After the official start of the semester, military training, welcome events, coursework, and club activities gradually filled Yao Nian's life, leaving her little time to feel sad. However, every time she attended the Civil Law General Principles class, the figure of that person would inevitably flash through her mind.
In just two months, rumors spread throughout the law school about a stunning freshman who had joined. After attending a few large lectures, the discussions grew more intense, and the number of suitors increased, with Yu Yi being at the forefront. This guy had a knack for pursuing girls; he would often loiter outside the girls' dormitory to create forced encounters. Then he would stuff all sorts of things into Yao Nian's hands before she could refuse, disappearing in a flash.
Fang Yi was munching on the tiramisu that Yu Yi had just delivered, smacking her lips as she asked Yao Nian, "I think Senior Yu is great! He's handsome and in the student council. Why don't you give it a try?"
"Try what?" Yu Mo tossed a pillow at Fang Yi. "I see you’re just trying to butter him up."
Yao Nian sighed and calculated how much Yu Yi had sent her during this time before transferring him the money through Alipay.
Li Rufen, who was reading nearby, chimed in sarcastically, "If you don’t like him, why keep him hanging? And accepting so many gifts?"
Lin Mo pulled out a chair forcefully and said, "What are you talking about?"
Li Rufen shot her a glance. "I didn’t mention you; why are you getting all worked up?"
Yao Nian wasn’t one to stir up trouble, but that didn’t mean she would let others speak ill of her. She held her phone screen up in front of Li Rufen. "First of all, I’m not leading him on; I’ve made my rejection clear. This is just me transferring him money. And Xiaofen, we’re in the same dorm—if you have an issue with me, just say it. No need for this passive-aggressive attitude."
Li Rufen huffed and pushed past Lin Mo as she turned to leave the dormitory.
"Why do you even bother with her?" Lin Mo frowned. "She walks around with that sour face like everyone owes her money."
"I just think we’re in the same dorm; there’s no need to make things so awkward."
"Do you think she cares about your feelings?"
Fang Yi timidly interrupted their conversation and pointed at the large bag on Yao Nian's desk. "You said you’ve already paid for it, right? So can I eat whatever I want?"
Lin Mo rolled her eyes dramatically.
There were many suitors vying for Yao Nian’s attention, including several well-rounded and handsome boys, but she had no interest in dating anyone. She had encountered someone too extraordinary before, which set an unattainable standard for other boys in her mind; after comparing them, they always seemed lacking.
Unfortunately, there was only one Shen Du in the world.
Shen Du had sent Yao Nian several WeChat messages asking how she was adapting to school and why she hadn’t contacted him. These messages would briefly disrupt her thoughts; however, she quickly regained her composure. Knowing that it was impossible between them, she didn’t want to indulge in any unrealistic fantasies.
However, Yao Nian couldn't completely ignore his messages; after all, he genuinely cared about her. She would politely reply, mentioning that she was busy with the start of the school year and thanking him for his concern. Each response would begin with "Uncle Shen," as if to constantly remind herself that he was merely a kind elder looking out for her. Nothing more than that.
In the blink of an eye, October was nearing its end, and the wind carried a deepening autumn chill. After a few heavy rains, the temperature in Shanghai had dropped significantly.
In the library, there weren't many students around; the occasional sounds of keyboard tapping and pen scratching against paper broke the silence. Fang Yi remained seated; she had indulged in ice cream the night before and had been suffering from a stomachache all morning. After taking some medicine, she lay in her dormitory, lost in a deep sleep.
Lin Mo glanced at her phone and quietly asked, "Hey, are you going to the seminar this afternoon?"
