kernel of corn tonight. You’ll have to handle this yourself."
"What about this?" Xu Jiayi pulled out a pack of Heineken from the bag with a flourish.
Yao Nian stared in disbelief. "Old Yao’s stash of alcohol is almost enough to rival that bar at the corner! You brought all this from so far away? Isn’t it heavy?"
"I can’t drink that foreign stuff your dad likes," Xu Jiayi said as she popped open a can, and foam immediately bubbled over the top. She tilted her head back and took a big gulp, letting out a satisfied hum. "Barbecue goes with beer; the more you drink, the better it gets!"
Yao Nian couldn’t help but laugh, but her hand instinctively reached for another can. The icy beer slid down her throat into her stomach on that summer night, bringing with it a wonderful sensation.
"So you just happened to run into Zhou Shiyi?" Xu Jiayi asked while nibbling on some gluten.
Yao Nian shot her a glance. "Why do you think after experiencing that incident, I would still want to be framed by him?"
Xu Jiayi fell back onto the sofa, laughing heartily for quite some time.
"Wait!" She suddenly looked puzzled. "Then why did you let Uncle Shen frame you?"
Yao Nian swallowed the foam in her throat. "He probably just wants to take care of me, this left-behind child."
"I’m curious; weren’t you always annoyed about dealing with elders? How old is this Uncle Shen anyway?"
Yao Nian rested her thumb on her chin. "He said he’s a whole generation older than me; it should be about right."
"Ah!" Xu Jiayi took a bite of duck neck. "At his age, if he weren’t your dad’s friend, he wouldn’t even fall into the elder category."
"Right?" Yao Nian's tone suddenly rose. "You think so too!"
Xu Jiayi looked at her suspiciously. "Why are you so excited?"
"I’m not excited at all!"
Something felt off—very off indeed.
Xu Jiayi looked her up and down, puzzled by the fact that she had someone send her home and even had dinner alone with him. That wasn't her style at all.
Yao Nian instinctively avoided her scrutinizing gaze. First of all, it wasn't a solo dinner; Zhou Shiyi and his sister were also there.
That was beyond her control, and Xu Jiayi wore a knowing expression: "Isn't that why you're feeling off tonight?"
Yao Nian's eyes widened. "What do you mean I'm feeling off?"
In the words of the boys in their class, Yao Nian had the face of a first love. During school, there were always younger and older students lurking by the classroom door just to catch a glimpse of her.
Whether it was secret crushes or bold confessions, throughout her three years of high school, Xu Jiayi had never seen Yao Nian show the slightest interest in any boy.
Yao Nian was lost in thought when Xu Jiayi stared at her for two seconds: "I always thought you were untouched amidst the crowd, but I didn't expect your tastes to be so heavy."
Yao Nian choked on her words. "What do you mean by that?"
"Right now, you look like a lovesick girl just discovering her feelings."
She suddenly coughed violently.
Yao Nian seriously reflected on the time spent with Shen Du over the past couple of days. She simply felt that he was different from anyone she had interacted with before; being with him made her feel comfortable and relaxed.
