Shen Du glanced around, where was Aunt Xue?
Yao Nian swallowed her porridge and said, "Anyway, Jia Yi, I let her go back to eat first."
As soon as she finished speaking, Xu Jia Yi swept up the unfinished food and tossed it all into the trash can, grabbing a bucket of fried chicken as she stood up.
"Since Uncle Shen is here to keep you company, I’ll take my leave now."
Yao Nian exclaimed, and before she could react, Xu Jia Yi quickly slung her bag over her shoulder and walked to the door, winking at Yao Nian. "I’m back! I’ll come see you again."
Shen Du called out to her, "It was drizzling a bit outside when I came in. Do you need me to drive you back?"
Xu Jia Yi waved her hand dismissively, "No, no," she lifted her phone to indicate, "I’ve called a car. It’ll be here soon."
Shen Du nodded, "Alright, then be careful."
Once Xu Jia Yi left, the hospital room fell silent, with only the sound of Yao Nian sipping her porridge.
Shen Du placed a shopping bag on the bed. "Take a look; is everything here?"
Yao Nian looked at the familiar pink color and set down her spoon to ask, "You didn’t get anything for my family?"
Shen Du replied nonchalantly, "I was afraid of being sentenced to three years in prison."
Yao Nian paused for a moment before bursting into laughter.
However, she quickly stopped laughing when she rummaged through the shopping bag and spotted a neatly stacked layer of women's bras and panties at the bottom.
Her fingers froze as she struggled to find an appropriate expression to face this bag of items.
Slowly, she lifted her head from the bag and saw Shen Du lounging on the sofa with a laptop resting on his lap—she didn’t know when he had placed it there.
Yao Nian's face turned from pale to flushed; it was hard to imagine what kind of feelings a man like Shen Du had while buying such intimate items for her.
"Oh right," Shen Du suddenly looked up from his typing, "There’s also some ointment inside. Remember to apply it three times a day; don’t forget."
"Apply what ointment?" Yao Nian was momentarily confused.
Shen Du's gaze shifted to her elbow.
A warm wave surged through her heart; it had been a long time since she felt that kind of care over something so trivial. Watching him focus on his computer screen, she began to mentally tally how many favors she owed Shen Du.
The man leaned back on the sofa, his long fingers lightly tapping on the keyboard with an intense expression as he seemed to be handling some work matters.
He must have just come out of the shower. When he was clearing the dining table for her earlier, Yao Nian caught a faint scent of soap coming from him. This inevitably reminded her of that damp embrace on a rainy night.
Shen Du had just finished revising the lawsuit and sent it to Ji Zheyuan when his phone rang just two minutes later. He glanced up at Yao Nian, who was sprawled on the bed playing with her phone. Seeing that she wasn’t asleep, Shen Du answered the call without hesitation.
“Hey, Shen the Great Lawyer,” came Ji Zheyuan’s voice, filled with despair. “When are you coming back? Linlin is about to break up with me, do you know that?”
Shen Du closed the screen and chuckled, “What does my return have to do with your breakup?”
Ji Zheyuan was his college roommate and now a partner at their law firm. After graduating, they co-founded Xincheng Law Firm. Over the years, they had won several notable cases in Shanghai, and their firm had grown in reputation alongside their success.
“Of course it matters!” Ji Zheyuan complained vehemently over the phone. “You’ve been away for so long on a divorce case! I’m working night shifts every day and don’t have time to spend with Linlin. If we really break up, you’d better help me find a wife!”
Shen Du laughed, “I don’t even have a girlfriend; where would I find one for you?”
Pretending to play with her phone while secretly eavesdropping, Yao Nian’s ears perked up slightly, and a barely noticeable smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
But she didn’t catch a single word after that. All that remained in her mind was one thought: I don’t even have a girlfriend.
