Uncle Shen, Yao Nian put down the menu and said angrily, "Do you know what it means to eat hot pot without spicy food? It means going to Beijing without climbing the Great Wall, going to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower, and going to court without hiring a lawyer."
Shen Du chuckled at her words. "I can agree to the first two, but not the last one; that concerns my career."
A nearby waiter timidly chimed in, "Actually, you could choose a yin-yang hot pot."
Before Shen Du could respond, Yao Nian quickly interjected, "Just the yin-yang!"
With a helpless sigh, Shen Du stood up. "Wait for me a moment."
Yao Nian thought he had been upset by her comment and left in a huff.
When he returned, he was holding a glass bottle of milk.
"Drink this before we eat," Shen Du said as he twisted off the cap and handed it to her.
Their eyes met for just a fleeting second, and Yao Nian immediately took the milk, turning her head away to avoid looking at him.
What should she do?
She still couldn't help but feel drawn to him.
Yao Nian hadn't thought she was particularly hungry until she watched the waiter push a cart filled with tripe, tender beef, yellow throat, oily tofu skin, and spicy hot pot ingredients onto their table. Suddenly, her stomach was screaming for food.
As the broth began to bubble and steam rose into the air, Yao Nian tied her loose hair into a bun and eagerly picked up a piece of tender beef to drop into the pot.
Shen Du studied the girl in front of him closely. It had been months since they last met; although she was still thin, she looked much healthier than during her hospital stay. Her skin glowed with a healthy flush, clearly showing that she had been eating well.
"Uncle Shen, aren't you eating?" Yao Nian scooped up a spoonful of shrimp paste from the clear broth and placed it in his bowl.
Shen Du picked up his chopsticks. "You’re still taking care of people?"
Yao Nian took a bite of tripe dipped in sesame sauce and mumbled indistinctly, "Respecting the elderly and cherishing the young is a traditional virtue of our great Chinese nation."
"Old?" Shen Du laughed incredulously. "Since going to university, not only have you lost your conscience, but you've also learned to discriminate!"
Yao Nian swallowed the tripe and said seriously, "You really need to face your age. If this were ancient times, at your age..."
Shen Du lightly tapped the table twice to interrupt her. "Even in ancient times, I wouldn't be old enough to be your father."
Yao Nian shrugged nonchalantly.
He took a sip of tea and asked casually, "So tell me about that little boyfriend of yours?"
Yao Nian suddenly choked on her drink and began coughing violently, her face turning bright red from the effort.
"Where did this boyfriend come from?" she said dryly.
Shen Du raised an eyebrow, "Hmm?"
"I'm not in a relationship."
Yao Nian thought the topic would end there, but Shen Du was relentless.
"Then who were you talking about when you said someone lacks insight?"
She stared at the boiling pot for a few seconds before lifting her gaze. "I like him, but he doesn't like me."
Shen Du was somewhat taken aback. "Is he one of your classmates?"
"No."
"Uncle Shen," Yao Nian's voice grew softer, "can we not talk about this?"
She didn't want to discuss the topic any further. Shen Du was a smart person, and she feared that if she said too much, he might figure something out. After all, he was already with someone else; there was no need to add to her troubles.
The young girl drooped her eyebrows, clearly not in high spirits.
Shen Du's gaze paused slightly, as if he were organizing his words.
"Actually, a good relationship should make you love yourself more and more. If you find yourself becoming insecure and sensitive, it only proves that this person might not be right for you."
Yao Nian felt a pang in her nose, desperately trying to hold back tears. But he really is a good person.
Shen Du felt an inexplicable tug in his heart and found himself at a loss for how to comfort her.
"Are you full?"
"Yeah."
He raised his hand to call the waiter for the bill. "Then let's go. I want to take you somewhere."
